Will any company pick up the re-mastered TV series for release in the UK/US?
Will any company pick up the re-mastered TV series for release in the UK/US?
I hope so.
And here's our Sunday thread!
As for your question it's possible they will.
God, I love Lina!
My first husbando.
Hmmm....
Don't we all
Try's JP BD has been out for a month now. How does it compare to the Spanish BD's? Is it just another shitty lazy upscale?
Seriously lads, is there a way to forget Slayers so I can watch it all again as if it was all new to me? Get hit on the head? Electric shock to the brain?
Why do generic japanese fantasy characters always wear gloves instead of gauntlets?
>re-mastered TV series
Wait, has Slayers been remastered recently? Did we get nice BDs or something?
We got upscales.
(Un)fortunately, you can never really forget. However, as someone who re-read and re-watched everything after several years, once I heard that Series 3 was going to be a thing, I can honestly say it's still a great ride the second time around.
Why would you need to forget such a nice series like this? It's kind of impossible
Oh my goodness! It's that time of the year again!
Lina a cute, CUTE!
It saddens me that new generations of weebs have never watched this masterpiece
I'm just sad we never got the rest of the LN animated. I really was hoping for Blast sword shenanigans.
Post best songs
And what is this?
Is there a reason why they couldn't do a proper remaster? Did they lose the film elements in a fire or something?
I wish the 90s anime style would make a comeback. Also, then people might seek out the original 90s shows.
I always suspected Xellos was a big perverted peeper.
Ignore the AMV, it's the full version of the video game Slayers Royal 2's opening song.
youtube.com
1. JC Staff might not have cared about Slayers when they were releasing the BDs. They didn't include anything Slayers-related in their anniversary celebration video:
youtube.com
However, after how popular Slayers has become, they DID include the still-shot of Lina in the mom-bait fetish anime they're doing now (pic related), so... who knows?
2. The originals could have been burned in the massive studio fire that happened years ago when the staff was creating Lost Universe. After the KyoAni event, it's possible that all things Hajime-related, animation-wise, were simply lost, and all that's left now is converting tapes to digital and upscaling the images.
CUTE BUTT!!
Doujinshi.
What releases of slayers should I grab, and is it worth waiting for the BDs?
All of them
No, unless I see screenshots of the recently-released Slayers NEXT proving they aren't upscales.
>All of them
I think you didn't understand what i meant. I mean, what fansub release should i be going for. a-s or?
O-oh...
If you want to save bandwidth and system memory, Funimation uploaded everything from OG to Evolution-R with subs. The problem is that the subs are just the dub script, and that does not include the OVAs or movies. Granted, other channels have uploaded SOME of the OVAs and movies and subbed them, but not all of them. Regardless, the best resolution you'll find on YT is 480p, though Revo / Evo-R might be higher.
Enderp has uploaded all of the animations in excellent quality. They're not remasters, but they're touched up quite well. He uses HVC1, though the videos come from "various sources", so their resolutions are all over the place. See pic related.
The other option comes from ShinMugetsu, but when I tried that upload it took an eternity to get done. This video is all MKV, except for S1 which is MP4. The resolution here is all 1920x1080.
Are the Slayers DVD Collection sets good?
I personally haven't seen shots of them, but people were happy (or at least content) with ShinMugetsu's uploads, and those were off of the DVDs I believe.
dead thread
Never!! I'll post more pics. Also, does anyone own any Slayers merch outside of DVD's, tapes, etc.
I don't think we can have a thread of just us posting...
Guess not, and I've got to get to bed soon for work tomorrow. See you next weekend?
The elf girl on the far left, who is that one of the newer characters introduced in series 3?
M-maybe... I work now, too, I just got lucky and had a Sunday off...
Elaina / Eileen! Introduced in Volume 16, she's a pro-life elf who delivers the warning to the humans in Atessa, where Gourry and Lina are resting on their way to Lina's hometown, about an impending attack from tribal elves who are angry that humans are logging the forests the elves turned over to them, for humans to use responsibly.
Eileen also removes the Dulling Spell Milgazia, the golden dragon who guided Lina to the Claire Bible, put on Gourry's Blast Sword, because it was too sharp for them to use safely. She does this because Lina can no longer cast the Ragna Blade without using a stationary magic amplification circle, and Gourry needed the power-up.
Figured that was her, not enough elves in slayers apparently but it's nice to see a new and actually great character introduced in the series.
There was Memphis. You know, the one who turned into a giant angel that shoots laser beams from her face thanks to using Zanaffa (NOT Zanaffar) Armor? The one who was an unnecessarily rude bitch to Lina as soon as they met?
The bestest
Hello friend!
