Mind you, Pendulums didn't lock out a lot of decks and forced them to use them, also it did take some time until Generic Links that could help decks appear. Also, Pendulum (besides in-own archetypes like Qli) helped a lot of decks if you managed to build them right. Plus you could still summon more than one ED monsters.
Not to mention that the Pendulum format was one of the most fun and vary, even with Zoodiac and stuff, they could die to Raigeki and Dark Hole, and it was possible to get rid of them even if Trident were to interrupt your combo. That's a million times different than the degeneracy of FTK Links brought at the start.
I know you despite Arc-V and Pendulum as much as I do with VRAINS (not Links though, I ended liking them), but please check your facts.

Yuusaku settled in real quick though (within 2-3 episodes into his established tone). I'm still having issues with Aoi with her idol voice creeping in, even as Blue Maiden. Not that there's anything wrong with that in the right context, but it sure makes for a weak sounding duelist. She just none of the oomph the rest of the cast has, even the side-jobbers like GG and Pandor do a better job in the duelist shouting and callouts department.

ARC-V season 1 was peak Yugioh with the likes of (whatever DM arc that's similar with the following,) GX season 3, and 5D's season 1. Shame that due to ARC-V's entire run being all one connected story, the latter parts drag down what the early stuff set up. If you plan on watching it, at least watch up to 53. If not and would rather just watch one duel from it, watch episodes 33 & 34.

DM has really charming characters, and when the characters are interesting and I personally become invested in them and their journey I will continue to a show. So if the plot falls apart I still want to see Yugi grow as a person. I also watched it when I was like 14, so like what a good character to me was fucking stupid back then, but DSOD I saw as an adult and it was good shit.
Everyone in the movie acted like how they were supposed to and kinda always acted. You get a reboot or a remake and it seems like people are there for just thr money and half ass shit, or sometimes the creator forgets how to write characters he wrote 20 years ago, but that didn't happen with DSOD.

The bulk of DSOD's key animation staff were one-timers or people who had already left yugioh coming back one more time. Plus the director and writer never touched arc-v, obviously. I don't see money being an issue for what's essentially an advertisement, because if the execs want it on air they can't say no to giving the necessary funds or else the whole thing would simply stop.
Seems like the whole action field and duel concept more than anything was too ambitious, plus the whole having to use legacy characters and inept writing thing.

Making the magic stuff explicit might make for easier excuses to have a lot of different set pieces/backgrounds during duels, while keeping the day-to-day settings limited and budget-friendly so they don't have to design new everyday locations all the time.

Something like that also has different production circumstances.
For arc-v it's like they actively tried to find ways to shoot themselves in the foot production-wise compared to what they could realistically handle, and make it so much harder by default. Which rippled out to vrains not getting as much pre production apparently, and really struggling in the first 1/3rd. They likely have enough problems finding a writer who's willing to stick around for 3 years consistently and be well behaved without those extra restrictions, hence the producers running to an old fart like yoshida and dragging him back to the anime.
