Nanoha not thinking about Fate when she was thinking it's the end was a slip-up.
Making materials into cats was pretty clever, it explains their high and mighty attitudes and stuff much better so the movie made them much more stomachable than GoD IMHO. Brilliant touch if this was intentional, great lucky windfall if not.
BTW, when Maxwell mentioned that there are factions that would be interested in his technology, I immediately had "foreshadowing" and "sequel hook" lights going on. It was not picked up and quickly downplayed to not mean anything specific, but together with the plague of Eltria being called Eclipse, I could totally use this to hook these movies into Force or a Force reboot. Would be pretty neat but naturally no idea if they plan anything like this.
Detonation pleasantly suprised, I had doubts and fears about their ability to write a good story anymore, after Movie 2nd and Vivid Strike, which had good starting position and material but the writing just sucked after it started.
Reflection had me much more on the edge, when I watched that. With some of the flaws of it together with Bitch-kun's waxing all the time, I just wasn't quite convinced.
But Detonation provided a good story and plot (compared to that, Reflection was still kinda "some fights happened and then they released the recolors") and Iris and Yuri's personal history added exactly the engaging story that was needed, plus good characters. It was good that Detonation was about them and not about materials as I kind of feared.
So in the end, I quite enjoyed it. Naturally various things could hsve been done better, but good things clearly outweight them so it retroactivelly fixes Reflection weaknesses in a way.

You might want to give the new movies, Reflection and Detonation, a shot in that case. They're ACTUALLY proper returns to the formula and the characters from S1 and A's. And it managed to do it so superbly that it makes me want to know who exactly I have to kill to be in the timeline where we got these instead of ShitterS.

I liked it but 2 things kind of annoyed me.
1- I wish the interdimensional police weren't so useless. Aside from Chrono they never seem to do anything good.
2- I think it would have been great to expand on the Book's powers and have Hayate cast some big ass ritual spell (no the one for golems doesn't count) or maybe use it to heal people and fix shit up a bit. Especially since we had Yuri around.

Where I can start in this franchise?
Sometime ago I just watched the OPs, and it was a great time. Really made my mind to want to know the series and characters.
I'm asking this because I read somewhere that the first series is not good and is not a good place for start.

First series is good, it just takes a bit more patience. Lots of retards blog about it being slow/having bad pacing but frankly, I think it is just memes and people being too dumb to watch anything (the rival appears first in 4th episode, but for fucks sake, the whole series has 13 episodes, what sort of mental do you have to be if you can't watch that).
But I could be wrong of course.
IMHO, start with S1 and just go with prodiction order (always the right thing to do). And if you feel like you can't take it in the early episodes of S1, switch to the Movie 1st which is an alternative version. But then go and watch Season2 TV ("As"), because movie 2nd is not a replacement for that.
After StrikerS, the story is continued in mangas (Vivid and Force, which sadly is on perhaps eternal hiatus).

I agree Fate wasn't herself, I had that feeling in Reflection mainly, felt too generic good girl, not like the pro mage Fate from As.
But overal after watching Detonation, I don't really think they gave them too little space. Perhaps they should have given more to them and less to caterials, but in the end I liked the story (it's mainly carried by Yuri/Iris and Kyrie tho) so I'm not going to complain. Even about knights, there's just not much we can expect anymore.
Frankly, I really feared the movies would suck, after all Bitch-kun shills them like crazy, but Detonation ended up well, it was a relief.

The fights in Detonation were nice but the story felt all over the place. Reflection and Detonation did too much too fast, especially with introducing the characters. Okay Kyrie is the bad guy. SIKE just kidding Iris is the real bad guy. SIKE just kidding, the real bad guy is Maxwell. I found it hard to care about any of the new characters.
Also Detonation got dark really fast. All of a sudden there is blood and gore? People got shot in the head, impaled through the chest, and just generally died? In the end Nanoha's arm got fucking blown off? Not that I mind, I do remember the first season being somewhat dark, especially the parts with Precia but it just took me by surprise because they had kind of moved away from that. In the later works, people just got knocked out or badly hurt, even the TSAB mooks were usually just immobilized.

Well that's good. I wouldn't mind if they continued from StrikerS but I hope we actually get a season now instead of movies. Reflection and Detonation definitely had more potential but they had to rush a lot of points so it didn't feel very impactful. Remember how shit A's movie was if you haven't watched the TV series before, that movie was definitely made for people who have already seen the TV series beforehand. Reflection and Detonation felt like that too, a big, somewhat of a decent story told in a very fast pace so you couldn't really care for the events too much.

What are you trying to say here? Even in the first series, it didn't go this far. Precia was the only one who died. By the time it got to A's everyone was befriended aside from Reinforce who faded away peacefully. In Strikers only like 2 of the robot girls died. Jail himself was arrested, just like Maxwell was in this movie. And I doubt the reason the franchise dead ended was a lack of violence. Nobody was saying, yeah put more blood in Nanoha or I'm moving on.

I have similar opinion. Cutting out parts of plot to make a movie already had questionable effect on S1 and it was obvious it sucks for S2/As. StrikerS is even longer so it could end up rather meh. I think it just always felt a bit convoluted/forced (I mean, not fitting with the story/character much), which might be why it never stuck with us and we always go "WTF" when the theme reappears. But it is not a new line.

I thought they might have finally learned their lesson after Vivid Strike managed to mostly avoid this shit, but apparently not. It was probably the best direction the franchise could have taken at that point. The setting made the idea of befriending opponents make sense because it was just a sport, it took advantage of the variety of magic instead of just being displays of raw power, it brought the cast down to a manageable size while still allowing reasonable cameos, and the dumb adult transformations let them pander to lolicons and oppaifags. It's a damn shame that they lost direction after Einhart resolved her arc and resorted to throwing new characters at everything until the cast was even larger than the original series.

It's a god damn shame they never continued with the weapons in the same way because they were some of the coolest things back in A's and the original series because of all the random things that somehow made it all just sort of make sense. Like how magic is manually inserted into the cartridges in the opening which sorta gives you the notion as to how they're dangerous and powerful. Not to mention how magic seems to have a similar ground but is different based on the user such as Nanoha's and Fate's smaller projectiles acting as manually controlled orbs for the former and an automatic tracking arrows for the latter or how they're function because they're different weapons or how Nanoha and Fate have barriers and the Belkans don't. It all just clicks somewhere. Whereas in Strikers and Vivid they barely give anything to how it all works and what is given is overshadowed by the myriad of new shit and dragons and roller skates and it all just comes off as fanfic tier powers and MAGIC.
I haven't watched the movies so I hope at least they give some world building reason to how shit works rather than as some MAGIC that just "werks."

It wouldn't even need to retcon Force, though doing so would open the door to infinitely more options.

Yukari Tamura had a falling out with King Records (who have a big hand in Nanoha's production) and swapped record labels which created a big stink. People aren't 100% certain but it's theorized the only reason they got her back so easily for Reflection/Detonation was because she had signed a contract for being in the 3 planned Nanoha movies and since the 3rd movie turned into Ref/Det she got roped into them anyways. Though things seem to have settled down in general now, they probably worked something out after the heat of the moment passed.
