Flcl was a really good anime. the whole thing is about getting awkward public boners around a slightly too old floozy with a motorcycle. Kind of have to like the premise.

Maybe I could bump it up to a 7 but it doesn't make much of a difference since a number doesn't capture all if any of my thoughts on the show. I can recognize the show being above average in terms of animation and sound, but other than that I just couldn't find it enjoyable.

Please enlighten me as to how specifically FLCL uses some kind of ascended form of direction to better help convey its themes. Did the third of an episode spent unintelligibly spewing character introductions rapidfire in comic format improve your understanding of their personalities or the world they live in? Your "muh visual storytelling" is just as much a meme as you seem to think the show's detractors are.

There is something ironic about FLCL haters and it's that they admit to enjoying television of any kind. Can you imagine watching characters talk to each other with the same visual style for dozens of episodes straight? That is simply beyond my comprehension. It is so anti-art when animation is meant to burst with creativity, never stagnate, never repeat itself and this is what television as a whole fails to achieve.

That manga scene actually does set up a bunch of characters and background, yes. It introduces Naota's dad as a specific kind of pathetic mecha otaku deadbeat who's always horny, gets you a feeling for what the name of the show means, shows that Naota has very little connection to his family, etc. These come up again in the rest of the show, of course, but the manga scene manages to introduce them all in 2 minutes so that when they come up again it doesn't feel random and out of nowhere.

Because when done well like the shitters above describe, visuals and other forms of direction can add to one's understanding of said arcs and themes, creating a more enriching experience overall. There's plenty of psychedelic indie shit on YouTube and NND that far surpasses typical modern production quality.

FLCL is a great example of how animation is meant to be. Good story, but told through the animation not talking heads. If you need static characters lip flapping at each other for twenty minutes you don't like animation you like audioplays. If you can't understand FLCLs basic ass story you probably can't understand art or animation in general. Enjoy your audioplays.

There are several scenes were limited animation is used, Imaishi's episode had lots of cuts with quite limited features as that's has style. But I did really appreciate how FLCL would switch from bold and interesting limited animation cuts to hyper fluid webgen type animation, which may lack the carefully controlled timing and pristine drawings of something like the Devilman OVAS or Akira, but can make up with it with unrestrained energy and busyness. Not really my style at the end of the day - but FLCL is probably deserving of being called one of the masterpieces of animation of the 2000s. Every cut is interesting on some level and it pulls off a style that is ultimately all its own. I wouldn't say I like it as much as other masterworks of animation like Birth, Akira, Gosenzosama Banbanzai, Jin Roh, etc but it definitely deserves its spot in the pantheon with them.
