Based.
What is the point of waiting? It'll be the same shit flick he always does.
Shinkai is an overrated hack who blinds you with flashy visuals
What's it even about?
Are his movies that bad?
Post your fav shows and movies. Let's see how they are better than Shinkai's "same shit flick" and "blinding flashy visuals"
They are stunning. Just watch a couple and disregard Yea Forums's "mainstream bad" mentality.
Watch more anime.
BASED
Dread it. Run from it. My masterpiece still arrives.
I didn't realise Shinkai had so many dedicated haters. His movies are pretty harmless.
I did. More than you probably. You are just a contrarian bitch that likes to hate popularity. Still no answer though, what is better than his work? If it's so bad, you should be able to name 5-10 OVA from different creators.
The only Shinkai film you need is 5cm per second, it's his best looking film, his shortest and his one that doesn't pretend to have a plot and focuses on the moments, and all his films are basically the same so you aren't missing too much.
So just delete all the reviews. I don't know why these retarded review sites open reviewing before the movie is released, promoting stupid fanboyism and hype. You watch, THEN you review.
Just a PSA to newfaggots. Hating popular things does not make you fit in on Yea Forums. Contrarianism has never been Yea Forums culture. Displaying it only outs you as Yea Forumsermin.
Based. The hack has been making the same movie for over a decade and he can't keep getting away with it.
I was spamming "5cm/s is shit" pastas on Yea Forums before you were born faggot
To be fair he just keeps making the same fucking movie and overshilling in every commercial on jp television
Are they really reviews, or people just saying that they are not interested in watching it?
They're fucking horrid. They appeal to 15 year olds and immature women.
A Silent Voice was popular and I liked that. Your Name was popular and I hated that. Whoops, has nothing to do with popularity.
Vapid shitty romances with nothing characters and poor excuses for plots riddled with holes. Avoid at all cost.
There is literally nothing wrong with hating something popular, the problem is hating something because it's popular.
I bet 80 of them are double accounts of Yamakan
twitter.com
According to someone who has seen the movie, how the love of 2 young people changed the world.
But Yamakan loved Your Name.
Do you really trust Yea Forums?
Shinkai haters? More like Kyoanizaki fans.
Based Chadkai dabbing those faggot of
haven't user sung zen zen zense yet? I wanna listen to it.
Based
I doubt Yea Forums existed in 2001, oldman.
Too good to be song by foggots
But it did in 2007 when it was released.
I guess he meant to say he was being a silly contrarian while you were a 5 year old sucking on your mom's supple tits.
They're literally fine.
They're shallow, flashy and emotionally manipulative, but so is plenty of the shit Yea Forums likes, they only shit on him hard because he's popular with the normies.
I even like Shinkai but I wish he would try doing a non-romance once.
Probably just Ghiblitards and Miyazakitards. They have been hating Shinkai since forever, all because Shinkai ousted that fat fuck from his throne.
>silent shit was popular
On Reddit and E-celeb videos. Guess it just shows how bad your taste really is.
Imagine being this much of a hater just because some other guy is successful.
Not one of his movies is actually bad, but he's massively overrated because they're easy, have wide appeal, and look good.
based.
you can tell what the movie is going to be without even watching it, that kind if shit deserves a 0, they're being generous.
where do I go to give it bad reviews right now
Hate it all you want faggots, shinkai is still going to pull up with this raging 30cm cock and jizz all over the anime world
Spirited away fanart got over 200k likes on twitter. Ghibli still reigns. Totoro, Laputa, and especially Nausicaa are all childhood classics among the nips.
>muh twitter likes
There's hentai that gets over 200k likes on twitter.
>childhood
Well yes, only children watch that shit.
seething
Yea Forums acts like everything is bad.
Success will always breed jealously. And Shinkai is the mosy successful.
his movies are comfy and use emotional manipulation to hook the viewer. Without the effects and animation they would look stupid and cheesy.
I’m talking fanart. Fanart reaching those numbers is impressive. I’ve seen plenty fanart with over 100k likes, mainly F/GO related, but not over 200k. That’s pretty rare. Ghibli fanart also reached 500k.
>watch that shit
Come back when any Shinkai film is considered a classic among nips.
he does the laugh track equivalent of romances and people still gob that shit up.
why are normalfags so dumb?
You know how popular sitcoms with laugh tracks are right?
what the fuck would an 18 year old zoomer know about Yea Forums culture?
Well, I'm already back then.
You shouldn’t be.
Yamakan is a massive Shinkai fanboy though.
Your Name and Hoshi no Koe both made it pretty high up on Shinchosha's critic poll for the greatest anime of all time. Your Name tied with Beautiful Dreamer and Grave of the Fireflies.
