Why were all of Miyazaki’s 90s films so dark and cynical?

Because he could see the future of the anime industry

because nukes and firebombing

apologize America

Edgy Miyazaki. Ya'll think he'll finish his new movie before he croaks?

This fucking edgy guy make sme mad. Hurr darkness is me, I had a terrible past, destroy destroy. He shuld be punched in that retarded face of his and kicked in the nuts so hard his insides would fly out of his mouth.

His producers said that it's harder to write action when you're older, so he had to hurry and went in with a sour attitude.

Because real life is mostly dark and cynical.

>this dude is played by Billy Bob Thornton in the dub

I unironically loved the English dub.

What if literally the whole world was cursed? what then?

Everything in the 90s was dark and cynical

It's actually kind of amazing how much they got away with, now you have to be cheerful all the time

>Everything in the 90s was dark and cynical
The more our cultural distance from the 90s grows, the less I understand that. The 90s were an incredibly optimistic time to live in, so where did that sentiment come from? It's easy to see why people feel a need for cheerful escapism in dark times, but the other way around?

>The 90s were an incredibly optimistic time to live in
Not in Japan. Lost Decade.

>The curse was THE ECONOMY
That actually makes some twisted kind of sense.

God, that was a terrible dub.

Still the best Miyazaki movie

IIRC, the subs on the first DVD release were transcribed from the dub, which added a voice-over to the opening scene that wasn't in the Japanese audio. Confused the hell out of me the first time.

Own it, can confirm. Oddly enough, though, the French subtitles are 1:1 with the original Japanese's wording.

Porco Rosso disagrees

How is whisper of the heart "dark and cynical"?

Not directed by Miyazaki

I just assume all Ghibli movies to be synonymous with "Miyazaki films" .

Well, they're not. You can tell because some of them are, y'know
good

That's because the french give a shit.

Are you implying Miyazaki doesn't make good films?

>The 90s were an incredibly optimistic time to live in, so where did that sentiment come from?
When the dominating feeling a time is one way, it's much easier to get away with art that has the opposite feel. It's easy to make people accept a story questioning the state of the world morally when most of them will be able to nod and then go back to a satisfying life. And so the opposite is true: when times fucking suck, it's easier to sell optimistic stories because that's what people want to fucking see, not the kind of depressing shit they encounter everyday.
