Pretty sure it's a vocal minority. Most of his works cater to the lowest common denominator, read: the average Yea Forumsnon. Panty and Stockings, Luluco, MACHSPEED and Dead Leaves are so unfunny, it's hard to take anyone who likes them seriously. Should have stuck to being an animator and episode director. That's what he's good at. Exceptional, in fact. He can direct if he tries to, but he needs someone who contains his toddler humor. Never allow him to be chief director. Merely invite him to work on a project and have someone else be in charge. That's how you bring his talent to fruition and make him shine.

I like Imaishi when he's kept in check and works purely as an animator.
When he is in this specific environment, he's amazing, just take a look at his work for some of the old movies he worked in like Lupin's Walther P38 movie.
The problem is when Imaishi gets carte blanche, he's an awful fucking director and even a worse writer, his style also got real bland in the last two decades or so and while I do appreciate his more explicitly tongue in cheek stuff like Dead Leaves, it gets old real fast.

He's surely one of the most talented animators of his generation though, that much is certain.

I don't find those messages sincere at all. It's not something that can be argued. Either you see it or you don't. KLK, Luluco, Inferno Cop, Franxx, second cour of LWA, you name it - the cynicism is nauseating. The LWA OVAs are the only exception that truly felt like an honest attempt at making a fun anime without pretense.