Afternoon!
There's nothing like a good Lina after a long day, is there?
Isn't she a bit flat?
All 2D characters are flat, retard.
Bullshit, dvdrip looks much better than this.
Honestly, ya
She's fat.
I dare you to find an ounce of fat on this tight little body.

I don't believe you.
Sounds like a freakin' personal problem lmao

Top ten unexpected anime crossovers
In all seriousness I actually didn't expect there to be an official drawing of this.
I'm just glad that Slayers can't be used by Kadokawa. The last thing I want is Lina's party to end up as a gag in Isekai Quartet.
What the fuck?! Why the fuck is Lina carrying a disembodied copy of her chest? I've never seen shit like this in slayers before! I'm reporting this post for guro content.
>I'M GONNA GET VIOLENT!!!
Sorry, only chested girls can qualify for the bubble tea challenge.
Lina ALWAYS finds a way!!
How do you pronounce Gourry? Does the anime dub pronounce it properly?
GOH-ree is the correct pronunciation. There are times where you might here someone say GUH-ree, or GOR-ee, but it's meant to be the first.
I could've sworn I heard it as GAW-ree at one point.
I found this at Anime Expo like two decades ago for $5. I bought it just for the box art. Don't even own a laserdisk player.
But there's plenty. Not only older shows like this, but plenty within the last decade.
>How do you pronounce Gourry?
Just watch the original Japanese. It's Gau-rii.
KISSU KISSU KISSU
FAKKU FAKKU FAKKU
Yeah, the Jap sounds a lot more like Goh-ree.
youtu.be
The English is much more of a Gow-ree
Are you talking about the actual animation cels? Those are collectible, they often got sold after production finished.
Can confirm, I've seen plenty of the cels on sale. Almost bought one myself, but got one from episode 1 of CardCaptor Sakura instead.
Usually the way they make things into BD is to take the original film and record it into a higher resolution. But most TV shows didn't get a high quality 35mm print. This is why it's mostly movies that get good BD adaptations. And most TV show adaptations before the digital age are upscales.
Technically if the cels had been recorded as film instead of tape, they could be successfully restored and enhanced at a later date.
If my meager understanding of animation is correct, of course.
Oh oh oh are we Zelameposting now?
I'm just posting best girl. As I always do whenever I see a Slayers thread. Zel just happens to tag along.
OH FUCK
Naga no!
Like mother, like daughter.
No he's talking about the original master footage that was created when the series was first made. Film actually has a very high resolution so if the masters are still around and in good condition they can be used to create a HD version of an older show. In some cases those masters don't exist any more so you have to use lower resolution copies like first generation VHS tapes or other SD sources. You can digitally convert those to a higher resolution image but it's an extrapolation. Unlike with a true high quality source the image data just isn't there so it won't look as nice.
You wouldn't see an older series getting a HD treatment by re-shooting the cels for exactly the reason you think. Studios don't really have the storage space or the manpower to keep and maintain huge amounts of old cels so they would have been lost, stolen, sold off, or destroyed.
What a shame. Still, beggars can't be choosers. I still keep my fingers crossed that the Next BDs are in good shape, and if not those, at least Try's. I'm sure with Slayers' newfound popularity there may be more effort involved in the revival.
And I was trying to tell you that most TV series don't get high quality masters. Movies did because they were required to be 35mm. TV shows could be a much smaller format. So with only a few exceptions like Escaflowne, most TV shows didn't get recorded on full 35mm film. TV shows usually got 16 or even 8mm film, since the old CRTs didn't show much quality difference. Even if they still have the masters for Slayers, it's probably on 16mm film. And needs to be upscaled.
Once digital took over, they didn't need to worry about film, obviously. But early shows still stuck with a 480p resolution, even when recording digitally. Which is why early digital shows like Princess Tutu and Love Hina also need to upscaled.
Guys, all this science-talk is hurting my brain...
The BDs are upscaled right?
>remaster
Surely you mean to write "upscale of old digitized betacam tapes".
Yes, the BDs, to our knowledge, are upscales.
I always thought it was Guh-ow-er-ee.
Shortstacks are the greatest miracle in the universe.
Its been a bad day anons, more Lina!
>Comparing Wise with Lina
TIME PUT FIRE AT JC STAFF NOW!
Gourry is a two-syllable name. You can't have four syllables in a two-syllable name. His name in Japanese may use four characters--ガウリイ--but it's read as "Gaurii", with the first two, ガウ, having a "GOW" sound, like "gown" or "gouge". So, everyone was right and everyone was wrong. It's GOW-ree.
No. Lina is perfect!
