I just tried watching the first few episodes of this, after hearing about the mc’s powerset. That sold me on it, but does the actual story get any better? Does he actually use these abilities outside of the first episode?

It gets better in episode 2 and 3. But the anime is still kinda trash with the shitty CG and everything.

Everything after the first volume isn't as good, but the details you're looking for regarding his powers, their use, and what actually happens between the scenes in the anime are present in the novel
Maybe you'll enjoy the adaptation more without having read the novels first though
They're skipping, truncating, and moving things out of chronolgical order and I see no benefit for them doing so
