Well, looks like the retirement arc is going to end soon. What did you guys think of it?
Hajime no Ippo
>dude jab lmao
trash, Kumi better burn the gym down
I don't understand why things keep happening.
>Well, looks like the retirement arc is going to end soon. What did you guys think of it?
Worth it, just for the Bitch Slap and Ippo being forced to think for himself. It's a shame that Kamogawa isn't getting blamed for encouraging Ippo to block punches with his face,
The only real question is how many people Kumi is going to murder, once Big Mara builds up enough confidence to tell her that he's going to box again.
It was so-so. The entire idea that he was punch drunk was flawed from the outset.
>What? You can't throw consecutive full swings from every direction while balancing on one toe? YOU'RE FUCKING BRAIN DAMAGED KID!
She should get told off for being a selfish bitch that wanted Ippo to abandon his dreams and his only interest in life over an unsubstantiated rumor because she was afraid that she'd have to end up taking care of Mashiba AND him even though that's just a complex she has.
There's almost 1300 chapters and she still doesn't understand anything about why either of them like to box and she'd rather they both gave it up for her sake. Worst girl of all time.
gotta wonder if the reader numbers for this manga ever recovered after that devastatingly bad loss for Ippo
Pussy ass author he should've retired Ippo so that the lesson would be hard learned.
I’m still reading it for the hillariously bad writing. “You did it kid! You learned to use both arms!!!!”
>unsubstantiated rumor
fuck off kamogawa
It's bullshit, the only signs he ever showed were when he tried to draw the DAY after getting his ass beaten while his face was swelled up like a balloon. There's no indication he has long-term damage, and tons of other boxers have been fighting way longer than him without showing any signs either.
And it's not as if they were married with kids or something. They didn't even kiss, hold hands or told each other they were in love with the other as far as I remember.
If something happens to Ippo it's his mother's responsibility, not hers. We'll see how things unfold, but I wish her desire to see him stop boxing comes from an honest concern about his well-being instead of her unable to let go of her fears.
>It's a shame that Kamogawa isn't getting blamed for encouraging Ippo to block punches with his face
It's hilarious that Yea Forums basically posted about exactly the issue Ippo realized here years ago already, except we blamed Kamogawa for it (which is appropriate).
The collective delusion about Coach being a smart and good guy is fucking insane in this manga.
I'm gonna miss Ippo calvo, bros.
What was the point?
>when your embittered never-was mentor lives vicariously off your capacity to eat punches to the face and remain conscious
>when your co-dependent personality makes you cognitive dissonance poor, outdated training methods and a vacuum of game plan into a spartan regime focused on fighting spirit
Seriously tho. What the fuck was the point of this arc. Other than make readers lose interest.
Ippo will continue to be a worthless gimp until he crosses that goddamn line, but he never will. Kamogawa's influence is too strong.
Ippo still hasn't worked the issue into his fat head. He still doesn't think he should actually try dodging or blocking without using his face as a shield, he thinks the issue is that he needs to jab more while his opponent is on the offensive.
And coaches advice to that was "No man, you gotta keep trying the dempsey roll, it hasn't worked on anyone since you stopped fighting Japanese boxers but it worked in some of your early matches and it tickles the junk of my samurai soul so you need to keep using it".
This thread is making me see Coach is a bad coach and it's like finding out Santa Claus isnt real.
I am burn out
I don't even know why I keep reading this shit
You should have seen the threads after Ippo lost to Gonzales, people really exposed the faggot for the monster that he is. Not just is his teaching shit, he manipulates and emotionally blackmails Ippo at every opportunity, it's actually pretty insane once you take the dualexchangepill.
First time in an Ippo thread? Because we've been talking about how godawful of a coach and person he is if you actually take a close look at him for years.
Look at this shit, this post is from 2017. We all knew.
Yeah, I think the only time I've come by here before is when people thought the manga was ending.
>Ippo would keep being a retard
>He would keep dashing forwards and blocking punches with his face
>Kamogawa would continue brainwashing the idiot into pushing forward at the risk of his own health
>The whole series would keep getting stuck into an eternal "Groundhog day" in the late 80s
Kamogawa, why?
So long as Ippo doesnt start punching the log into the hill side, then its okay.
Didn't realise the photo was so big.
>So long as Ippo doesnt start punching the log into the hill side, then its okay.
