Thing is there are only two ways to express "smarts" in Naruto: Academics, and using stategy/tactics in combat. In some ways it was just the correct matchup for talk no jutsu to work. And Naruto at least gives him some actual answer instead of "believe it, dattebayo" which Nagato just accepts.
