This movie is a fucking mess, a blight in Miyazaki's filmography. Why isn't it criticized more?
This movie is a fucking mess, a blight in Miyazaki's filmography. Why isn't it criticized more?
Explain why it's a mess.
I liked it
What do you stand to gain from complaining about movies on an anonymous forum?
Even if you managed to have a debate with someone here and change their mind on what Ghibli movies are the best or worst (you won't), why would that matter anyways?
Do you think Miyazaki will read this thread and go "oh fuck he's right I'd better rethink how I make my next movie" or something?
Or perhaps you just get a little dopamine hit when people like me write replies because its the only time you get any attention.
I do not care for your negativity or your attention seeking behavior. Go read a book or something you gay faggot
I mean, it's not my favorite Miyazaki film, but it isn't bad.
This
It’s easily one of my favorite Miyazaki
Have sex.
Okay, bend over
>sister appears at the beginning and is never mentioned again
>mother appears out of nowhere in the middle in a role that should be meaningful but is instead entirely inconsequential and never mentioned again
>the scarecrow turns out to be this prince guy who was never mentioned before
>the war just sort of ends because the characters say whatever, fuck it
>Sophie destroys the castle for no reason other than forced drama
>the nature of the war is never established and seems entirely random, making it hard to take it and its consequences seriously
>random time travel that doesn't amount to anything
>Sophie and Howl hardly have consistent characterizations and just seem to flip flop between different archetypes at random
Just off the top of my head.
Criticism and discussion are enjoyable for their own sake, go "just turn your brain off and enjoy yourself dude lmao"
It does not follow the usuall story arc of hero(ine) going out to do story, so maybe that is bothering you.
Having the main character be the housekeeper/love interest was interesting to watch.
It was very comfy non the less.

and it's still a magnificent piece of art. sometimes avoiding explanations or just letting thing be without giving too many details adds to the atmosphere and stimulates the viewer imagination. This is something Ghibli has always been great at.
but yes, I can't really disagree that the storytelling is kind of messy, it's just that I don't care at all.
Hey OP care to point out a movie that you like?
Miyazaki is shit btw but his movies are good
Moving castle is only topped by nausica and mononoke
I liked it
All I remember is anime bacon, feathers and a curmudgeon curse.
maybe even topped by porco rosso, castle in the sky, spirited away, arrietty and ponyo
but thats it
I want to say the book filled in some of the holes, but it's been about eleven years since I read it.
>Sophie and Howl hardly have consistent characterizations and just seem to flip flop between different archetypes at random
I don't care about you being a pedantic piece of shit in what is essentially a fairy tale but this is straight untrue. Their characterization is very consistent and they both go through their own development.
It's not, though. For example, Howl seems to be 3 different characters depending on the scene: dazzling bishonen, tragic hero and whiny manbaby, and it never feels like those 3 sides of him come together to form a coherent and believable character (which it could, but it never does). As for Sophie, her initial serious and reserved demeanor instantly falls apart when she turns into an old lady, and starts endlessly spouting a bunch of sarcastic and tongue in cheek comments about everything and everyone. The work of characterization is so sloppy that you'd hardly believe that it's a Miyazaki movie. I can only blame it, together with the mess of the rest of the script, on the Hosoda walking away situation.
What was Hosoda’s original vision for the movie?
I think he had to sign an agreement about not disclosing anything that happened.
I didn't really like it even tho i enjoyed the other miyazaki movies.
When will they LEARN
>the scarecrow turns out to be this prince guy who was never mentioned before
>the war just sort of ends because the characters say whatever, fuck it
and it's not even answers-on-the-silver-platter-stuff, the absence of the prince as being the reason for basically the whole movie isn't mentioned ever, lol.
at least the visuals are nice.
It's literally a fairy tale. Whats not to understand?
Dilate
It gets a free pass because of the great animation quality, but yeah the movie was not good at every else. Hosoda was suppose to direct the film but left and Miyazaki took role of the director.
I once found a listing of storyboards of it on mandarake, I might have the thumbnails somewhere.
It had cars and a modern street.
Be loved
>Howl seems to be 3 different characters depending on the scene: dazzling bishonen, tragic hero and whiny manbaby
He is a dazzling bishonen who becomes a giant whiny manbaby when he is rejected or something goes not as he was planning who secretly harbours a bunch of insecurities and fears about his own past, who matures into being a man ready to protect his family thanks to his relationships with Sophie and being forced to confront his own fears. There's literally no problems with his characterization and it's far by one of the best depictions of a young gigolo burning his life away i've seen in anime.
>As for Sophie, her initial serious and reserved demeanor instantly falls apart when she turns into an old lady, and starts endlessly spouting a bunch of sarcastic and tongue in cheek comments about everything and everyone
Sophie merely assumes a form that mentally suits her which removes all mental restrains she had in the beginning of the movie. She is quite literally an old-fashioned, passive and reserved girl who finds her own youth through becoming a grandma and progressively becoming a more active individual who has people she cares about.
howls easily has one of the best female protags purely for how likeable and modivated she is. id say shes easily above spirited aways protag dispite that movie doing so much better
>tfw no gf like her
>being that much of a plot fag
But as I said, the sides of him feel too compartmentalized, it never feels like a believable character who is the sum of those traits. He simply lacks nuance, little traits and mannerisms of each sides should have bled into the others, and the transitions not be so abrupt, but that wasn't the case.
