Know of any concrete examples? I regularly hear about people getting things done through fraternity buddies, professional contacts, rotary clubs and other old boys' networks, but never through Mensa. It seems to be something of a laughing stock among clubs that present themselves as exclusive.

Maybe. It also presents itself to do awareness work and stuff like that, it's not just a society and a club, but it's still exclusive like all of those that you mentioned. It's conjecture, yes, but a relatively safe guess. It's not something like Freemasons who privately screen applicants to keep their lodges and networks healthy, but you still get to meet people who are often on the upper echelons of society, and by being part of Mensa now ostensibly as equals.
