It's not a gimmick though. While I kind of agree about the music, the animation is amazing with stellar visual storytelling that gives preview for the episode without giving it away.

The music is patchy throughout. Remember when they started they barely had enough for the first 12 episodes. The guy mortgaged his house and was living on noodles. Just because it's acclaimed as a masterpiece now, you forget how little backing they had back when they started it.

There's talk of going back and re-composing an OST for the early episodes, but it's hard to mess with them even when most people admit they're patchy.