Didn't he start buying logs and doing exactly that at the riverside like a good while ago after hearing coaches story?
iirc Ippo and Coach both had the same idea independent of each other, except Ippo swung a hammer while Coach tried to break his hands
>if the reader numbers for this manga ever recovered
How do we keep track in the first place?
>the jabbing
This shit's too on the nose. Morikawa has to be looping around to eventually reveal the coach to be an idiot, r-right?
In this chapter he says he was stupid for trying to just slip punches rather than controlling the match himself.
Emotionally manipulates how?
Kamogawa is Morikawa's self insert so he probably thinks the sadistic old man is cool
I dropped it when he tried to go to prison.
You've missed out.
>tfw chart will never be updated and we won't even get post 7 years killing Aoki
Also anyone like how Ricardo's poster kept popping up in the panels? It's like subtly telling you Takamura is no longer the #1 pound for pound in the story.
Kek
look painfull
I seriously hope Takamura loses his fucking eye in a match and is KOed in the heavyweight division.
Still cracks me up that the style Ippo would eventually start using is almost literally the "Homer style", a style where the whole joke is that its stupid, self destructive, and doesn't work against real boxers.
>pic
This will never fail to make me laugh.
>Anons spend like 2 years joking about 4th dimension dempsey roll.
>Ippo really did it.
The way Ippo uses those wrist weights forget about brain damage, his joints must be fucking powder.
That's not even close to how it was presented, the worry sprang from a few repeating incidents that are textbook warning signs of being punch drunk:
>Ippo was losing his balance and taking downs after getting hit in the head with blows not even a quarter as strong as he's took before and remained standing for
>Ippo was not moving well in matches, often stepping in sluggishly and throwing punches with nothing behind them seemingly at random
>Ippo was demonstrating memory loss after matches, not being able to recall the aforementioned incidents
>Ippo is implied to not actually be able to draw straight lines naturally, he goes crazy with concentration when checking to see if he can do it, never once tries doing it like he did when working as an assistant
The fact that he was never able to use the new dempsey roll had more to do with him being able to set it up properly in a match thanks to the symptoms he was presenting, not that him being unable to use the new dempsey roll meant he had to be brain damaged.
How long has he had them on?
I remember him getting the idea from Sendo, but it feels like its been a really long time at this point.
Kamogawa is literally a cult leader.
>This thread
Jesus christ.
>Realizing this late in the game
I still think the reason he keeps only accepting fights for ippo at the same couple tiny ass Japanese areas is because he doesn't want to see how much better other boxers are treated.
To my surprise the outside world still falls for the "Kamogawa is a good coach/person" meme.
Like at least a year, the guy shouldnt be able to throw a punch
I rember the thread where over on 2chan they got ahold of some of our screencaps/edits and started seriously discussing coach.
When was this? What magic keywords do I search on fireden to find the thread to see 2chan's reactions?
>HERE OM THE KAMOGAWA GYM WE DONT MESS WITH OUR BOXERS, WE JUST SIT IN THE CORNER AND HOPE THEY FIGURE IT OUT STUFF THEMSELVES, IF THE KID GETS BRAIN DAMAGE IS A RISK WE ARE WILLING TO TAKE.
This is why Joe will go down as a better manga: he knew when to stop.
>He knew when to stop
When he was dead?
same, this sounds incredible.
This shit is so on the nose I don't understand.
If you can WRITE a character thinking this, you must have thought it yourself. Then what's the reason why there are no consequences?
Also, I'll never get over when Takamura struggled with Bison, and coach had garbage advice to "try it yourself."
Iirc it was like half a year ago. Someone linked to a thread where stuff like was being posted and translated. I have no idea what search words to use to find it anymore.
I meant that as "story knew when to end", but my brain don't work good so I used he instead of it.
Also, there's a debate about whether he's dead or not and mangaka's artist once drew a picture where Yoko takes care of him presumably as punch drunk as Carlos. I think it was meant to be real ending at some point but they probably decided on a more ambiguous ending to imply he's dead.
But although there's some truth to them, the pictures are intended to be a joke as well. It would be nice if they showed screencaps like instead, with serious discussion going on.
I dunno about you guys but I never saw this manga as something to teach me boxing even on a basic level. It's just crafted to tug at your emotions, whether it's the thrill or the frustration or the laughter, Ippo usually made you feel something one way or another.
If I wanted to see strategy, tactics, coaching, management, getting really into the 'meta' so to speak, I think boxing doesn't really have any manga at the moment to do that. Joe is wanked all the time but it's just as silly and ridiculous, and ironically enough it's also loved for the same reasons Ippo is loved, it moves the heart, not the mind.
