Well there's little chance the call is more than wishing Natsuo a happy birthday, but it will continue to shake Hina's resolve to push back into trying to be his gf again. As for Rui we'll likely see her character growth over the last ~4 months as she was single with her working partner in NY. Natsuo had his chance with Miyabi and closed that door when he had time to think it over sorting out his feelings. I don't think Rui will end up being as strong as she always tends to be more conflicted in romance with another outside of Natsuo, but the cook isn't really right for her other than they both have a passion for cooking and becoming better. Opposites attract for a reason and Natsuo's fire is the thing that always melts Rui's ice in the end. So Rui and the cook will try some fleeting moments and a smart Rui would realize that Natsuo is the one she always sees as the answer.

Meanwhile Hina has been dedicated to helping Natsuo, but even the manga characters agree that her goal to help Natsuo in any way to achieve his dreams is an unhealthy answer to life. She wants back in and Natsuo will *always* blush around her but he blushes around every girl that has an interest in him. Miyabi just got the blushes as they performed and that was closed quickly. Poor writing and character development there because the author wants to wrap up, but it was never going to go anywhere. The author seems specifically focused on having Natsuo resist any relationship beyond the sisters. Hina needs growth as she's been stagnant for so long now. Natsuo is not the answer. Going back to teaching and finding her passion for it should be her end goal. Romance will come from a character unlikely or unnoticed this whole time. No going back to Shuu as that would have happened by now.

I would be a little disappointed if it wasn't Natsuo and Rui in the end. Fate has them tied together whether they realized it or not since the first page and it would be fitting for the last page as well.

Her actions are often a result of her misunderstanding the concept of who is tied and attempting to step out of the way when she's the one attached.

Hina was his first love unrequited and then very requited, but that doesn't tie the string to them as she thinks it does.

And this is where the exception lies as it felt out of character. Suddenly Rui is mad at the situation and being sheltered despite the fact everyone around knows Rui gets a bit emotional and clumsy when something big is happening. The author wanted them broken up to grow, but it was poorly handled and I do think most would agree about that. What followed was some soapbox work about drug addiction and how far Hina will start to go to support Natsuo regardless of her own well-being.

I believe it's still classified as a harem series so of course it's a soap opera. Less Please Teacher and more Love Hina without the Tenchi Muyo humor aspects. DG actually follows a little closer to Ai Yori Aoshi in some ways but I'm not sure that is as well known as LH/TM/PT.

Rings have been a subplot with Hina for nearly 200 chapters with multiple arcs focusing on them. The necklace is literally something Sasuga forgot about and was forced to draw it back in after Ruifags flipped their shit.