>If you just remove good things about a film, suddenly it's not as good
Suffering from success.
Name one successful show or movie that doesn't use emotional manipulation. You sound like a retard.
>Post your fav shows and movies
How would this invalidate what user said though?
>On Reddit and E-celeb videos
Same place as every Shinkai flick then?
Man, I don't like Shinkai but that's stupid/
Bad? I don't know. Bland, repetitive, and empty? Yes
The "new Miyazaki" meme started when Place Promised came out, before youtube and reddit even existed.
The "meme" was practically nonexistent and became relevant only after the latest works though (which admittedly became relevant enough to Shinkai comment on it himself).
they're good but not really worth of their praise. Shinkai should just remain as an art director or something
>Caring about japanese imdb
It's gonna make billion of yens and haters gonna be BTFO like always
The meme is older than Shinkai's directorial career itself and ends up hitting any successful anime director with normalfag appeal, none of which with a fraction of the talent and generally anything to do with Miyazaki.
Did Hosoda get hit by this meme?
you're so mad about something that isn't worthy of dedicating this much energy
shoe teacher and name are good, everything else bad
No but he might have if he'd been the one to direct Howl's Moving Castle as planned
Yes.
They are legitimately bad, though. His male MCs are so bland and badly written they could star in the most generic isekai, and the obligatory love interests have no characteristics besides "nice Japanese girl". Garden of Words was the only time when he slightly deviated from the formula, because otherwise you don't even need a synopsis/key art to know what the movie will be a milquetoast drama about bland, insipid teenagers in love.
Should I go see it on Friday?
I'm not a Shinkai fan, but I might do it just to dab on you NLIJEOPs.
Emotionally manipulative and pretty eh overall (usually rehashed story, bland characters, etc), but yeah has lots of normalfag appeal and do look great.
based shinkai
Yojiro Noda (RADWIMPS) has retweeted it.
They're popular with women and Yea Forums is filled with women hating incels so naturally they hate those movies.
>They are legitimately bad, though. His male MCs are so bland and badly written they could star in the most generic isekai
Explain how they're badly written.
>and the obligatory love interests have no characteristics besides "nice Japanese girl".
This is only true in 5cm and that's because we don't actually see much of her.
>"new Miyazaki"
Why Shinkai though
not Yuasa, Hosoda or some other popular director?
Should've ignored it
They're just giving it publicity if they actually care about the ratings
Because of this
>not Yuasa, Hosoda or some other popular director?
Not sure if you've ever seen any of Yuasa's films but most of the stuff he makes doesn't even appeal to the general public. Do you think Mind Game, Lu or Walk on Girl where box office hits?
But did it tie with a Miyazaki work?
Because his flicks have as much substance as Miyazaki's
this, it's why we need more representation in anime
Didn't Yuasa release some romance flick just recently? How did that go?
How do you think
So Miyazaki's still on top
what's wrong?
>2001
>currently screening
Ghibli sure is a desperate studio and Miyazaki a pathetic loser. That's all this really told us. This current campaign has exposed Ghibli as the pathetic losers they are. The child that can't cope with losing. Studio wasn't respectable before, but now it's become impossible to take them seriously.
Has 500 ratings on Yahoo. For comparison: Mirai no Mirai has 10,000.
Possibly because neither Hosoda nor Yuasa were writing their own scripts.
Hoshi no Koe tied with Spirited Away
>I don't know
oh ok
>Hoshi no Koe tied with Spirited Away
I'm on Princess Mononoke>Spirited Away camp, but fucking how?
>Spirited Away offs all of a sudden airing again
lmao how can you be so petty
but they need funds for Miyazaki's next retirement film
>neither Hosoda nor Yuasa were writing their own scripts.
So that's why, unlike MIyazaki's films, theirs are actually good. Huh, very interesting.
No anime film will top Kimi no Nawa
I also like the JAV parody
Are Shinkaitards honestly seething at Spirited Away finally being able to release in China and deservedly reclaiming its #1 spot from Shitkai's vapid mediocrity?
LMAO, genuinely embarrassing.
Not well
>¥173,345,000
And got mixed reviews in japan which you can look up. But Yuasa movies aren't mainstream
Amazing how they can find funding with these results
I mean, the only Miyazaki films that were higher were Nausicaa and Laputa, which probably gives some insight into what Japs liked about him in the first place. Princess Mononoke didn't even chart.
>190703594
Not really, but you will be when it gets back on top a few years down the line. Maybe not, since Hackzaki will probably be dead by then.
It's for sakugafags and cryfags. Take that as you well.
