I was always under the impression that you cant really like Rei unless you are japanese.
Why is that so?
Yeah I get that same impression. She's very boring as a character to me, even if she ends up growing a lot as an individual. I used to be a Reifag as a fat NEET teenager but as I grew up I started liking Asuka and Misato more. I'm more attracted to the 'real' women in the show that have real problems and imperfections now because I feel like I'm confident enough in myself to be able to handle them and their more harsh personalities.
As a fat NEET loser I had no confidence in myself and so liked Rei because she was pretty ideal and didn't have a personality that you had to 'handle' like the other two. I think that's why the Japs love Rei so much, because a lot of them never grew out of their child-like mindset and are now grown Otaku NEETs who don't feel safe imagining handlling the rejection from the other girls versus the much more submissive (to the MC self-insert) Rei.
>thinking misato and asuka are more 'real'
>thinking all woman are neurotic bitches
>thinking quiet girls don't exist
>especially in fucking japan
I guess different cultures have different standards for what is attractive in a woman personality.
To me, the idea of being attracted to someone as boring and empty as Rei feels alien.
I say that you would have to be japanese to like her simply because the original audience is japanese and she is much more popular there. But I cant say why is that, even though there is probably a very plausible explanation.
Rei is way more than a 'quiet' girl. She becomes singularly submissive to Shinji towards the end and even when provoked only ever provides concise one or two sentence answers in the most monotone way possible. I just don't get the attraction.
Misato and Asuka are obviously extremes on the spectrum for their archetypes, but they encompass the rejection and cruelty of reality, yet the hope for happiness and understanding in spite of the pain.
They're all mentally ill people and not the norm in society.
No shit, but they represent different thematic elements.
> the hope for happiness and understanding in spite of the pain
user, that is LITERALLY what Shinji's heart calls Rei at the end of Instrumentality's sequence. Misato and Asuka both terrify Shinji precisely because of their occlusive and cruel expressions of being as hyper-realistic characters, i.e. their pathological tendencies. THAT is not what gives him hope during instrumentality; what did was the fact that he managed to connect to Rei without words, and that Kaworu loved him -- that's the romanticism which told him to not give up and have hope to face the neuroticism of attempting communication with "realist women" like Asuka.
Call Rei a romantic ideal all you want, but it's that romantic ideal which gave Shinji the strength to deal with reality, not reality itself.
This. It was always about Shinji's relationship with the ayy lmaos.
This is also why Rei and Kaworu have the most focus in Rebuild with Shinji.
I agree with everything you said. Your last line about her, and even Kaworu, being romantic 'ideals' is what I am trying to get at. I like Asuka and Misato more because they are not 'ideals' ad are instead traumatized individuals who don't always have the right answer or are always open to embracing the main character in just the right way like Kaworu, and at times Rei.
You left out the
>they encompass the rejection and cruelty of reality, yet the hope for happiness and understanding in spite of the pain.
With end of NGE Rei, and 100% with Kaworu, there is no fear of rejection or cruelty from the two themselves. They are idealistic to Shinji and don't require him to be vulnerable to form a relationship with them to nearly the same degree of vulnerability that he must be in to form a relationship with Asuka or Misato.
Kaworu and Rei are representative of an ideal of unconditional hope and love, while Asuka and Misato are more representative of having to fight tooth and nail through suffering to get that same affection. I'm known to be a brainlet from time to time so maybe I'm completely off base though, who knows.
ORANGE GIRL BAD
The only thing I was disagree with is that, thematically, either Asuka or Misato were the hope: "the hope for happiness and understanding in spite of the pain". That's Rei and Kaworu's semblance as signs. I wasn't criticizing the reasons of your taste, but just pointing out that neither Misato or Asuka ultimately encompass hope (Rei) or love (Kaworu) for Shinji.
