You cant be a mary sue character and the MC at the same time by definition, a mary sue is a perfect flawless author self insert that budgers into someone else's story for the writer's wish fullfillment. They are mutually exclusive.

God I hate this bullshit. Being an invincible protagonist, even if poorly written, doesn't make someone a Mary Sue. Mary Sues are ONLY if a work largely revolves around making a character out to be cool in flimsily justified ways as a proxy for the author. Goku is strong because he needs to be as strong as the new antagonist, and beats him so that his story never suffers a setback which fucks up the momentum, losing the mangaka readers. Toriyama gives zero shits about sucking Goku's dick for its own sake.

That movie was fucking pointless. It wasn't even Mary Sue wish fulfillment, just pointless. The new villain was a non-threat, to Goku or Vegeta. It was just a shitty piggyback film to buffer the space between God's and DBS, and to allow frieza to participate in future arcs, like Broly seems to have done.

no, gary stu much like their female counter part has to be intelligent and perfect across the board. Along with never creating problems but fixing them. Goku not only is dumb as fuck he is the cause of most of earths problems. Goku saved the earth from others sure but some of those are in response to Goku just existing or Goku asked for it. Goku keeps fucking up and he pulls through in OG dragonball, but as time goes on the guy makes more and more bad decisions. The man goes from adventurous spirit who loves to fight, to "bored moron who thinks the dragonballs will fix everything so its fine" kind of guy.
You can say he is on the fence of apathetic to sympathetic when dealing with villains. "Sure killing namekians is bad but you know frieza, there is this tournament and I will bring you back to life if we win. Oh hey Goat Space Wizard you cant kill these namekians, thats friezas thing!"
But in all seriousness, if anything Goku can be considered his own antagonist because of his curiosity and lust for fighting. No Gary Stu would do this.

vegeta was born an elite warrior, higher battle power than all the other saiyans. Except broly, but still goku only has his lust to fight and regular saiyan progression. Vegeta only started training after frieza died.