Can you post the full chart? First time I'm hearing this
Chinese Nationalists were brigading against his movie during the Chinese theater run
>It's for sakugafags
And here we see a speciman of the retard.
>Shinkai haters
How does that happen? Are they betas bitter that Shinkai abandoned the betacore genre he himself created? Are they chads angry that even though the MC appears like he's about to score, the act never happens, so they can't self-insert?
Yuasa's Science Saru has an insanely efficient production process, thanks to Flash among the other things. In 2017 he released 2 movies, in 2018 a series, this year a movie and a TV show this fall, and he already has in production another TV show for 2020 and another movie for 2021.
It'll be a hard task to surpass Mitsuha's film, but I wish Hina's movie will be atleast a moderate success.
Based on trailers alone:
Hina >>> Mitsuha
Once you've seen one you've seen all he has to offer. Very pretty but bland.
They are paid Ghibli shills. Should be pretty obvious.
>paid Ghibli shills
Ghibli doesn't have enough money to fund shills at the moment.
Hence
People with taste
It was here: kankokunohannou.org
There's a thread from 2 years ago on the archive that lists the results though: boards.fireden.net
>paid Ghibli shills on an imageboard
But for what purpose
They can be good, but some of them have retarded plot structure.
5 centimeters per second is a story about letting go, and moving on from past stuff you can't reach anymore for example, but then he makes every single character act retarded or go to the extreme negative end of what they should be doing to make long distance work, like knowing her number or address but never sending a single fucking text (he writes it out and then pussies out every single time for no reason since they were still on good terms) even though you met again by riding on train and almost didn't manage it, or pretend they inherently forgot about you as an excuse to not try to communicate.
The only good thing about that one is the colorful visuals honestly, the story itself is trying too hard to be "realistic", while making everyone act like they have brain damage.
Same reason Yea Forums has paid shills
Voices of a Distant Star: 3/10
The Place Promised in Our Early Days: 4/10
5 Centimeters per Second: 7/10
Children Who Chase Lost Voices: 2/10
The Garden of Words: 6/10
Your Name: 5/10
>5 Centimeters per Second
>highest score
How? How can you possibly think that one was good?
>Oh woe is me, we'll be moving away to different prefectures, but we'll act like we moved to different countries
>We'll now never try to talk to each other ever again, even though we are aware of where we live, and i'll pretend any type of reach out is just pity and wallow in misery EVEN THOUGH OUR LAST MEETING WAS COMPLETELY POSITIVE
>I'll just forget about this boy I like, because he keeps looking at his cellphone and that must mean he has a deep love for someone already, and I have no chance, also surfing or something
>By the way, look at the pretty lights
>image boards
First of all, you don't pay shills to invade one place specifically. Second, that rating is from Yahoo so they are shilling against Tenki no Ko on the biggest "film review" website in Japan.
I just like the songs
>(he writes it out and then pussies out every single time for no reason since they were still on good terms
You just don't understand the human condition
But surely people with taste have better things to do than frantically downvote a hack's flick on some faggy social media platform three days before it's released. When I see a tastelet raving about some trite shit I don't even grace him with my (You). No, this has to be personal, Shinkai must have done something to those people to deeply offend them.
He might be a leftist
Also Chinese/Korean Nationalists hate him.
He considers bittersweet reddit shit to be good, that's all there is to it. People who rate garbage like 5cm/s live under the illusion that happy ending are immature and for the mentally underdeveloped, while bittersweet ending are for the intellectually elevated because it's "realistic". The sad part is said people rarely know anything about realism. They are just bitter and try to find confirmation in media.
That's another one I don't get. Why would chinks hate him of all people.
Only loyal nationalists hate him
Others worship him to the point of plagiarizing his films for propaganda
>Why would chinks hate him of all people
He's Japanese
That's enough reason.
I think what pisses me off the most about it is that the girl is implied to still be waiting for him to reach out to her, and still thinks of him a bit even as they're in college years, and the guys never does anything.
Meanwhile, the guy who can't let go, wallows in misery thinking about her not liking him anymore of having forgotten him, never does anything to try to change that, even in the ending where he spots her he just stands there gawking and then she just vanishes and the movie acts like that's a good thing.
That's not how it fucking works.
And Kyoaniggers still wonder why everyone hates them.
Rent free
Its the same movie as always
He can only make one thing
Not liking something is normal. But hating something screams insecurity. If you don't like something, why even talk about it? But outright hating is just attention seeking behavior, the same thing that SJW's do when they want something censored.
>But hating something screams insecurity.
I think the denial of having a strong reaction to something screams insecurity more than anything you try make it out to be.
Because his critism is so incredible vapid i could say something equally as shallow about his favorite show.
>If you don't like something, why even talk about it?