And Sophie has a similar problem, lack of gradual progression. She's already cracking grandma jokes when she's climbing the hill in search of Howl, it's simply not natural and immersion breaking.
The character interactions and the depiction of the world are charming enough to overcome a messy adaptation. It's an example of his production/boarding schedule overlap biting him in the ass, as it seemed to more and more as he aged. It's his worst film, but like Ponyo it's also one of his most inviting and pleasant to watch. Fun set-pieces, iconic scenes, and a unique atmosphere makes up for a lot, and for most people it's enough to watch it repeatedly.
It's worth mentioning that he only did it because Hosoda's was apparently embarassing, which I can believe. His boards raise a lot of red flags for me. You can really tell the difference in Miyazaki's work when it's out of pure passion (totoro, chihrio) vs frustration (kiki, howl)
I'm saving this.
>Why isn't it criticized more?
Because its unironically Giblis masterpiece you fucking mongrel, fuck Spirited Away
The difference is that Ponyo doesn't even attempt to have a standard plot progression, it entirely works on child logic, and in my opinion it succeeds at it.
>movie
>expecting it to have any depth
kiki is better than all of these
>the scarecrow turns out to be this prince guy who was never mentioned before
>the war just sort of ends because the characters say whatever, fuck it
>Sophie destroys the castle for no reason other than forced drama
Fucking speedwatcher, go watch the movie again, everything is explained
All of that is correct. The castle thing is especially dumb and pointless, since she was told before that without Calcifer the castle would be destroyed, but she brings it out anyway, the castle falls apart, so she's like Oh Shit and immediately brings him in again. Fucking retarded.
I loved, it was my favorite movie. I remember waking up at 7 on saturdays because there was a slight chance it was on tv.
A few years later I read the book, and all the inconsistencies stand out so much. It is an entertaining movie, but a terrible adaptation.
Because it's just a quick entertainment piece anyone from any walk of life can enjoy without thinking too deeply about it, like all of Miyazaki's works. It's good, stop bitching over nothing.
...
>This movie is a fucking mess
Yeah I felt the same, it's just things happen.
It looks great at least.
She kisses Howl, Calcifer, AND Turnip Head all in the same movie.
Scandalous!
Also, Turnip Head is my biggest gripe with this film. HAHA I am not a Turnip Head at all! I am actually Prince-never-mentioned who can stop this war. Circle gets the square goodnight everyone!
didn't she do that because Sulliman was looking for the castle itself? She had to destroy the castle and essentially "rebuild" it from the ground up so it's technically not the same castle
>and then she 'died'
I don't get it
unironically based
I'm pretty sure it's mentioned at some point that the prince was missing
My favorite Miyazaki antagonist
One of the more likeable ones. Movie wise pic related is mine.
was she even that much of an antagonist, the only thing she did is pester howl to join the army.
>blight
Bale stole the show m8
>Hating on Howl when Earthsea exists.
Unironically my favourite Miyazaki film with Lupita.
Did anyone else go see pic related?
>plot doesn't make sense
>hey at least the visuals are good
You guys described most of Ghibli movies.
People always hand waive Howl's by saying "troubled production" when things like Toy Story 2 almost kill small children they go so far off the rails and end up masterpieces.
Miyazaki wasn't interested in fixing the film and he band-aided it. It shows. That's all.
Jack Nicholson repeatedly kicked and knocked the little kid in the Shining off his bike to make him more afraid during confrontation scenes. It all worked out in the end.
I found it the most boring of his films.
Was still good though. Even bad miyazaki is god tier.
>Toy Story 2 almost kill small children
what
Animator was so sleep deprived from round the clock overtime he forgot he had his kid in the car. When he remembered 4 hours later the kid was unconscious from heat stroke. Paramedics saved it.
Toward the beginning, yes. When the war itself is first mentioned.
satan trips confirm
This, post-Spirited Away Miyazaki went downhill.
That's fucked if true.
I like it
Idk man the movie might have some inconsistencies but it works emotionally. It could be a mess but I was too busy enjoying the movie to notice it
I always adored the moving house concept, it touches all my good spots. It's like when you get the airship in Final Fantasy.
a true masterpiece coming through
HOLY FUCKING BASED
It's a fucking movie for children you idiot. Don't reflect your 30 years of loneliness and weebness on something that isn't meant for you
Holy shit, better than have sex

It's true. Article is sourced.
Toy Story 2 had a system failure that resulted in a loss of work. It was nearly the entire movie but one of the films staff had backed some things up so she could work at home and that saved them some trouble. They also struggled with writing and finding a plot. The entire production was just a total fucking mess but it came together in the end since everyone pushed themselves so hard.
I always thought Howl's Moving Castle was really fucking boring. It's pretty to look at and visually stunning but the movie itself feels really shallow. Ponyo was way better in every way and it deserves more respect.
You're complaining about a post right now, you dumb faggot.
You watch Howl for the visuals, you damn queer.
J-jesus Christ man, you didn't have to be so mean to the guy
That kid is lucky to be alive. That's becoming an unfortunately common thing.
Read the book faggot
