Are you enjoying this show so far Yea Forums? I can't really find a flaw in it, the characters are all cute and interesting, the show's pacing and dialogue are top notch, the battles are exciting, the soundtrack is perfect.
Granbelm
it's good for reaction images and i do like all the other aspects of the show too
Yes it's interesting so far. It appears to be yuri.
it's a neat show
batoru episodes are bestu
Smug magician girl
What is her endgame?
She's playing possum. She knows Anna is a burnout who is going to wreck herself so she's going to let the kids fight it out and then come pick on them at full power when there's less of them.
But it’s a 6.24 on MAL. Are you sure?
It is? Fuck. I hope that doesn't mean we're not getting a season 2.
All ten fingers inside Anna at once.
So far is great.
Eh, it's OK, but I would have really expected it to give me more of a reason to care about the characters/world by this point.
Fuck off.
Raping Anna violently.
Mind rape
she's a schemer
I hope that other one they threw under the bus goes aki-pineapple on her
So far no episode fulfilled my expectations, but I like it. It's a clear contender for AOTS, at least in terms of TV.
What makes you think that?
I love loli emilia.Cute designs overall, story is just ok.
i have the ability to distinguish posts by fellow people of culture who appreciate yuri
Rub rub.
What fucking purpose did she serve?
gib rice
>someone capped the same scene I did
nice
The same as all other girls. Pleasing old men.
loli toga party
>I would have really expected it to give me more of a reason to care about the characters
That's an odd thing to criticize given how heavily the story has invested in fleshing out the characters and their motives.
I don't know. I was hoping to have an answer to that after 3 episodes, but I'm still not sure. It's not like I can point to something which bothers me specifically but at the same time it's been 3 episodes and it has not made me really care about what happens next or about the characters.
>how heavily the story has invested in fleshing out the characters
Are we watching the same show? Not my post, but are you seriously suggesting any more than has actually happened?
its really fucking bad and generic
>I can't really find a flaw in it
Mangetsu's insecurities have to be revealed via exposition because the writers couldn't find a way to communicate her dissonant personality naturally to the audience. This is both a copout and lazy.
Well, no, it's because her insecurities are something she keeps private, so of course it had to come out in dialogue rather than being shown. How would you have preferred it be handled?
I liked this bit. Looks like it would feel fluid and intuitive to control the mech.
She'll be back for revenge.
Anna has already said it's not simple jealousy that's motivating her. She seems to know what Shingetsu's real goal is, maybe because it was confided in her at some point, hard to say.
This line is Anna indirectly referring to the fact that she feels like Shingetsu betrayed her and by extension her family, which is easy to understand given what we know about the houses wanting to preserve magic. Her goal is the opposite, so naturally she'd be seen as a "demon."
If Shingetsu is a demon then the other one must be a ____
I fail to see your point here, just because one character is more fleshed out doesn't change the fact that the idea that
>how heavily the story has invested in fleshing out the characters
is a retarded statement considering that for most of the cast their motivations are literally one or two sentences.
We're talking about two of the mains, and you're taking for granted that what we already know about them is the full story. It's clear there's a lot more history with these two than what we've seen so far. But practically every scene in the last two episodes has been based on setting up and establishing that the combatants each have a reason to be involved in this. The fact that you can succinctly describe each of them doesn't mean the story isn't investing in those. Anna, Mangetsu, and Shingetsu have gotten the lion's share of it, but it's still interesting both given what we do know and what is left unknown. There are a lot of questions that are yet to be answered and that's what makes it intriguing.
No. He's right, to a degree. Such characterization definitely has to be foreshadowed through subtle actions/mannerism. To be fair though, they did foreshadow it a little with the school lunches. But it was far too little, not really well executed and the actual exposition dump came far too early. The direction so far is pretty lackluster in general.
I think that's a matter of preference. We would have needed another episode or so if we were going to lead into the story like that, but it started more or less in the middle of the action.