This has to be the most pathetic argument I've read in a long while.
good
Incels trying to debate. Lol.
It's not as if people live to hate on something, most of the time they come in to talk about their negative perception of it when it gets brought up.
If someone does make threads about it themselves just to shit on it constantly, then I think the person has a problem, but making your argument when a thread talking about the topic gets brought up is different.
>If you don't like something, why even talk about it?
>rants about muh sjws
Great job retard.
something something bland, fuck shinkai etc.
lmao, what do you mean? thats everything to do with popularity.
A silent voice was a unanimous mediocrity and complete fuck up of an incredibly popular manga, lukewarm reception on the whole, which got absolutely btfo'd simply by releasing within a year radias of your name.
This in addition to the fact that it was directed by Yamada who has incredibly cancerous fags swearing up and down it would be the better film, only to get absolutely btfo'd by shinkais original.
Outing yourself as a koi no katachi fan, and a your name hater completely invalidates your opinion lmfao.
I don't know how you missed it but she's engaged. The whole point of the ending is that she's long moved on and that he should have too instead of living in limbo.
No, Your Name out grossed this film in 2 years, doing what it did in over a decade is lessn then a quarter of the time.
Sure but they went about it in a retarded way. I've seen people do long distance, and I saw it work, even for stuff that takes years until they can become close again. People just don't get struck with negativity as soon as they arrive on their new home, and never attempt communication, if anything they try to make small talk everyday, and sometimes it breaks off after a while, and sometimes it works.
The main deal breaker is usually the lack of contact, or intimacy, but they were too young so the latter part wasn't as big of deal, so the first one is entirely on the characters for not making a single effort to make it work.
kek
>mfw Boss Babby had more chance at the academy than my kino film
>six Ghibli titles
Who can compete?
To be fair, there wasn't that much to debate.
Looks like a bald persons head in the thumbnail.
>Incel
Holy reddit.
Shinkai films are pretty to look at, but his writing isn’t good. I didn’t care for the MCs of Your Name, and I wasn’t sold on their romance at all. I’m not sold on Shinkai romance to be honest. That’s just me though.
Why Yamada?
and why does she look like she cried her heart out?
Making one thread after getting annoyed by a turd isn't that bad either in my opinion (not that I've ever done it).
Yea Forums are teenage contrarians again. There's a reason he's one of the best directors alive.
I thought boomers hate Shinkai?
Visually great but stories are 6-7/10.
>Place Promised
How could it start with the worst movie?
>he's one of the best directors alive.
Boomers don't watch anime. It's a general problem with edgy teenagers that they have a gut reaction to hearing someone else call something good. It's like they believe everything reverse psychology and that agreeing in itself is conforming and must be opposed.
It's not just you, it's anyone who cares about the writing.
It's completely basic run of the mill romance.
Pic from novel release event.
>moe poster
disregarded.
I thought all the nips loved Shinkai?
>romance is so shit that a secondary character has to tell the MC that he's in love
I hate this shitty romcom trope.
Individually, Oshii, Miyazaki, Takahata, Tomino and Shinkai are about equally prominent on the list. Relative to how much they put out, Oshii is on top with Tomino wayyyy at the bottom.
You're only looking at narrative as if that is the sole thing that makes a movie. Never mind how lacking his skills as a writer are, Shinkai is unexciting but competent enough as a director.
At the time it received a lot of praise. Even though most people agree Shinkai has gotten better over time, he's only gotten less well-liked by the anime community.
>so many cute jap girls
Wtf, I'm a Shinkaichad now.
>not noticing the parallel to Mitsuha's role in Sayaka and Teshi's relationship or realising that she was actually incorrect at the time
I think Shinkai makes his movies for ronery guys on their 30s but if someone outside that demographic, let's say young boys or even females, watch his movies, he's OK with that. Most probably Shinkai sees himself as a ronery guy despite he has been married for many years
His last actually "ronery" film was 5cm/s, in which Shinohara was named after his ex-girlfriend (who worked on Hoshi no Koe with him btw).
Garden of Words is almost like that but ends with the implication that Takao will meet Yukari again.
>spoiling yourself before the movie comes out
is this really a thing?
People already know it won't have a happy ending. Only reaosn to watch it now is to look at the backgrounds. The conclusion is doomed to be dogshit no matter what he does.
The ronery path is a state of the mind. It's more about childhood traumas and mommy issues than relationship experiences. Also writers tend to mellow down when they get older.
huh
so an absolute flop incoming then
>go to japan
>visit bookstore
>ask qt worker for help
>show her picture of Your Name artbook
>she smiles and giggles
The Japanese love Shinkai and Shinkai haters are all probably all uggos
I was at a gig once and the guy said as a flippant half joke that "there isn't much point in singing about anything but love". I heartily disagree with the sentiment, but there's some truth to it.