At best you'd have to pick some MMA manga to get your fill of technical armchair wizardry, but even then it's very basic. On the other hand manga like One Outs, Last Inning, and especially Giant Killing really goes into the POV of being the coach, how to manipulate and battle on a grand scale instead of just being a player who is focused on one match at a time. I cannot fathom anyone being able to tell a boxing story with the same level of flair as Giant Killing if it ever centered on the coach and not the boxer.
So just enjoy it for what it is.
>tfw missed legendary thread
>wow jabs are important!
This is the guy who was the champion of Asia.
He was never OBPF champion user.
Punch drunk people arent this lobotomized cute kids, they are mostly violent and also die pretty fucking quick after getting punch drumk.
When are we gonna stop pretending that the coach is good? All those things Ippo realized were things that the boxer was not supposed to figure out by himself. If the coach was half decent he would have told Ippo a thousand chapters ago.
He did teach him those things, way at the start of the series. Then ever since Ippo moved beyond the Japan stage he for some reason began systematically having Ippo unlearn those things in favor of relying on getting in a good solid knockout punch.
I really don't know anything about real-life sports, so i just do enjoy sport manga for what it is. Sports is a cool and interesting setting for telling a story and if they going in-depth it's a cool thing too, but not essential for me.
Why does Ippo keeps fixating on his autism roll? He just got worse at boxing in general after focusing on it all the time.
>that time Kamogawa told Ippo to recover from a down by literally just throwing punches in every fucking direction at random
i bet kamogawa will become very sick and in the hospital, ippo will promise him that he will return to boxing as a fighter.. after kamogawa dies, he will get his championsship back and will say 'coach look at me' and the manga will end there
mark my words
He'll return to boxing once Gonzalez kills Sendo in the ring.
>Well, looks like the retirement arc is going to end soon. What did you guys think of it?
NO
Well, it was a nice setup to change his mentality I suppose?
Exactly
Does kamogawa gym even have members besides main gang?
Kumi is such shit.
>Kumi is going to murder
YES
>the retirement arc is going to end
Not if I have anything to do with it.
Kamogawa exploits Ippo's lack of father figure to get him to act the way he wants and fulfill his own failed dream, to become champion. And it's downright cruel. Look up the character traits that manipulators exploit and you'll see it's 1:1 Ippo.
Ippo lives vicariously through Kamogawa's desires. There is nothing he wants except to please him. And Kamogawa constantly reinforces this by throwing a hissy fit whenever Ippo does anything to displease him. Even the slightest mistake instantly gets lashed out on.
This is EXACTLY what cult leader types do, they don't tolerate the slightest deviation from mindless obedience and will punish it and constantly remind the victim that they did something REALLY BAD and should feel REALLY BAD for what he did. Kamogawa is aware that his approval and "love" is what Ippo wants most, which is why his first instinct is always to withhold it as punishment, such as by not talking to him. He doesn't just punish aimlessly, he does so with the precise message of "you've disappointed me kid, so I, your surrogate father figure, am leaving. I'm leaving you alone and it's all your fault because you didn't do what you should have done (read:what I wanted)." This is exactly what they did to him during the time Ippo considered quitting, they instantly threatened to kick him out of the gym.
And look at what happened after he lost to Gonzales. Did Kamogawa, despite explicitly being warned of this great disaster by Miguel and ignoring that warning, ever blame himself for Ippo's loss? Did he ever have serious self-doubts about his kamikaze style of boxing potentially ruining his own boxer? No. What did Kamogawa do instead, when Ippo returned? He asked him: "Why did you lose?" In other words: What did YOU do wrong?
Fucking insane. And after nearly a decade of abuse, Ippo has come to actively crave the nagging and criticism because to Ippo, NOT criticizing him he equates with "not caring about him", and that's the thing he fears the most.
They've been seen occasionally, but less and less as time goes on. I think they're mostly just gym-goers and not pro boxers.
Did you say something you little shit?
His boxing career is over.
Don't you come in here giving him ideas you sunuvabitch
She won't though cause Japanese 'HUMOR' with 'Muh scury womenz'.
Nobody ever calls Chi-Chi out for risking Billion of people's lives for her selfish wants
Sakura never got called out until Sai said something and even then it was ONLY her ignorance of how serious Naruto took his promise to her, never how much of a bitch she was, how selfish she was or how disgustingly obsessed with Sauske she was.
And so on and so forth.