Not enough loli rape is its only flaw
I wouldn't write such a contradictory character as the MC in the first place because it only invites these kinds of contrivances, but any meaningful foreshadowing would have been acceptable. Muh lunches, the way it was handled, is not.
How about having her drop the act when she's alone? When she goes back to school on her own and finds the lunch she still acts like the genki retard she is around others. Give her an awkward deadpan expression instead. Anything that isn't "learning about this key element of the character for the first time by having them clearly state what their deal is for the convenience of [other character] + the audience."
>The direction so far is pretty lackluster in general.
What about the flower garden scene? Or little touches like how the piano OST was playing while white hair girl was wiggling her fingers like this? I find the directing pretty solid and occasionally there are interesting choices. The comedy is good too, it's not overplayed, just light. Like Mangetsu being disappointed Shinketsu didn't find her tonkatsu delicious enough. Or the amnesia trick failing last episode.
I feel like you're trying far too hard to justify the overly generalised point you made in the first place. You claim that characters and their motives have been fleshed out, when in reality the opposite is true. The way that the other user reduced the motivations is quite literally all there was in the anime, you weren't even able to add anything to them apart from with Anna, which I'm not knocking you for, there is nothing to add.
Hell, I was about to try to write my own list for another perspective but I just realised I literally cannot add anything to the post I quoted (apart from Anna, which I think they missed the mark on in the first place), there's fuck all user, and that's why I made my original point in the first place: there is very little to care about the characters/world at the moment. Who is the piano girl? Why should I care about her or her sister? And so on. The only thing I cared about was the relationship between Anna and Shingestsu, which what do you know, was actually fleshed out. Funny how that one works.
Why is Yuuki Aoi so perfect?
I think the fact that you now say you care about two of the (so far) three main characters is incompatible with your claim that you don't care about the characters. Or did you mean the side characters? Because I think we're just getting hints of where those are heading until they become more relevant. Probably Anna is gonna bite the dust soon and we'll lean into the other characters harder. I wouldn't be surprised if she was the first one to die, actually.
>I think that's a matter of preference.
What is? "Tell, don't show" is always a sign of bad writing. That the foreshadowing was not enough? Maybe, but can you point to any other scene that would indicate Mang is nuts?
Take Fate/UBW for example. People criticize it for not giving Shirou enough characterization, yet even without the overly long monologues from VN, the anime did much more than Granbelm to show (not tell) that he is fucked up in the head.
There are good scenes, no doubt, but the show is simply not consistent in the direction department, hence I wouldn't really call it solid.
>What is? "Tell, don't show" is always a sign of bad writing.
You're overgeneralizing that. As a rule it's often better to show, not tell. But sometimes telling is more expedient, as long as it's not overdone. Not everything has to be 2001: A Space Odyssey. Sometimes characters talk about themselves (just like people do). For instance, if you wanted Anna and Ernesta's history shown rather than told, we'd need a whole other series prior to this literally showing everything that has happened.
>There are good scenes, no doubt, but the show is simply not consistent in the direction department, hence I wouldn't really call it solid.
Well, I won't go overboard describing every scene since I already gave a bunch of examples, but I'll just agree to disagree.
>now say you care
Did you even read my original point? I didn't say I didn't care, I said I wanted more of a reason for the reasons I already explained.
Your way of distinguishing between main/side characters is asinine and contradicts itself. If Anna is a main character, how is she going to bite the dust soon and be absent from the majority of the anime? All the mages are main characters (with a focus on pink and black, think PMMM), look at the promo art and the the website if you don't believe me, and by that logic I care about less than 30% of the main cast, which is garbage.
I doubt you can draw that conclusion from the promo art given one of them is already dead. I'm speculating Anna will die soon given the focus on her at this early stage, not unlike a certain character in PMMM.
Yeah, it is really solid so far.
user, the main characters are literally separated from side characters on the website and have their own PV videos.
Also, do you honestly believe they aren't going to do anything with that other girl? If they honestly did it the writing would be even worse than it already is.