Love is one of the strongest emotions we feel, and a pretty dominating one. Additionally, it's something that most people are familiar with in some way, thus it's nearly always relatable, whether it's fluffy romance or agonizing heartbreak.
Shinkai has his niche and works within it, because it just works. It's boring, but safe too.
I've heard that Shinkai fans have sex at least 5 times/week. Way above the Japanese average.
Of course. Shinkai hasn't learned after all.
>one of the strongest emotions we feel
>boring, but safe too
>nearly always relatable
>his niche
I'm pretty sure that his 5cm per Second were targeted towards male robots/doomers
Also, the OST is out now. So the 5 theme songs might start popping up online anytime now.
Fucking finally
I'm pretty sure all his movies are targeted toward males but women are used to see things through the male perspective because the patriarchy so it's really not a big deal. It's way more common for women to get into shounen/seinen than guys into shoujo/josei.
Full version of the uplifting chorus song is gonna be worse than the trailer one. I can already smell it.
>Sayaka and Teshi's relationship
Ah yes the other shitty romcom trope, the pair of borderline comedic relief side characters who are obviously meant for each other but don't realize it until far into the story. Just another insincere tired cliche, nothing meaningful about it or any supposed "parallel".
>she was actually incorrect at the time
She wasn't.
Does Grand Escape have a JP title or no?
Watch Nobuhiko Obayashi's Tenkousei. It's Your Name but kino
Yes: グランドエスケープ
>-haters
>implying
maybe the movie just isn't that good, dumbass
it's not even out, dumbass
Well maybe we would hate women less if they had better taste instead of liking Shinkai's flicks
>"why are all other anime directors so mediocre? do i have to save anime all by myself?"
took you 5 flops to make bank
For the first 5 years or so Hoshi no Koe was getting 10/10s across the board, people who disliked 5cm/s were the first wave of people to shit on it. Yamakan said in an interview that when he watched it back in 2003 he thought "A really amazing person made this", and that was a pretty common viewpoint for people both inside and outside the industry.
There was a movie before 5cm/s right?
They didn't give a shit at all about that?
but Spirited Away only had a small international release that time
and that's after it won an Oscar
Place Promised? Nah, if you look through reviews from that time it was pretty well received and wasn't as popular as 5cm to warrant any sort of backlash
5 wallpapers per Second's build-up was too short for me to appreciate the final act. Should have been longer
He's not a writer but he tries to write sentimental and emotionally manipulative things. If you're not a teenager that has unrequited crush or stuck at that stage, you won't be able to relate to it.
>For the first 5 years or so Hoshi no Koe was getting 10/10s across the board
Pretty embarasing in retrospect.
Anyone who says all his shit is the same has clearly never saw the dumpster fire that was Children Who Chase Lost Voices. It had the distinction of being the film where it was clear he was drinking the Next Miyazaki kool aid by the gallon, what with its clear attempt to ape the Ghibli fantasy style. It looked good, but was definitely missing something.
Skipped part 2 of it, didn't miss anything relevant. It's the song that apparently makes up for the ronery feeling
Eat shit you fucking hack
he is getting better
not good enough though
still has 30+ years to have the same catalog size as Ghibli.
That trainwreck should have been panned hard, but Shinkai drones are too retarded.
>He's not a writer but he tries to write sentimental and emotionally manipulative things.
He attained a degree in literature before his start in animation for Falcom and his simultaneously released books and manga are often more well received than his films
Is anyone even among his fanbase recommend that show?
The only ones I always hear are Voices, 5cm/s, Garden of words (for the feet not story) and Your Name
>He attained a degree in literature
Oh, well, that changes everything.
I'm just saying he literally is "a writer"
It doesn't get mentioned much nowadays, but at the time it was well received.
He is also an artist but his art is basically extremely glossy and detailed wallpapers. It's pretty but also kind of shallow.
Kyoani shows are spammed like this before release too. It's probably the same autists who spammed Liz and the Blue Bird with negative scores before it came out too.
reminder that VEG was in MAL's top 10 before it came out
>implying he's not actually responsible for it and false flagging
You're too obvious, KHK. Just hang yourself.
That's an exception and so was SG0.
Evergarden was spammed with bad ratings before it came out on IMDB though. Same with Liz, it had like a 4/10 overall with a dozen 1 star votes.
Of course not, most of them are amazing especially The Garden of Words.
I can tell that the Garden of Words is being shilled just for the aesthetics.
