Kyoani was an actual high quality studio back in the day and many of the people who hate Kyoani now were actually fans themselves of old Kyoani or at the very least respected their works back then. Air, FMP Fumoffu, FMP TSR, Haruhi, Lucky Star, Kanon, Clannad all ranged from good to amazing anime staples that will still be recommended many years from now. All of that changed the second K-On came out. The difference in output (both quality and type of output) between pre- and post-K On Kyoani is staggering.

Man, it's been almost ten years since Satoshi Kon died, and I still get depressed when I think about all the great movies he could have made if he had lived longer.
