So she tries to provide a caring home environment for Asuka and shinji (sorry rei) and balance her authority and easygoingness.

Watching NGE the first time, it’s easy to tunnel vision on shinjis experience living in a new home and having the pilot responsibility, but on rewatches I pay more and more attention to how difficult and self-giving misato must be to take 2 troubled adolescents into her home and try to raise them to be people

My interpretation wasn't that she promised him sex, because she knew she was dying, but that she promised him a future where he could have an intimate relationship with someone.

So while she may have a better understanding of Shinji's psyche, living with her is always going to be constant struggle. Just because two people may understand each other better doesn't mean they're a good company for each other. Shinji needs somebody more emotionally mature than him. Putting together two mentally deranged people will always only result in them pulling one another down.

Regardless of her motivations, the outcome was that the pilots didn't have to live alone and bear all the burden all by themselves, especially Shinji who benefited greatly from the homely experience up to a point. That's not how it works, once the narcissistic personality sets in it's there for good. It doesn't help that Asuka's conditioning was on the extremely extreme end and took place during her most crucial formative years. I know, maybe not even really a totally happy ending, Just have them survive the NGE timeline without Third Impact happening. They'd be still sort of fucked up and traumatized but the hardest shit in their lives is over, and they're seen as saviors of mankind so they'll likely have their basic needs taken care of for the rest of their lives and they can just focus on repairing their broken selves.

We see Toji focusing on physical rehab and Hikari getting closer to him though that.
Asuka's ego gets so that she gets the idea that she could get into politics and rule either Japan or the whole United Nations because who would vote against one of the people who saved humanities collective ass?
Shinji's starts a bit too broken but little by little goes back to normal because time does that.
Rei is the most lost one knowing all she knows about herself but finding herself living in the regular world despite not being prepared at all for it. But she's helped out by Shinji & even Asuka because now that she's over her Mommy issues she's finding it to be nicer even to Rei.

That actually would be a clever way to sort of redo the point of the original NGE in a Rebuild era context.