>A 1 hr film
>Nothing happens for 3/4ths of the show
>Last 1/4 is cringe with student/teacher drama with shouting/chasing
This.
How many times are you going to spam this shit? His movies are obviously notably different even if you lack the capacity to differentiate between them.
Cry more false flagger. Kyoani and Shinkai are the best this medium has to offer. Their works tend to be in similar vein too.
This. Fuck contrarianism.
You are wrong but even if that were the case, who gives a fuck? How many cheap shitshows are shilled just because the plot/story is supposedly good?
>him
>leaving a Japanese review on a nip site
I'm sure he knows some basic moonrunes and he is obsessed beyond anything.
There's a whole lot of fanboying going on in this thread.
More like;
Voices of a Distant Star: 7.5/10
The Place Promised in Our Early Days: 8/10
5 Centimeters per Second: 9/10
The Garden of Words: 9.5/10
Your Name: 8.75/10
>tiniest bit of praise
>There's a whole lot of fanboying going on in this thread.
Based anti shinkai drone.
Yes they are the most boring movies I have ever seen in my life. Every one of them. I am not shitposting.
Watch more movies
The sun is up!
Tenki no Ko will be so great
feels good to be a shinkaichad
Are the OST/insert songs available somewhere already?
>Contrarianism has never been Yea Forums culture
Lmao look at this fella trying to fit in
Is this the 'Captain Marvel' scandal equivalent in anime?
>Because his critism is so incredible vapid
On the contrary it is laconic and entirely spot on. Everyone familiar with Shinka's work already go in knowing what to expect - pretty visuals wrapped around the same cookie cutter emotional story lines. Style without substance which appeals to emotional babies and intellectual simpletons.
No. People hated Captain Marvel because they watched it and genuinely thought it was terrible. People hate on Shinkai just because their beta directors can't compete against his brilliant mind and God-given talents.
All art is arguably for emotional babies and intellectual simpletons, move past the New Criticism trappings you've subscribed to
You outed yourself as a Yea Forumsermin, congratulations
it's true that the plot of your name was a bit silly and contrived at times. but putting aside the surface level boy-meet-girl plot, i happened to read an interview where shinkai discussed the themes he wanted to convey and it made me wonder if most westerners (including me) are simply unable to empathise with and feel strongly about said themes compared to his home audience
do you have a link of that?
>On the surface, it's a 'boy-meets-girl' story. The boy meets a girl, and loses her, and gets to meet her again: that's the structure of it. This follows the traditional boy-meets-girl storyline. Japanese youth desire and demand such a straightforward boy-meets-girl story.
>But underneath the surface of 'Your Name' is a story where countless people were saved from disaster by a young girl's dreams of divine revelation. Ever since 2011, we Japanese have always wondered 'what if I were in your shoes ...'. To put it another way, the feeling of 'what if I was not the person I was back then [during the disaster (but in fact someone who died or got injured or someone who decided to go out and save people etc.)]'. 'What if at that time, at that place, I was there', or 'what if a huge disaster struck Tokyo tomorrow'. Rather than simply saying that we have become more sympathetic, it's more of an impression of the possibility that disaster could be thrust upon us at any moment which has deeply ingrained itself within our subconscious.
>Of course, I think part of me has changed over the years. But I guess the 2011 earthquake was a really big trigger for me. Prior to 2011 we all thought that somehow 'Japanese society would just continue like that without issue'. Of course, our population was dropping and the size of our economy was shrinking etc. and we had the premonition that our society was slowly declining. But we thought that our 'never-changing everyday' would continue evermore without much disruption.
>In order for us to live in such a world, it is important that we are able to derive meaning from our unchanging everyday lives, whether it's a convenience store or being late for a train. I think that is important that from trivial things, we are able to derive the love that enables us to live on, as well as other deeply meaningful things.
>In such a climate, rather than a story like 'If I could just be with first love once more, I would have been happy', I felt that it was essential to depict a story in film where 'Despite losing my first love, I can continue to live on' by extracting meaning from loss as a way of life. However, from 2011 henceforth, I think this assumption fell apart completely.
>A town will not always be a town. It will disappear someday. Exactly as Taki stated in an interview in the film, 'We will never know when Tokyo might just someday disappear'. We live with that sentiment now. As for a story depicting that sentiment, it has to be one where one runs without giving up towards the future, and lives on to the very end. Indeed, I think that compared with prior to 2011, what everyone now seeks and desires has changed.

it's in japanese there's a tl on reddit
>The contrast that Shinkai draws between the pre-quake and post-quake psyche appears to be, amongst many things, one about passivity versus proactiveness. In the former, it's okay for really bad things (as well as trivially good/bad things) happen to you, as long as you derive meaning from them. In the latter, you need to actively think about others, sympathise with others, empathise with others, help others, do things for others, and constantly strive to make the world a better place, because you never know when the world will end.