Kumi will be no different, the possible only person she'd listen to doesn't give a shit, and the only person who can convince HIM gives even less shits and probably wants Ippo to stop boxing EVEN more than Kumi because he's a jealous manchild who wants all the attention
Does Ippo even like boxing, or is he just desperate for approval? It's been said many times that he mainly boxes to live up to other's expectations of him.
Coach told him it was the coolest thing ever after seeing him use it and both got boners from it.
Maybe all those memory lapses were just a psychological mechanism to protect him from having to acknowledge when he fucked up and "let the coach down".
You tryin' to start something? You can report my fist in your face you whore.
He considered quitting after Miyata cancel because he felt it was all meaningless but Kamogawa manipulated and emotionally blackmailed him into continuing, quite literally just to please Kamogawa.
If you look at how Ippo thinks about boxing, there isn't really anything he likes about it except to do what Kamogawa taught him "successfully". That's it. He doesn't care about proving himself, he doesn't even care about winning really, all he wants is to just execute Kamogawa's will. He's literally a proxy, a robotic solider for Kamogawa.
Sadly even if 2chan came to same realization we did, which who knows if they did, it wouldn't really matter.
2chan probably represents Japan less than Yea Forums represents the US, UK, Europe and all the other lesser western nations.
So it's not like even if they got up in arms realizing Coach is abjectly shit that their voices would be heard.
punch drunk people are crazy, Jermaine Taylor is a modern case of this. Dude was a gold medalist and chill cat, then got wrecked by Kelly Pavlik twice and Carl Froch, two heavy handed guys who did irreparable brain damage to him imo. Taylor now goes around threatening to shoot his own family members and is in jail now.
What dreams? Ippo doesn't even like boxing.
I remember that one time Ippo got the drive by himself after Date got his ass beat by Martinez. You know, the baton touch thing. Guess it went to the toilet.
Ippo dropped it because Date reached for Ippo's left
That was just him trying to live up to Date though.
The worst thing is that he created the Depsey Roll on his own after his loss, but later on Kamogawa basically co-opted it into being his technique by trying to get Ippo to do all that ridiculous 720 balancing shit.
Can't wait for Sendo killing Martinez and leaving his wife a widow and children orphans
Sendo is going to get Joe'd dude.
>Ippo back from retirement after training to create his new infinite phantom dempsey roll.
>Match starts
>"Show them your new technique boy!"
>Ippo just starts spinning around with his arms outstretched like a helicopter.
>Coaches thoughts: 'Its complete, with this new form the dempsey roll is unstoppable! The boy is nothing but punches now. Truly this is the true form of boxing.
That's disappointing. I stopped reading after Woli's fight, but ending the manga here sounded like a great idea. Using a decades long shounen manga as a warning against the dangers of brain injuries, and of giving full control over your life to a stranger who doesn't care about your well-being, would have been a powerful ending to rival that of Ashita no Joe. Having all this be for nothing is actually disgusting and makes me not want anything to do with the franchise ever again.
When's Kumi finally going to find herself a husband? She's going to regret wasting her youth like this when she hits the wall.
This. Has Morikawa gone senile? It feels like nothing matters in this manga.
He doesnt. He only wants to make the coach happy, like Takamura
He's going to write Ippo for the rest of his life and you're going to like it.
Frankly, I don't mind it all that much as long as the side characters stay interesting (their fights are still kino). I never gave a big shit about Ippo, I actually cheered for his losses because fuck him and fuck Kamogawa.
I think they will have a fight even to the point of breaking up. The event will somehow break her, which will be used as a key plot for the 2nd Mashiba fight.
You have to be together before you break up user.
>because she was afraid that she'd have to end up taking care of Mashiba AND him even though that's just a complex she has.
Are you certain that it's that and not the fact that continuing could potentially cause permanent brain damage to someone she cares about?
I can't really tell if the author is just writing this shit because it sounds cool as a manga idea or if his dumb ass actually thinks this makes good training.
Yes, the idea of him being punch drunk is just a specter of a worry.
Maybe if she didn't hate Boxing since her conception that would work.
But she's literally acted like Boxing is The Satan's Sport all the time.
Her feelings about the sport don't invalidate the very real concern that he was showing symptoms of brain damage, coupled along with the fact that he'd mindlessly tank punches to the head because it was easier than dodging. She IS being a little too overbearing but her concern isn't unfounded upon or even unfair.
