well I hope they know general anatomy better than they know teeth, the fucking dentists here I tell you what. last guy I went to was an absolute mangler and wanted to put fillings in all of my teeth with any sign of prior erosion, even when other dentists had checked the damaged areas and found that there was currently no active decay taking place and the enamel was stable. I let him replace one filling and add a couple others and the fucking asshole made the filling so bad my teeth didn’t mesh anymore. I went back in the next week and said “nice job doc I can’t chew, can you maybe shape the filling like a tooth you think?” and he drilled it and filed it down a few more times, and he still left it and the other resin fillings rough and squeaky. I was supposed to go in the next week so he could ruin some more teeth but I said fuck it and stopped answering his (frequent) calls. I paid all my bills but he apparently couldn’t stand the idea that I still had some functioning teeth left.

The question of whether hell is a punishment or not is easily decided at face value: it's forever so it's not a punishment. If I punish my dog the objective is to end up with the same dog, just not acting like an asshole. Exiling my dog forever does not do this; it is not a punishment. If my dog reforms itself, I still don't get my dog back.
This is why comparing hell to punishment by a strict parent doesn't work: the parent wants you to get better and provides an avenue for you to do that.
