This fundrasing site tells you as much, and informs you very -very- clearly just how much they take. They even let you choose how much of a cut they get, and the cut is added onto the amount you wish to be paid to the donation, rather than obscurely chipped out of it.

You're partly right in thought, as merch is what they wanted you to buy, and considering the nature of the attack, merch would probably be a greater sentimental purchase, but either way, middlemen are involved. That merch you pay for will have package and posting costs, and tax. Most of what you pay for wont go to them. In this odd twist, the gofundme donation is actually a better way to ensure they get the funds they need.
Ultimately, if you donate, you get nothing, and opting to buy merch instead is no more or less valid an option.

Don't be disuaded from donating because people called you a cuck or an idiot or feminist or whatever, do what you want with your money.

A quick reminder that the first amendment isn't literally a grant for "free speech", but a government stance to not interfere with public speech. Websites will usually reserve the right to not have to put up with one's shit if they don't want to.
In brief, you could say

Saying or doing insensitive shit for no reason other than to get a few laughs does nothing good, and thus has little reason to be tolerated by anybody, and simply ignoring it gets harder and harder when it's upwards of 70% of what you see.

Leave the site, which the mods don't want you to do, and likely people wont want to have to either.
Or report the insensitive shit, so nobody has to feel the need to leave, and they can ignore it much easier.
