I've figured out the origin of it in recent years, especially since there's been a furry revival in the past 10 or so years that has been coincident with a new way of social progressivism.

Basically, westerners (and really specifically, Americans) periodically get into this bizarre mode where they think beautiful things or adhering to a specific aesthetic notion of beauty is considered to be oppressive and horrible.

So some artists, afraid to commit to any particular aesthetic and afraid to represent humans, resort to drawing anthropomorphic animals, because they can be put in stories and contexts that are "close enough" to human but still are not human. Also they're a good placeholder for ideas about diversity/pluralism.

The community surrounding it is horrible because this is an idea that itself is brought about in reaction to an incoherent ideology.

If you really want to follow an artist you should be looking for their twitter account as many only use pixiv for announcements or only post a select handful of the art they make there later.