>you need to eat shit to know its shit
>I felt that it was essential to depict a story in film where 'Despite losing my first love, I can continue to live on' by extracting meaning from loss as a way of life.
But that becomes meaningless since they find each other again.
read the quote again, that was the story he initially wanted to write, but the 2011 quake changed his mindset
>you never know when the world will end
This is the most bizarre reason as to why someone should act like a decent human being, but all nips seem to be autistic on some level.
Is it safe to say that only emotionally stunted autists hate Shinkai films?
>Is it safe to say that only emotionally stunted autists hate Shinkai films?
Nope since his works are shallow. Best animated film of the year was pic-related anyways.
or more precisely, that was the kind of story that catered to pre-quake japan, but no longer appealed to post-quake japanese sentiment
it's less about acting like a decent human being and more about striving to do beyond just the necessary and what passes your interest. basically living like a 'normal' person versus a 'tryhard at life', to use a bad analogy
The Garden of Words is the only good one (mostly thanks to Kashiwa Daisuke music)
>dindu nuffin
>it's less about acting like a decent human being and more about striving to do beyond just the necessary and what passes your interest.
To me, acting like a decent human being does mean striving to go beyond the necessary, but I know many people don't see it that way.
>Is it safe to say that only emotionally stunted autists hate Shinkai films?
I like his films, but you sound like the sort of person who thinks Evangelion, Madoka or 3-Gatsu cater to emotionally mature or developed individuals, when in fact the only people who those shows will get an emotional response out of are the same emotionally stunted teens you're trying to make fun of.
so what shows do you think cater to those emotionally developed?
i don't mean it that way. i wasn't referring to whether having empathy for others, being courteous, having common human decency is necessary in the strictest sense of the word
what i mean by going beyond the necessary is something like purposely going out of your way to get out of your comfort zone, or putting aside inconvenience and the question of 'why bother, i'm living a comfy life' to pursue some big endeavour
Nice assumptions there friend. I think those series attract a lot of 3deep6u faggots which are the same people who tend to dislike Shinkai films for being too "shallow".
>smoothbrain
were YN threads this bad?
Hes talking about 5cm/s there I would assume
Since you're new here, yes they always have been
what is even bad about the thread?
They were good before the bluray release
After that they were pretty bad
But then they started to get good again a bit because the shitposters got bored.
>tfw shinkai's best work is a commercial
I think shinkai's movies are pretty shitty but I don't get these autistic spammers. Anyway, still waiting for him to make a movie not about muh distance.
I find his films beautiful to look at at. I even bought the artbook, but I just cannot get into his romance, which is a problem since he slips romantic love in every single work of his. Whereas the relationship of pic-related easily and instantly pulled me in. Their relationship not being explicitly romantic probably played a part in that. The couple in YN was one that just didn't convince me.
>born in 2001
How convenient. I bet you were born precisely on July 17th too, mr. adult.
i remember being so confused when mitsuha started crying at the mirror, because i didn’t realise that she was supposed to be deeply in love with taki in that scene. i remember asking my sister if she was also similarly confused and apparently, she wasn’t. because she had already taken for granted that mitsuha and taki were in love at that point, while i was still keeping an open mind that the director could be pulling anything to subvert my expectations
>they are popular with women

there's a recent fujo fanbase poll about the most anticipated anime in summer 2019.
Tenki only ranked 4th
>Goo! Ranking: Women's Most Anticipated Summer Anime Films
>One Piece Stampede (opens August 9)
>Children of the Sea (opened June 7)
>Ride Your Wave (opens June 21)
>Weathering With You (opens July 19)
>Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution (opens July 12)
>Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (opened June 15)
>Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! Kurenai Densetsu (opens August 30)
>Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Kingdom (opened June 14)
>Ni no Kuni (opens August 23)
>DRAGON QUEST YOUR STORY (opens August 2)
Shinkai is not as hot with fujos in Japan.
What exactly are you trying to say with this? It's not like all women are fujos.
But in the end weren't Utapri and Promare the most popular?
See
why would fujos care about a movie about pure romance?
For starters, they weren't fujos but women in general. At worst, female otakus and maybe some happen to be fujos. Second, Children of the Sea is number 2, right behind One Piece and it looks like romance
youtube.com
Maybe the female lead, pretty boys and the ocean is more appealing than a ronery guy's self-pity. The formula of the manic pixiv dream girl predates anime and it's a guy thing, centered on a guy's insecurity and troubles with growing up.
Children of the Sea doesn't look like a romance, and it isn't.
