That's not what native isekai is.
Native isekai is anime/manga/LN that take place in a fantasy world and the MC is from that world, but the setting has RPG elements or the writing's self-aware that it's tropey fantasy.

By RPG elements I'm literally talking about using actual out-of-character real-world terms like Levels or having Guilds dish out quests to adventurers, and Ranks and Skills and systematically learning new spells or going as far to reference pen&paper and dice rolls. That's native Isekai.

Of all the early western isekai, I put forth that John Carter Warlord of Mars is the purest and most prototypical isekai.

John Carter is fundamentally different from current isekai, because the mars he went to wasn't a comfortable, predictable cliche.

Sure, it was a wish-fullfillment fantasy. But the wish it willed was for something NEW. Something strange and wonderful and different. It was yearning for discovery and adventure.

Current Isekai is the opposite. The standardized Dragon Quest fantasy that almost all isekai protagonists wind up in is deeply familiar and comforting to the readers. For many of those readers, grinding to high level in an RPG is the only time they've every felt a sense of power or accomplishment. It's their safe space. As a literary movement, it is, in a word, cowardly.

Personally, I'd differentiate between classic isekai where characters have adventures in another world from modern isekai where its just a self-wanking power fantasy in another world.
I know the japanese have a specific term for the latter, why doesn't the western fanbase have one?
