I can appreciate that people dislike asspulls and that specifically a lot of shikimarus fights fit more to their tastes because he actually has a plan and executes it and it doesn't feel silly. However the reason I liked shikimaru vs flute girl more is because of the internal growth of shikimaru as squad leader during the fight. Temari vs Shikimaru didn't have the same sort of atmosphere or feeling to it to me.

I would agree that they are important, but not more important. If you aren't going to bother making a masterpiece, then you need a balance of both. Being so unbalanced it looks like a weeb van-gogh is not the right choice. Moments like that are only the right choice when they are used as contrast, not the default.
Imagine if you watched an entire movie with the 90's VHS cartoon filter, it would look like shit. But use it stylistically for a scene or two, and it has an impact other than making the movie look like shit.

I think they are more important. If you were making a noir film today, like Sin City in 2005 then you'd still be completely justified making it monochrome or black and white as a stylistic choice. In animation in particular the entire point of animation is inaccuracy of realism to accentuate accuracy of the substance.

It might not be the end all be all of animation but I greatly appreciate seeing a style of directing where the animators are given personal leeway in a scene at the compromise of the whole of the piece. Space Dandy is another example of a show that I think handled this incredibly well. Its one of the things I think is a fundamental separation between animated and live action films.

Live action films increase realism and immersion to make you feel like what is happening in the movie is real. Animation says "what's happening isn't real but the feeling and tone is." and we're going to play with that.

The world building was the best part. Each "good" part was ruined by typical shounen stuff so it can't be helped, but the world building was top notch. The ninja world is still one of the coolest in anime to date.

All we really knew about Lee was that he was strong, Had a DREAM!!!, could only use taijutsu, and was in love with Sakura. All things in my mind were pointing to this kids gonna die, so I never formed an attachment. Then most of the characters developing episodes were actually in filler arcs, which everyone seems to ignore for all characters except for Lee's team, because they're fan favorites for some reason and rarely have moments to shine in the series.

On element fatalities fire seems to only ever work against jobbers. High level Ninja seem to be better at dealing with it. I'd say from what we've seen in best to worst on elements it goes Lightning-Water-Earth-Wind-Fire.