There's a kiss with boy-next-door boy and female lead is after a magical blond pretty boy, wiht the help of next-door boy of course
People whose first Shinkai flick was Kimi no Na Wa are now realizing he's a talentless hack who makes the same thing every time.
Look at his retrospective. It all rook the same.
Generic seishun eiga with an air of pretension.
Yeah, no. Children Who Chase Lost Voices was more Ghibli-ish than a boy-meets-girl scene.
One of the biggest hacks since Anno is back at it again. Someone please daddy Miyazaki to discipline him
no it didnt lmao
If you read the manga, you would know the kiss wasn't romantic and that the female lead isn't into any of those boys.
Who's the anime director for normalfag girls then?
Quoting Mamoru Oshii, cinema is a male art. There are studios employees that can appeal to women but authors is a different thing. Maybe Miya-san but his movies are more for little girls.
Right is a feminist. I mean a real one and not one those turmblr feminists that are into feminism because it's trendy
Left is some kind of moralfag that will die alone.
Both are a very niche demographic and that's why studios prefer to pander to normal girls
Homophobic bullying is still very strong on Japan, with gay teens often committing suicide and Japanese authorities often disregardering because fags and dykes are unproductive to society. It'd be nice if Your Name tackle this subject. Tenkousei did it and that was almost 30 years ago.
And that's a good thing. I want consistency.
Compare it to Hideaki Anno. You got animated shorts, OVAs, TV series, artsy live action, high budget live action, etc. Personal drama, romance, scif-fi, wacky comedy, etc but they all are Anno.
And they're all shit. Also, I don't watch live action, don't know why you would even bring that shit up.
They're pretty good and the general consensus reflected it at the time, but as usual, you get a handful of people assblasted that they didn't have the same emotional reaction to a wildly popular film. You end up with those same people endlessly bitter about something everyone moved on from.
>I don't watch live action
Opinion discarded
>watches live action
>implying his opinion matters
>in Yea Forums of all places
>People shitting on Hoshi no Koe
Newfags, probably. It was pretty amazing at the time for what it was, but I think that might be lost on nu-Yea Forums.
>Compare it to Hideaki Anno
What a useless activity. They're both good, and they do different things well.
It was shit back then like it is now. "Wooooohhhhhh this was made by one guy!!1!!1" is literally the only thing worth noting about that thing.
Why are Japanese reviewers so vindictive? They review bomb a LOT more than westerners.
She and Her Cat and 5cm per seconds was his masterpiece, everything else is mediocre.
t. resident of nu-Yea Forums who detail is lost on
>caring about irrelevant ratings and rankings
Why?
Didn't find a way.
A boy falls in love with a girl.
Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC’s own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.
Yea Forums has the worst memes.
How can it get a rating before it comes out?
>worse memes than the same old regurgitated wojaks and pepes
No, that would be Yea Forums
>"There were heartwarming moments, underwear shots, etc in his previous work. Well, why won't he stop doing this? I think he wants to attract public with eroticism because he has no imagination, how can we bring children to watch this? Please don't show erotic things so bluntly. It's something that should be hidden and not publicized by a movie with a nationwide release. This is like saying 'It's ok to have sex with minors'. This just shouldn't happen. Does he want to spark a wave of sexual crimes? Sexual harassment is a crime, and of course publishing child pornography is prohibited too. And yet it became a global phenomenon. Do we really need to show minors doing erotic stuff to appeal to an audience? It's basically sexual harassment, isn't it? Please don't advertise it on TV or public radio. I am a fool of a woman. Let's make better movies instead of watching movies made for monkeys, for the better of Japan. Wouldn't you like for us to be more cultural?"
movies.yahoo.co.jp
Are the haters/trolls even trying at this point? Why don't Yahoo just delete all this shit and close it down until the movie is released?
Because jap websites are retarded.
/pol/ has the best ones, by far
only 2 is good

Please stay there
the marvel series of the romance genre
what the fuck have you done to KyoAni
'Your Name' was actually good. Garden in the Words was OK too. All his earlier stuff was better but much more melancholy and down right depressing at times too.
Shinkai isn't fond of sexualizing his female characters. He's a footfag though
How is the OST out before the movie? What?
Zenzenzense was out months before the JP screening
They had to pay for their mediocrity.
what is this movie about?
Love and weather.
>contrarian cringelords
I'll be laughing at your pathetic existence when this film outsells Kimina.
Full OST coming in the next few hours to his channel youtu.be
Are you high? That film is utter trash. The inner monologues sound like something a 14 year old would write; despite the whole movie being one big fucking monologue, we learn almost nothing about the characters. Tell me something that you remember about the MC, or the main girl.
