From there I was thinking we follow him as a mentally deranged teen who succumbs to madness and evil. But he is saved by a meeting a kindhearted loli elf who eventually falls in love with him, stopping him just short from becoming and undead dungeon arch lich.

Asymmetric warfare isn't really feasible if even your military doctrines are several generations behind your enemy.
The successful insurgents on Earth were all originally trained by various military intelligence agencies or had leadership that had studied in top modern military academies. The biggest possibility for asymmetric warfare development in this series is the advancements the magic users can make with the help of Earth scientific knowledge. Proliferation of such information in the other world should be treated like any other WMD. Never trade it for any price to people with such innate mystical skills.