>mfw The other mommy charcter will be voiced by Lina
JUST MAKE THIS BHIT HAPPEN!
I'm glad I stayed awake instead of going to sleep. I don't care if I have work today, Lina is more important than being job-efficient.
Thanks user
I can't let the 9-5 get in the way of my real job, now can I? You're welcome.
Given how JC Staff handled the last two seasons, I wouldn't want them to be adapted. Let someone like Bones or Madhouse do it. With Junichi Sato handling the adaptation. He brought Slayers back to life with the last movie, only to have JC Staff kill it again.
Also, a Lost Universe remake is desperately needed.
They shouldn't adapt the LNs. They should continue exploring outside of the Mazoku Barrier while the LNs continue to take place on the continent and the manga goes full-weeb and stays in the Eastern part of the world where the Airlord is. Now that the dragons following the Firelord are dead, the anime should move to the South where the Earthlord is. Don't cross the streams after the Hellmaster Arc.
That might be the best ass Lina ever got.
25th anniversary expo.
And the other one, just to bring the point home.
A good butt yes
And then there's this...
That I can agree with. Let the anime after Try be it's own thing. And just have them going to do unique adventures. And keep Amelia eternally a cute shortstack and never grow up to be like her sister.
Can't forget the LNs...
'scuse me, mods, just dumpin' some ass in here...
Wait, are we shifting back to Amelia AGAIN??
You can't keep changing gears, you'll strip them in the bad way.
Those are kinda flat though.
Is this the pic you were wanting?
I've only been posting Amelia since I found this thread.
I'm sort of new to the series, why do these two pictures have different art styles? Does the anime change art styles in later seasons?
Why do I find so much enjoyment in seeing this retard get abused?
Lina is 30 years-old, and has gone through quite a few changes since her first design. The first one you linked to is the anime studio's design of her, while the second one is Rui Araizumi's artwork. Rui is the original artist for the light novels, which is the start of the Slayers series. This is Lina's first draft.
I'll post more history with more pictures in a moment.
Lina was first written as having chestnut hair, and you can see that the original designs for both Lina and Gourry were much more "grounded"; Slayers was a comedy, but still managed to maintain a sword and sorcery setting. While Lina may be over-dressed, you can see there's nothing that particularly stands out about her. The same can also be said for Gourry.
Continuing on...
Now, the problem with having such high-details is that they're difficult to animate, so Lina in the anime had fewer objects attached to her. They also gave her hair an orange tinge, because it makes her "pop" more than if she had regular brown hair. This would also be the time when she would get her lewd fang.
Continuing...
Nobody is going to source from VHS tapes; they're going to source from the videotape master (betacam?) that was used to make the broadcasts/VHS tapes/LDs.
I guess the first image is not a good example, but anime Lina seems to have the more objects attached to her.
In the LN spin-offs with Lina touring with Naga, Lina still had her chestnut hair, but you could already see that a change was undergoing her. Naga would also go through some changes once she was adapted into OVAs and movies, which I will discuss next.
Slayers has TV shows, movies, manga, light novels and games, all with different designs. Then on top of it, you have other artists who make magazine ads, TV ads, movie posters and so on. And even within the TV show itself, characters will have massive differences in design based on the artists doing the episode. Every season of the TV show has one particular artist who goes extra heavy on the outlines, making Lina's nose look bigger and even defining the teeth to a creepy degree. Which doesn't look like her design in all the other episodes.
tl;dr Multiple artists.
Don't fucking call mai waifu retarded!
You probably just like it when characters go off model with reaction shots. It's why I love Usagi in Sailor Moon more when she's doing something exaggerated or silly.
I'll provide a better example of my own after this mini-presentation.
The OVAs and movies gave Lina dark-red hair, as opposed to the stock-brown that the LNs had, and the bright-orange the anime had. They also helped to fix the "yaoi face" Naga had somehow gotten, while helping to bring her personality into full-bloom. However, this is about Lina, not Naga, so we'll focus on her changes for now.
There's not really much that DID change between the anime and the OVAs / movies, other than we get to see more moving "parts" for Lina, such as how she rolls up the sleeves for her undershirt. The anime tries to keep Lina's moving "parts" to a minimum, so outside of a full outfit change we don't see her attire in layers.
Its not helping guys ;_;
Over time, Rui's artwork started to follow the anime's design more than the written text. It's understandable, since anime Lina is more "cute" than the reality-grounded LN Lina we had seen prior. Here's an example showing how he's changed from the 90s to today.
Naga changed as well in Rui's artwork, though arguably for the better. While the designs can be considered more "basic", they are nonetheless following staple rules and archetypes so we know exactly who they are as they changed over three decades.
