this fight alone is more entertaining than ME!ME!ME!, especially the Rider Kick at the end. It's because Anno is an otaku that he was able to create such solid toku-inspired mecha fights, and not shitty ironic weeb-bait gif slideshows.

Some of the fights are cool but it isn't worth the minutes and minutes of characters having mental breakdowns and yelling in their own minds. There's only so many times I can watch Asuka break down about her mommy issues or Shinji scream like a bitch before I want to mute the fucking thing or skip ahead.

It's a good dilution of the whole waifu shit. One of them is a literal Oedipus-complex and the other one is that girl from high school who was friendzoning you while fucking some 30-year-old. There's also the older taller-than-thou experienced girl you kinda crush on but it's pretty obvious sex is so natural for her she's just using you. That one's back in business again, Makima from Chainsawman is a prime example.

But I don't think it was conscious on Anno's part. I think it's just one of those drug and depression induced accidental pieces. I mean look at the rebuilds.

I also view EVA fans with suspicion when they talk about the show's depth. Too many body pillows and figurines with cum stains on them. Also, lots of kids were cynical emo teens who drank the depression up.

One thing is seeing things that aren't there and another is doing your best to interpret terms and real concepts made by real people as they're shown and used on a story that you're watching.
EVA references Freud and Schopenhauer far too often for the events to not mean anything. It is also painfully yet purposefully vague in many aspects, as stated by the author.
Holes of vagueness mixed with real concepts shoved inside a cast of broken characters make for quite the story. People wouldn't be talking about it almost 30 years later if that wasn't the case. Analysis come and go but EVA stays.

Like it or not, that's depth.

Evangelion is the pseudo-intellectual's gateway to some very interesting concepts, but it never challenges the pseud by going more than knee deep into all the concepts it explores. The most prevalent theme of the show is the ego and how it relates to the reality around us, and whilst you may be distracted by the fever-dream visuals the message itself never goes beyond very simple concepts like "the ego is formed by the interactions we have with others and we define our own image when comparing ourselves to others" or "having no limits to one's form and reality prevents us from having a reference frame to define our own lives by".

There are many other such messages in the show and whilst many good points are made, the lack of focus on any of them and the pretentious artsy nature of the anime prevent it from conveying these points in an effective and engaging manner. Even the ultimate, anti-escapism message of the show is ruined by more pretence-ridden visuals, such as the addition of the live-action segment, culminating in the shot of the cinema going audience (get it? The show is talking to YOU! How clever, a fourth wall break!). The random use of Christian symbolism also demonstrates the lack of a coherent vision on the part of the author.

But the greatest offence committed by Evangelion is quite simple. It is not a good show. The characters are one dimensional -no, having mother and father issues does not count as depth- annoying, and not in the slightest bit likeable. The pacing is erratic, the art mediocre, and ultimately this anime comes off as more of a vehicle for the author's half-baked preachings than a coherent, engaging story.
