Brainlet, in the arc Killua we saw how much his character grew and was influenced by Gon when he saved Ikalgo. Its a deep character development when Killua goes from dependency on Gon to a fully fledged person in his own right and finds his own friends and goals.
Welfin being changed by Ikalgo was a parallel to Gon changing Killua. It's a consistent theme in HxH where humanity can be found in the darkest of places. It was thanks to Ikalgo talking with Welfin, that both of them could open up to each other and understand that they are more human than ants. That lead to Welfin mentioning Komugi in front of Meruem, concluding the arc. Kino.

This. Since the beginning, Killua's biggest problem was investing in others and making them feel invested in him. Even before explicitly getting called out on it in the tourney exam, Leorio's not willing to trust in his obvious skill because he's just an asshole and purposefully comes off as abrasive. Bisquick said pretty much the same.
Ikalgo bridged Killua's success at being able to turn that around, and the ants being capable of great empathy specifically because of the human part of them. So a side character further's another's character arc and one of the story's themes in one go.
And Welfin and Ikalgo recognizing each other both set up Gyro, and is part of Meruem's resolution.