He's co-owner of an actual boxing gym so for the sake of sanity I'm going to go with 'its a cool manga idea'
I remember that one time Ippo got angry and motivated and knocked out some guy with 1 punch at the start of round 1 and then the coach went around saying he fucked up because he didn't box the way he taught him.
>a little too overbearing
I am fairly certain she is actually going to stab someone at the gym.
You gotta remember the timeline in which the story takes place. If George makes the characters too competent it makes no sense. Bill, Ricardo's trainer is the guy who should be cutting edge, but everyone else like Kamogawa should be way the fuck behind in methods and shit.
Every time the coach isn't actively around Ippo preferms above and beyond expectations. Its really insane from an outside perspective, Ippo objectively does WORSE when Kamogawa is actively involved.
That entire arc with the round 1 knockout was a total mess. The whole theme of that arc and fight was that Ippo was letting his anger over his opponents shit talking get to him and he was going to fuck up, but he punched the guy out in one hit. Followed by the coach berating him for giving into his anger even though the arc shows it had only positive influence on his fights. And then to make it even worse we were shown his opponent actually had legitimate reasons for really needing to win the fight and for trying to get Ippo worked up he was that desperate for a win. Then it later shows he got punch so hard he went nuts and turned into a homeless beggar while Ippo was hunky dory.
Really, hat the fuck was up with that whole arc? What was the purpose? Don't trash talk the authors self insert or you'll get your shit pushed in?
>Be coach/manager
>Have to find people to set up matches for your students/clients
>People have to come pay to watch your student/client fight
>Student/client knocks the guy out in one punch
>Fewer people to set up matches
>Fewer people buying tickets to your slaughterfests
>Less money coming into your gym
Against the Korean faggot before the Takamura/Hawk match, Ippo went and did a Dempsey Right away. That one was retarded
Dont you know the brain is a muscle? The more you damage it the better and stronger is becomes.
>Then it later shows he got punch so hard he went nuts and turned into a homeless beggar while Ippo was hunky dory.
What?
Dude, the stafiums ippo fight in are tiny as fuck and the matches pay fucking pennies compared to a lot of other countries. The gymn is not directly relying on those matches for income, especially as even with all their fighters combined they only have a few matches a year.
Should Ippo have just rolled over because of the dude's sob story? People box professionally because of the money, it is literally their jobs. Volg had to fuck off back to Russia because he was underperforming, why's this korean guy that got knocked out in one hit so special?
Those stadiums were always packed, even before Ippo became the featherweight champion.
Thats not what I'm saying at all, just that in terms of tone it was a mess. George made the guy out to be an ass and Ippo was making a mistake letting himself get so pissed off at him, but then the guy is shown to not actually be all that bad only for him to get slaughtered in the match and Ippo had no trouble at all.
>Kumi is the Frank Grimes of Ippo
Sasuga Morikawa
The stadiums are also fairly small for their purpose. They don't have nearly as many seats as some of the stadiums in the foreign matches. And again, the actual fights at them pay pennies. Why do you think Kamogawa had so much trouble getting opponents for Ippo once he started fighting boxers from outside Japan? It wasn't worth it for most of them to fly into Japan for the match.
>He's going to write Ippo for the rest of his life
Not that user, but this has always been George's aim the moment Hajime no Ippo became a hit. The guy literally planned to become a salaryman to support his family if Hajime no Ippo failed, like like previous manga series he's worked on.
what did he mean by this?
and this
>The Heart
and this
I enjoy Ippo threads, where all the anons have clearly grown tired of the story so they just generalize everything to the coach making outlandish requests of Ippo as a form of summarizing an arc.
>>What? You can't throw consecutive full swings from every direction while balancing on one toe? YOU'RE FUCKING BRAIN DAMAGED KID!
Ippo isn't a character. Ippo is a human piñata that no one has managed to crack yet.
>Volg's look
there's no way this series doesn't end in tragedy. IMO I think he's right up against the punch-drunk line. But the problem is that once you cross over there's no going back.
Did you miss the part where he almost died?
What happened to Ippo Calvo?
KUBOOOOOOO
Ippo and Kamogawa were always shit and the least interesting part of the story, but it was fine to a degree because everyone expected this to be a story of personal growth: the shy and cowardly Ippo slowly maturing and gaining confidence thanks to boxing. But the truth is he hasn't progressed at all, and each year it becomes more obnoxious, like a teenager who never stopped pissing the bed or making poop jokes. He's still a pussy outside of the ring and a retard inside of it. The only thing going for him is his inexplicable strength, and he already had that from day one. Like with every retarded kid, there comes a time when you stop rooting for him and start resenting him for being such a failure. Ippo is the kind of son you can't wait to kick out of your house and forget about.