About to start watching this, what am I in for
Here's what I mean when talking about details. Lina, in the anime, has the same animations saved (this isn't a knock on it, by the way) for her hair moving, her cape flowing, and the large, round designs for her mantle. Her attire is unique enough to be recognized, but simple enough to be drawn.
In the original LNs, there were multiple layers that were a part of Lina's outfit, and because they didn't have to move, we could see those layers individually.
What are the best releases to watch slayers?
There's a ton of options and I don't know which ones don't look like shit, or which ones have styled subs that don't look like shit
ima just goto sleep, night anons
F
I'll finally end with Lina's new outfit, the "Atessa" attire. It's not practical in the slightest, but it's flashy, it has great detail, and despite being new Lina looks right at home wearing it. Rather than degrading over time, Lina has only improved as a character.
>Be thankful I used the back of my blade
>Oh, this sword is double-edged
Some gags just stay with you.
>"Oh my God...!"
>"They JIGGLE!!"
>"YEAAAAAAAH!!!"
The best filler episode is sadly stuck in Evo-R. The gags were off the rails, though.

Megumi Hayashibara completes Lina. It's just not the same without her voice.
A show that seems like random comedy, but has one of the largest examples of world building and lore behind it. Also, it feels a lot like a D&D campaign because it literally started out as the authors D&D campaign. But his take on magic is far more unique and interesting than D&D standard in my opinion.
And about two dozen other things I won't spoil for you. The show just has a little of everything.
Zelgadis no!
That post, regardless of what I look, brings me back to this very thread
The show did not start as a DnD campaign. Record of the Lodoss War did.
>In the late 1980s he noticed that Dragon Magazine was holding an amateur fiction contest. Being a fan of science fiction and fantasy, he decided to enter with the predecessor to what would be Slayers. However, he eventually changed the story's scenario, keeping some of the same characters but changing their roles in the story. This new version was Slayers, and his entry won first prize in the contest.
>He once related a story of him riding his bicycle home from work late at night, working out the incantation for Giga Slave aloud as he rode. He also admits that much of the first novel was not planned; for example, he claims that he had not come up with the character and role of Ruby Eye Shabranigdu, the primary antagonist of the volume, until approximately midway through the book.
Adding on to this, Hajime's original conception for Lina was that she was a 10 year-old clone of Luna that was obsessed with machinery and technology, while Lina would be the protagonist and 15 years-old herself.
*Luna would be the protagonist
FRICK
The author for Slayers has also said in other interviews that he played D&D and some of the ideas from his time playing that got incorporated into Slayers. It may be stretching it to say the whole thing came from a D&D campaign, but clearly he had some inspiration from it. He also said he got inspiration from Batman and X-Men of all things. Though I don't see how it factored into Slayers. Maybe he was just saying stuff he liked and D&D is included in that.
What if we say he was inspired by "Western influences" and leave it at that? This way, we'd both be right.
No! I have to be right!
Okay.
AFTER A CRACK LIKE THAT I'M GONNA WAIL ON YOUR WAIFU

source for a ryonabro?
What's some choice Slayers merch I can pick up?
The official and liscensed manga, Hourglass of Falces.
The official and drawn by Rui Araizumi doujinshi, The Blacklist I and II.
no dumbass, 16mm can be scanned up to 4k, not upscaled
Well nobodies going to fansub this now they're blocking fansub ISPs in some countries.
Why aren't we burning down our governments again?
I mean they have all the time in the world to fuck around with this shit, but no time to crack down on the millions of other more serious issues around the world.
You should also read the doujinshi Tempting 3 where Zel violently deflowers Amelia.
Amelia is made for having painful sex. I'm positive she's secretly do-M.
You can't fan sub an official release, but you can try.
It's an upscale. There's probably no other source but the double telecined master. At least, unlike the Spanish BD, they didn't try to "fix" it. They thankfully gave us encoders something to work with. It ain't pretty as it stands, but it can be worked with.
discotekmedia.com
Suggest it to Discotek Media.
shoutfactory.com
Can probably suggest it to Shout! Factory's licensing team too.
help.netflix.com
As a last resort, also suggest it to Netflix. But do the others first.
>Netflix
>he doesn't want 3DCG Slayers movies
Hmm...
No, it's just not worth it. The cost is too great, and I don't mean money.
I'd rather Netflix spend money picking up Slayers then funding another season of Saint Seiya or any other terrible 3DCG series.
Haha time for me to go wageslave! It's been fun, and if this thread is dead when I get back, I'll understand; half of these posts are mine, after all. Good morning, everyone!
I can honestly believe that, it does feel like a average D&D campaign with a twist.