Given the premise of the show is a battle royale where only one will remain at the end, yes, I do think the characters are going to continue to fail (though that doesn't necessarily mean them dying) throughout the series as the numbers whittle down. That's how it works.
>Who is the piano girl? Why should I care about her or her sister? And so on
It's almost as if she has only appeared for one episode and there are still 9 episodes to go.
Yes, it's definitely not as black and white as my statement might have implied, but so far we have not been shown much at all. It just doesn't make for compelling storytelling.
>For instance, if you wanted Anna and Ernesta's history shown rather than told, we'd need a whole other series prior to this literally showing everything that has happened.
You can do it either via flashback or better yet, reveal bits and pieces of the puzzle throughout the series, leading up to the conclusion of the character arc. Not every detail of their common history is necessary to know. But more than likely we'll just get another exposition dump.
I'll guess we'll see in a few weeks.
>And so on
Epic job my man, feel free to read the whole chain next time to see where I'm coming from.
My only problems with it so far are that they wasted the first episode on flashy fights just to show off their 2D mechas, as soon as the focus shifted to the characters in episode 2 it was much better.
There is no endgame for her. She's the one to drop out this time as she's the only one without a backstory.
See, I think cryptic dialogue like "she's a demon" and confrontation scenes where one character exposes a secret about another character are more interesting than flashbacks. (Not to mention we did have a flashback scene this episode)
>I'll guess we'll see in a few weeks.
Yeah, I'll be here if you want to rub my nose in it in case Anna makes it to the finale.
>All the mages are main characters (with a focus on pink and black, think PMMM), look at the promo art and the the website if you don't believe me
Only one picture event has the other mages on them.
Realistically? Try to attack either Shin-Ko or Man-Ko outside the battles to get the aproval of Anna. Probably getting her mind wiped by Shingetsu in the process. I for once want them to go the befriend route on the broken girls, but I guess they'll be fixed by the end anyways.
>Anna makes it to the finale
I literally never said that though, but whatever.
>with a focus on pink and black
Also, notice how none of the side characters are on there.
Yes, we already did have a flashback, and yet we still don't have much clue as to what's the deal with their relationship. That's not a good sign. If it ends up being some family j-drama, then fuck me. But probably not. I hope not.
Take Princess Principal. They did tons of foreshadowing and hints which made you question the nature of Ange's and Princess' relationship. How do they know each other? Why do they look alike? Then, once the audience was hooked up, they revealed the rest in a flashback, which at the same time cleared any doubts about the motivations of either of them.
>Yes, we already did have a flashback, and yet we still don't have much clue as to what's the deal with their relationship.
I think at this point it's safe to assume Anna knows about Shingetsu's secret goal (destroying magic) and that's why she views her as a traitor.
>"Tell, don't show" is always a sign of bad writing
Youtube "critics" were a mistake.
Even before Madoka came out, most of the official art had Sayaka and Mami on them though
>with a focus on pink and black
Would have been better if it wasn't a fucking tournament show.
That seems to be the case indeed. But I'm hoping there's more to it than that.
I'm not a youtube critic. Nor do I watch e-celebs, so I wouldn't know what youtube "critics" say. If you think that "Tell, don't show" is good storytelling, I can only recommend you to go watch something as dreadfully bad as Gatari, if you haven't already. You're sure to enjoy it.
I don't get what your definition of "main character" is then. Are they not the leads, the ones that move the story forward? Anna, Nene, Rosa and the others aren't even there for the most part while the story revolves around Shingetsu and Mangetsu. By saying that they have the "focus" is the same as calling them the main characters and the others as side characters.
Anyone who says they weren't completely fooled about Madoka by the promo art is most likely a fucking liar.
I can't be arsed with this anymore because it's just going around in circles and I don't even know if you're the same guy I was originally replying to, but the point is that you can have a group of main characters where more focus is put on certain ones, such as with PMMM, like I already said. I don't know of anyone who would honestly call Kyoko or Sayaka a side character just because the focus is mostly on Homura and Madoka.
