Also angel was ignoring satelites and was too far away for any weapon except for spear to reach him. And there's only one weapon with range, already used in 002. First of all no conventional weapons work on the Angels, not even nuclear weapons work. Without the Evas humans had nothing. And we witness the Evas get demolished several times in fights with the angels, they're extremely powerful. It was not easy in the slightest.

There were only a few pilots, and they had to synchronize with the Evas effectively. So it became a psychological battle more than anything else. Asuka was made useless, Shinji almost ran away. Rei was always really weak because she didn't have a strong psychology.

The only thing that's not 100% them is the adam clones, that was appropriated from the angels, using their own power against them in a big way. The fact is they didn't even have to 'defeat' humanity, they just had to break through some walls and touch a goal post, and all of them couldn't even do that, much less win against the human race as a whole. It was super unbalanced. As for weapons, what about the positron rifle? That did enormous damage to Ramiel, killing her on the second shot. You want to tell me the eva neutralized the AT field? What about the n2 bomb used on Sachiel? That was delivered by human technology alone and it did considerable, albeit not major, damage. Leliel could also be damaged this way, although it would have taken an insane amount of firepower; AT fields do not render angels immune to human weapons.

Virus angel got deleted by himself because in his extreme logic evolution he got killed byhuman abstract and emotional way of thinking. Humanity won because all of their trickshoots were stockpilled on single place and nearlly all fights were more or less close to 'Mission failed"

Note in a lot of the combat scenes, you hear stuff like "AT field to maximum" or "expand your AT field over a blah blah radius".
Eva's generate their own AT field that allows them to neutralize an angels and harm them with conventional weapons. However even then angels are very heavily protected and it takes a lot usually.
So why not have the EVAs concentrate on AT field neutralization and THEN fire the aforementioned shitload of guns?

Nah, even in the original series SEELE did not need it. Their plan's only genuine part was Adam's Lance of Longinus, using Eva-01 with its S2 and the MP-Evas as the only other pieces.
