Keep in mind the anime adds tons of transitory filler scenes tying one story to the other in the beginning. And those were mostly serious, kind of giving a tv drama style to the series.

Then they give up after a while since the stories were too standalone to continue that format.

I mean... she's not really a tomboy and can be pretty girly outside of the martial arts stuff. And Ranma is a boy even when he has tits, and she's pretty protective of him even in male form, so I don't think so.
