Just finished reading it. What a journey.
An extra volume with side stories is getting an official English release by Yen Press this year, titled "Shoulder-A-Coffin Kuro Side Story: Tsuioku Tabunowa".

This is all I could find for a cover. It's set to be released on Dec 17.
Kuro deserves more love, it is absolutely fantastic.
I got the artbook shipped from japan. In it was a slip saying the author was working on a new project and to look out for it.
It has some pretty nice art, too.
Really? That sounds great! Im looking forward to her new project then. Love both Kuro and GA to pieces.
Just ordered the artbook myself after finishing the manga. Kiyuduki's artwork is amazing.
I need to get my hands on that. It wasn't a super limited run right?
I hope someone scans their copy. There's a lot of art in there that I've never seen online, as well as an extra chapter but I don't read moonrunes so its lost on me.
As far as I'm aware it wasn't. It was only 40usd or so.
Fantastic. Kuro is one of my favorite manga, Satoko Kiyuzuki is one of my favorite mangaka in general. I think she got a raw deal with the GA adaptation honestly, she has a much drier wit in her writing than what came through in the show.
Why has this never been picked up for adaptation? GA got an anime, and I don't think many would disagree that's a worse manga (still not bad). Kino got two anime adaptations as well, and that's very similar, so I don't even think its a case of there not being a market for it
I think it would be a much harder series to adapt than GA was, tonally. There is a CD drama though, and Kuro's voice is superb. mega.nz
As for Kino, I got into this series because it was similar to Kino minus all of the overt political messaging. It doesn't have nearly the popular following though, so I'm doubtful it'll get adapted.
I haven't watched the GA anime. Was it good?
To be honest, I don't see Kiyuzuki's style working that well in animation, considering how playfully she utilizes the medium of manga, and how storybook-like her artwork and storytelling can get. So I'm not that sad about the lack of a Kuro anime.
Though, as , I'm still curious about why it never got one.
>new project
Fuck YES. Here's hoping it'll actually be a series and not, like, LN illustrations or something.
It's aight. Maybe not superb, but I thought it was plenty competent.
Personally I disliked it as it somehow turned GA hyperactive (as a whole, there are obviously a few hyperactive characters). I just don't think it fits the subdued tone a lot of the manga has.
Huh, I actually missed the side story volume. The raws are out so I guess I'll give it a read.
My Japanese is fairly entry-level, so I don‘t understand a lot of the plot. But I listen to this drama just to hear Kuro‘s voice. All the voices are pretty good.
So what did you guys think of the ending in general?
I got fairly emotional. I'm glad it stuck to being as fairy-tale as it could be.
I liked it. It feels like the stroy has been building towards this the entire time, you can see the seeds planted very early on. So the twists like Hifumi being Kuro‘s mother felt really satisfying because of that. What became of Nijuku and Sanju in the end also seemed fitting for the same reason. And it just felt very poetic overall, like a fairy-tale or a dream, like all of Kuro. Fairly melancholy and bitter-sweet, but ultimately still a good end. I cried.
I need those side stories though, can‘t get enough of our group of travelers getting into various little misadventures.
I've been meaning to read this but the last time I checked some of the volumes weren't in stock on amazon
Are they out of print or something?
It depends where you live, but both US and UK amazon have them in stock. I've been purchasing the volumes ever since they were getting released, so I wouldn't know for certain, but given how long its been publishing (Vol.1 came out over a decade ago) there may have been issues getting earlier copies in the past. Right now though, they're all in stock
For a while volume 2 was out of print and was impossible to find. They made more, though, around the time volume 6 came out.
I was looking on amazon DE
Book Depository has all of them so I'm just gonna grab them now
>$354
Fucking hell, I had something pretty valuable and had no idea
I doubt people were actually buying it at that price but you never know I guess
Man I love the character introduction pages. Everything in Kuro (and GA) is just so creative.
Speaking of characters, I like the fact that Kuro doesn't wear pitch black anymore.
I need her to work on games again.
Yeah you could see that at the end of the series as well. It is a really nice touch, and I like her new outfit.
So are some of the side stories set after the main story?
Half is after the ending, half is before. The first and last chapter are also not in 4-koma, and I kinda want to see her do a whole series like this now.
Man I really want to read it now. Shame I can‘t read moon yet, but luckily an English release is coming. Really gotta appreciate Yen Press for releasing this, I can‘t imagine the series to have sold very well.
I know she worked on Yggdra Union, what other games has she been on?
I'm ready!
I've been following GA since it first got localized. I put off finishing it as long as I could, and it was bittersweet to finally let them go. I'm stoked to see what she has in store for us next.
Here's hoping whatever it is will get translated in one way or another.
