For most of the story, Furuta is just a witness/bystander to what the big players (Nobunaga, Mitsuhide, Hideyoshi, Ieyasu) do. Hell, there are episodes where he doesn't appear and the focus is entirely on them. The only reason that he is the main character is that he was one of the few historical courtiers to serve all three and not fuck it up and thus serves as an interesting if different viewpoint character. And it's funny as fuck.

Real life Kochou (AKA Nōhime) was infertile so Nobunaga had to rely on his concubine Kitsuno (see here ) to have children. The anime is explaining Kochou's infertility by making her a man.
It seems that IRL Kochou and Nobubaga's relationship was a political gesture, with little actual love between them. Though she was his official wife, it is often believed that he focused his love on his concubine, Kitsuno (the girl from the first episode).
Of course I expect the anime to go the BL route and Nobunaga will have feelings for the trap, leaving Kitsuno as his side womb for having kids.
