Never seen Fate/anything, but I've seen tons of gifs of cute girls having lots of violence done to them. Do characters actually die and stay dead? Or does she just magically recover from having her eyes slashed out and her heard re-zero'd out of her chest.

What's not to understand? She chose to go out on her own terms ending the suffering of someone she had a kinship with.

It was a tough situation. She'd been delaying so long that she was getting weaker, instead of going for the kill at the start like she normally would. And more than that... she was so bad off emotionally that this was the only thing keeping her going. The idea of potentially saving Sayaka, the hope that a magical girl could come back from being a witch, was the last thing keeping her sane. She reacted almost as badly to the truth as Mami did in a different timeline, only she was able to keep it together a little longer. Her entire attitude towards Sayaka changed in that moment.

...basically, I don't think she really WANTED to live anymore. I think she may have planned to die in the process from the start, if they failed. It's suicide, really.

Within each route, yeah. Even on the least deadly route one of the actual main characters doesn't make it.
There is one main character (besides the mc of course) that makes it through all three routes just fine, which kind of surprised me.

This was both the moment I fell in love with Asuka and the moment I knew Eva was a 10/10.

The chair meme is from Tsukihime, not Fate. I was talking about Rin, who gets injured pretty badly in Fate but ultimately comes out the other side alright. To compensate she gets the shittiest route with basically no romance.

Sayaka and Kyouko are fundamentally alike, with Sayaka holding elements of Kyouko's father's kindness and the sense of duty Kyouko once held. It's also likely that Kyouko decides to go with her because she recognizes she only lives for its own sake, without purpose: Represented by her constant hunger.

When that determination turns ugly and she turns to Octavia, Kyouko decides she won't leave Sayaka alone fundamentally under her worst fear: That she's a monster who doesn't have anyone to love her.

Kyouko's witch is Ophelia for a reason: Perhaps they could have been closer and Kyouko could have saved her. Regardless, The candle-headed knight that marches without direction and the orchestral mermaid that plays without an audience die together: Neither so much burning or drowning as being tempered to stillness.

After I finished Arcueid's route on Tsukihime and ended up back at the title screen I just knew she was best girl.
The only anime character I ever had an actual crush on, of that makes sense.
In the almost 10 years since then no other came close.