>dreadfully bad as Gatari
Not the guy you're responding to but this is some shockingly shit taste, although I'm not going to derail the thread with off-topic.
Both the plot (so far) and the characters are derivative, but the visual design is great. The SD mechas are fucking retarded however.
You know what this anime really needs? An OST done by Yuki Kajiura.
But in Madoka's case, Madoka is the main character while Homura is the deuteragonist.
By your logic where everyone is a main character, you could also call Mangetsu's parents main characters of the anime, just that they don't get as much focus as the other main characters.
You're still completely missing my point and ignored half of it. Do you not consider Sayaka and Kyoko main characters?
>Madoka is the main character while Homura is the deuteragonist
Not him, but not really. Madoka was just a bait and switch protagonist. Episodes 10-12 the main perspective shifted to Homura. Even OP and ED are sung from Homura's perspective.
But that aside, all 5 girls are definitely main characters.
>bad writing
Literally every single time. It's amazing.
Imagine: the anime
Yes, worthless posts that don't add anything to the discourse are amazing literally every single time.
Exactly, thank you whoever made that "bad writing" meme popular.
Needs more rape
Damn you, 19th century e-celebs!
The funny thing is how that same argument can be used for "yikes".
>it wasn't invented today so the fact that it got a massive increase in usage on Yea Forums recently definitely doesn't mean anything!
Try harder faggot.
My mistake, I didn't realize it's case sensitive. Curse you, writers of the past 2 centuries!
You moved the goalpost all the way across the field. What's next, "based and redpilled"?
When will they merge???
yikes
AHAHAHAHA
Funny how her career exploded after Madoka when she's best as evil girls.
I feel like I'm putting way too much thought in the OP
>main girls have magic crystals with well defined edges
>all the others have ones with round shapes, other than the cyan haired girl
>but at the same time, some of them have closed eyes when their crystals pass them
>the last three girls, two of them having round crystals, close their eyes too
WHAT DOES IT MEAN
>giving an example is moving the goalpost
Damn son. It's interesting to see how much people are willing to defend their favorite empty criticism buzzwords though.
And these are just pathetic memelords that actually proved the point
>she's best as evil girls
You take that back!
I just fucking love her screaming voice
I think that the crystals shows their "true" emotions, which is why some of them crying or fuming with anger.
It means nothing
Yikes
im not sure if the crystal edges have meaning, but i definitely think the facial expression changes will have some meaning to them by end, even if its just symbolizing something basic like who ends up friends with whom
It doesn't seem like their expressions change through the crystals, just whether their eye is open or closed.
Beauty mark locked on
>i'm gonna erase magic when I win
Mangetsu is glad she won't have to regret crushing Shingetsu when it comes down to last cull. WE'RE GONNA LET THE MAGIC BE FREE.
>im not sure if the crystal edges have meaning
All the crystals with edges are just that, pure crystals. All the round ones are "processed" and have some ornamental shit added to them.
I mean, it might be a coincidence but it feels like they've done this on purpose.
Check out Anna's part, her mouth definitely changes while her eyes get more focused and she gets some wrinkles
What a missed opportunity.
ill have to pay more attention to that then next time i see the opening and in the episodes.
You can't really see her mouth much before the crystal covers it, but it doesn't seem to be different
Basically, Anna's normal feelings are angry and hidden feelings are REALLY FUCKING ANGRY
Nevermind, is right. Even in you can see that her expression started neutral and turned to angry after the crystal exposed her.
Her mech is so cool
>SETSUGETSU BAIKA
Uncool loli
Joker
This show is weird in how unique it is to me
>mechas are basically puppets at their core, with some armor put on
>get controlled by strings
>has some skelly-looking caster mechas
>fucking caster mechas
I love it
Shes not a kid!
That wouldn't hold up in the court of law.
Im not the only guy who wants Anna to turn off everyone's ability to hear so she can beat the living shit out of me and no one would hear my screams only her and I will it would be our little forbidden secret haha
This.
Liking her is not gay if you are a girl because of flat she is.
Envision.
