Pendulum is still better than Fusions or Rituals. They are way too restrictive, and I feel that they often get a pass since they've been in the game since the beginning.

But Ai would be a case of actually deserving it. Shun played ball with Reiji and Yuya and was rewarded with losing everything.

Ai is a tragic villain and everyone is trying to reason with him but he's just not having it.

Well the cast is. There's virtually no reason to care about of any Atem's friends and servants, Zorc feels sort of left field instead of just having Evil Bakura as the central focus. Regular Bakura is still treated like shit. Bobasa is an odd plot device. Kaiba and Kisara didn't really work out. Shadi is still off putting and forgettable. Honda and Jonouchi are only there to get bounced around. And Anzu's payoff is lukewarm at best. It's still fun to look at and nice variation from card games though.

That still doesn't explain what would be gained by making a female protag in a shounen anime primarily marketed towards school-age boys. The money in the TCG/OCG may mostly be in the adult market, but the anime itself is still built for children for the most part. They have a target demographic and stick to it. The nips will always follow the money (case in point; fujos). If there was aught to be gained overall by having a female protagonist (especially in terms of projected profits), they would've done it already. Scoring social justice brownie points with the gaijins isn't going to bring in the dollar dollar.

Rather than arbitrarily specific details like this, what I most want to see is the producers establishing sustainable efficiency in the production that aims towards whatever quality they can get with their circumstances. Like taking some tips from shaft and thinking through foundational stuff like character design/setting/storyboarding/music to make up for what they lack in raw animation manpower.

A situation where key staff members can have at least a little pride in what they're working on so that they're less likely to phone in everything will increase chances of a more engaging product.

Yeah, I feel like the human element tends to get overlooked despite how much this industry relies on the talents of individuals and their varying skill levels.
