Basically. Actual spoilers about the first arc as well as its basic plot. MC is an assassin sent to train a seemingly powerless girl from a prestigious family in magic. She has shown no magic prowess which is largely genetic indicating she may be a bastard. If she fails under his training and it seems there is no hope at all for her, MC's implicit mission was to make her disappear. Actual spoilers next. MC becomes enraptured by her and uses shady dark guild science to implant his mana in her. Though this still isn't the proper type of magic for her family and gives her a different class(Samurai, MC's class, yes I know) than what is intended(Paladin, her father's class) so he has to wing it and cover it up as best he can. The guy who ordered the hit however has also hired another organization on this subject which also has dark shady magic science that attempts to kidnap her and perform a different type of forceful magic transfusion to change her class to paladin. They are seemingly super powerful. However MC shuts down their efforts hard and tells them to go back and report lies as he is a half-vampire(yes, yes I know), vampires being the most powerful monsters in the setting. His wish to nurture the main girl being so high that she would let her slay him if they ever truly had to fight due to that fact.

Basically it's more of a shoujo plot veiled as a magic battle harem. Main positive is main girl is cute, quite obviously the intended winner, and that she's actually super diligent and has to work for everything she can because she's aware she's a worthless failure. Whether it turns out she's actually special down the line I don't know as I've only read what's translated of the manga.

I tried to read the manga in english, the first chapter already has what I suspect to be a serious mistake where at the beginning they said he killed all those guys in the room in 5 minutes which made no sense given the context of the paneling showing one short continuous scene so I checked the chinese translation and it was 5 seconds.

So there are a few noticeable differences between Volume 1 of the Light Novel and the first three volumes of the manga
-We see Elise's 1st round battle in which she takes on all five of her opponents on her own, it's a sequence of Elise being wailed on for no effect and then she goes SOL BRANDIS and blows her enemies away.
Except the gunner, she ambushes her first. This is a theme throughout the entire series: Gunners are serious business for everybody, do not fuck around with them.
-There's more time spent on Elise's morning before that breakfast with Othello and Rosetti, more lead up to how she feels about everything.
-There's a short story after the epilogue about the last day of training before Melida fights twintails

The short story is a different kind of training: They're both in an abandoned mansion, Melida has a map of all the secret passages and knowledge of the traps, she's got ten hours to try and lay hands on her teacher.
Except she can't use any mana at all. This is to teach her how to approach situations when she's at a serious disadvantage, and what kind of mindset will lead her to victory - and what will defeat her before the battle is even fought.
It's surprisingly insightful, but not included with the normal version of volume 1, only the special releases. The story can be found in older releases of Dragon Magazine. I kinda want to TL it, pic related

As an aside, when it comes to whether or not this is classified as a shoujo or serious business battle school series, I'd say it gleefully trespasses into both.
For example, the prologue of one of the LN volumes has Kufa being blackmailed in exchange for maintaining his cover, being thrown into a mission of national security involving fratricide, terrorism, innocents getting killed via collateral damage, all kinds of unreasonable dangers and hindrances, and one of the 3 Dukes asking him to Die For Them.
The next scene jump is Melida lovingly reading an embarrassingly sappy romance novel about a older commoner soldier drunkenly pronouncing his feelings for the younger princess and mourning about how it cannot be, lots of tears from everyone. Self insertion might have been thought about there.

Now, the other possible explanation behind Melida not having mana is that the Paladin factor is becoming or is recessive - she is a legitimate child and Fergus could not pass on the class.
Which sounds outlandish, but if it's true, then Flandor's noble system could very well be doomed through the march of time. Fewer and fewer mana users, more and more kids abandoned, even larger burdens placed on the soldiers.

When viewed in that light, then people are unconsciously hopeful that Fergus really did get cucked, because the alternative is really, really, really bad. The nobles will do anything to try and cover it up. There are three named characters in series that have obtained mana and a class when they had neither before.. Kufa is not on this list. And the how behind it is very different for them. Kufa is not responsible for all three of them. Melida is the only one of these who drank the potion.
There are theories about how this ties into how humans obtained mana in the first place, and what each of these characters had in common. Regardless though, it's pretty clear that there can be no military solution to Flandor's dilemma, and never will be.
