Why are self insert characters inherently "bad" anyway? I never understood this. As long as they aren't the main character or overpowered in a way that overshadows the main character what does it matter?

The reason most mangaka are doing self-mascots nowadays is privacy and not letting their image affect the reader. Now that internet and especially Twitter is a thing and people don't respect privacy, revealing your face to public has no merits unless you want to literally sell yourself (like Tsukudani Norio).

Yeah I don't think anything specific happened. I remember Watsuki had a drawn avatar in RuroKen's volumes and that was in the mid 90s. Though it was a person and not like an animal or anything. YKK from around the same time period doesn't have an artist portrait at all and each volume just has a drawing of something. I don't have anything older than that that has anything like an artist blurb section to check.