Nice I'm going to check that CD drama later at night. Is Kuro's VA the same one from Kirara Fantasia?
Different VA, this drama CD was released long time ago, probably around the time after GA anime came out.
It's crazy how different that is from her manga style.
I was wondering if Yen Press would publish that extra volume, can't wait to read it.
I started reading this thanks to some user that dumped the first two volumes years ago, was hunting for volume 2 for years before Yen Press decided to do a reprint, that thing went as high as $200.00 at some point.
Unblackened Kuro was a cutie.
CD got released in 2007, so several years before the GA anime even. Kuro's VA in the CD is Minami Takayama, she does a stellar job imo.
Also, Kuro being seasick while the twins are super excited about their boat trip will never not make me smile.
Is that even Kiyuzuki though?
I don't think she even worked on Knights in the Nightmare.
That's Tobe Sunaho, not Kiyuzuki.
>Kuro is a cutie
I'm sure you meant to write this, no need to thank me
Blessed thread.
There's a joke that it will be about a shota and an onee-san in one of the shop bonuses.
The 3 chapters that take place during the story are ones that didn't get included in the tanks due to page limits.
Did they release the new and final volume?
You mean in English? Vol 7 came out about two months ago. Side story volume coming this december.
>This is what they translated in French.
I don't understand French, what does it say?
Voyage = Journey/trip
Dunno about the one below.
>spoiler
Oh my
Kuro's journey
The story of a traveler
Or something along those lines
Bottom is just 懐中旅話 translated to french. A really terrible translation to english is pocketbook stories or less literal stories you bring with you during your travels. Pretty sure YP chose not to translate it.
She worked on all the Dept. Heaven games. They're all pretty weird, but not nessecarily bad. Knights in the Nightmare is my favourite of the other 3 (the other 2 being Yggdra Unison and Gungnir)
Pretty sure she wasn't around for Riveria. Union also had a couple of spinoffs or something.
>Pretty sure she wasn't around for Riveria
Honestly forgot about this game. You're right regardless, she didn't work on that one
Sounds interesting; I might pick this up later when I finish what I'm currently reading.
Man, I love this so much but always get sad whenever I read it
Took a pic of my favorite piece from this book. Yuru Camp Kuro.
Here lad. Fuck my shitty 3-in-1 is terrible but I suck at curves.
You're my hero.
Also if you want to have a giggle at my toaster being a piece of shit while trying to correct by eye. Kinda mad I gave up.
Wow that is struggling. My own scanner is pretty shit so I figured with better means and probably two copies.
I tried to scan the dust jacket back when it came out in Feb. with the only reference being a tiny crop from the samples out at the time. Gave up cus my scanner fucks up greens and blues but seeing them release that jpeg ridden twitter compressed version makes me mad. The fucked up chroma sampling on those delicious thighs is worse than anything my scanner could do to the original art.
>Dedicated Kuro thread
What a good day. She's adorable.
>I figured I'd leave it to someone with better means
Don't drink and type, kids.
She's marriage material.
Kuro is a handsome young man.
Is SenxKuro the endgame?
Sure, It might be interesting to see regular manga, but I'd rather have her embrace 4-koma restrictions and be even more creative with panelling.
I'll fight Sen.
>The first and last chapter are also not in 4-koma
That's probably because those chapters were published on Kirara Forward.
I'll make it a shoujo manga.
Forgot spoiler. It's only from the gaiden tho.
There's already a shoujo manga on Kirara recently.
Might as well post some actual spoilers before we slide off the catalog. Note that this comes from a store booklet where half the pages are made up of a rough comic; usually some gag. That and my jap isn't that good but they're obviously joking around on what her next work will be. There's a note at the end to check out Comic Fuz and that she'll be doing some sketches/illustrations for them. Probably tying in with Fuz 'publishing' Kuro/GA weekly.
Woops, keep forgetting.
Remind you that she got raped.
More likely that her curse would kick in if it went that far and it fits the witch's personality to meddle.
>Just finished reading it.
wait, it was finally translated? I read it years ago, but reach a point where no updates in years, so I lost track, it is on mangadex?
Mangasee has rips of the official volumes, or you can find rurika's rips.
thank you soo much good sir.
Other than designing one of the recurring characters, she apparently did the key visual for Kirara Fantasia. She also designed the kuromon monsters, which I assume include the stronger variations used in chapter 8 and in the GA+Kuro event.
Knights in the Nightmare is her departing from her usual style, it some good fucking work, I loved that game (and the whole depth heaven serie, shame they havent continued)
Not sure if she's in charge of conecpt art or general art direction but she has a pretty large role in the visuals.
I hate how the Union spin off never got localized, speically the on where you follow Gulcasa while he was conquering his own kingdom.
Is it over already?
It was more than a year ago user