>there is no fear of rejection or cruelty from the two themselves
Rei slaps Shinji when he talks shit about gendo, and Kaworu betrays him in ep 24
Makes sense. I guess rei and kaworu are a more thematic representation of it. Asuka and Misato represent the pain and rejection of human interaction, but it's what you ultimately have to choose since it's the only way to find real happiness that isn't some perverted false happiness bound in escapism
I would link this to the religious elements of EVA, but Yea Forums would screech at me because retards who don't understand that just maybe when Anno says something stupid in a ditsy voice during an interview and is friends with Ikuhara (the master-bullshitter) he is bullshitting in order to not give out answers for his work in interviews and have the audience think for themselves
Its Asuka.
That's why I specifically said end of NGE Rei when she transfers her object of affection from Gendo to Shinji.
Kaworu allows Shinji to kill him because of his selfless, unconditional love towards Shinji (or maybe the human race, using Shinji as a sort of 'avatar' for it?). The problem with Kaworu is he is like crack for an emotional junkie. He offers Shinji unconditional love with no strings attached and asking for nothing in return. This is exactly what Shinji wants as it gives him the affection he desires but never forces him to get over his fear of rejection, so it is not the relationship he needs.
He needs to face rejection head-on in an attempt to love himself and possibly others, hence Misato and Asuka
Maya
It's not fair brehs
>but never forces him to get over his fear of rejection
Kaworu tells him he'll remain alone forever if he keeps running away from people.
Just because he says Shinji is worthy of being loved doesn't mean that he thinks Shinji should never change or self-improve.
Sure.
It's just thematically, as a result of the unconditional love Kaworu gives, Shinji never HAS to grow to form a bond with Kaworu .
He is forced to grow, or at least get on the right path to get over his intrinsic fear of rejection, with Asuka and Misato.
Please post it I'd like to see
I don't know if I can agree with that interpretation, there's not much given in the show/movie to evidence that seeing as how Kaworu says a lot about self-improvement to Shinji in his episode and then again in EoE to both Shinji and Gendo.
Although I absolutely agree that the show portrays Misato and Asuka as representing the harshness of reality and rejection, the latter especially, there isn't anything similar for portraying Kaworu as escapism or even unconditional love. Kaworu is always presented in a positive light, both in Shinji's perspective and from Anno/staff member perspectives.
It's quite simple really, the relationship which Shinji has for Kaworu/rei vs asuka/misato reflects the relationship he has with religion and God. Shinji desires a clear unconditional and protective love from the world and God with his faith, with no suffering, but Asuka represents the reality of the world's suffering which contrasts with and the need to deal with that and his hope the existence of an eternal love/being beyond that.
Not to say the Shinji is necessarily religious, it's just easier if I put it like that - art does not always translate directly into words.
So what your saying is stop idolizing your waifu and meet a real girl.

Something like that -- but abandoning the ideal of your waifu and resigning yourself to the harshness of reality will get you nowhere either, because without pining for ideals life is rotten meaninglessness that you can't wait to escape from. What you need is to use that ideal and your imagination to bring out your other's potential through your love, to help them realize it as closely as possible. Only then will you be able to stomach life's inherent disappointment a little bit.
In other words what it means is: Shinji cannot stay in the bliss that Kaworu and Rei provide him, because they're transient spirits not of this world and too divine to co-exist with him. Their very purpose, existence and scenario are separate from his, which is why, in Eva, whenever Shinji begins to love either of them, they're taken away from him. But if they did not give fuel for his imagination, then he'd be in hopeless despair unable to move on with "realistic" people like Asuka and Misato. So, since reality prohibits Shinji to coexist with Kaworu and Rei (the ideal), he has to use their essence to try and live with Misato and Asuka (the real). Thematically speaking. Idolize your waifu, never forget that, but try to live in a reality where you find her closest semblance, and keep struggling for that.
That's more or less what Eva's about.
I daydream a lot about running for president and getting asked OP's question.
I want to win gold in Olympic Weightlifting and have my photo with the medal taken with an Asuka bodypillow. Watch out for me anons

Asuka is perfect, I absolutely love orange haired girls. She has serious mental problems tho...then again, all eva characters have them.
Nobody really likes rei. Not even the characters of the show. She's just a hollow replacement for the true best girl.