>like a teenager who never stopped pissing the bed or making poop jokes.
if the child isn't mentally disabled, those things are usually to the fault of emotional abuse/neglect, and often attributed to very strict/cold parents.
With Ippo it's probably both.
>Ippo is the kind of son you can't wait to kick out of your house and forget about.
no parent should ever have that kind of thought run through their mind. it's literally your responsibility to care for and nurture your child, if at any point you anticipate for the day your kid turns 18 so you can kick them out then you either failed as a parent or you should have never become one in the first place.
This, Ippo just disgusts me now as a character.
I got tired of his attitude a long fucking time ago, as said before his entire existence as a boxer basically amounts to "I want to appease coach".
He's so empty and soulless, he has no fucking drive.
Interestingly enough the story actually kind of acknowledges this and kind of shit on him for it. The problem is, we all know nothing's gonna change, he'll never be that kind of "monster" with inhuman eyes. If there's ever a moment where he passes the line Takamura drew or gain super determination, it's going to happen through his own cheesy version of it, which will probably just be "lol more trust in coach!"
Does this confirm Sendo's punches are stronger than Ippo's?
why couldnt sendo be the mc
this thread makes me want to read ippo just to join on kamogawa shit wagon but reading 1200+ chapters is too much
Just watching anime and reading synopsis is enough to understand what's going on.
when are we getting another anime?
>Ippos face is literally the best defense.
The mangaka doesn't have a fucking boxing consultant?! No wonder this manga's all sorts of fucked up.
I haven't read a single chapter of Ippo, so if I sound shocked, it's because I assumed the writer had a consultant. Normally with long running manga centered around such technical sports, I'd assume it was good because it was at least semi-realistic, and not as retarded as the back-end of SnS.
When will Ippo beat up Mexicans again?
he probably watched a lot of old rocky films or old boxing films in general. like that one about boxing in prison
He literally owns a boxing gym you autists
I didnt know that
I can help you read Hajime! no Ippo
>Ippo is a teen with hidden strength
>He discovers it via a boxer, Takamura Mamoru, who impresses him
>Kamogawa Gym is where he enrolls to explore this hidden strength
>Head Coach Kamogawa tells him: Makunouchi Ippo is a Japanese featherweight (less than 60kg/126lbs) keep in mind
>HIT HARD YOU IDIOT
>OKAY COACH
>YOU GOT HIT, DON'T
>OKAY COACH
Repeat above every match ever
>FINALLY YOU HIT HARD, BUT NEXT TIME, HIT HARDER
>OKAY COACH
>Ippo "has developed a deep trust with his father figure Coach Kamogawa"
You've now read 1200+ chapters.
Does he train people as badly as Coach?
You forgot the jokes where Ippo has an elephant penis stapled to his crotch.
miss volg, the last time we saw him as takamura talking about the guys at the top
Here, even easier and up-to-date
>IPPO, PUNCH AN OPPONENT UNTIL THE MATCH ENDS, NO MATTER WHAT
>THAT HURT, BUT NOW I'M BETTER, LET'S HAVE ANOTHER MATCH
what about kumi and takamura?
Okay I actually went and read the chapter
There is NO WAY he's punch drunk. He drew better human model than I could and I don't have (serious) brain damage
It was okay, but the coach STILL hasn't been called on his bullshit and Ippo is still worshipping his dumbass.
trying to save your lover from an assholw coach isn't a bad thing you know
>Kumi
Girl who shows up every 100 chapters and then does nothing until some recent chapters where she acts possessive but still does nothing.
This series doesn't have any oxygen left in its muscles and the YAMATO DAMASHIIII ran out of steam 15 years ago
I always wanted this boxing manga to be about Takamura. An actual boxer of actual size with actual talent and an actual ego who is fun to watch, actually winning with an actual goal in mind, and that goal associated with boxing.
Not the "try-hard" Ippo who trains:
75 chapters always reaching the conclusion
>Of course! Learn this basic boxing technique!!
23 chapters in the fight, losing
>Why isn't my poor application of this basic boxing technique I just learned working?!
1 chapter of a OHKO
>Fuck my training! I'll use my emotions and "spirit" and just hit the other guy really hard! I'm a featherweight!
1 chapter of discovering there's more
>You mean I should be better??? Coach Kamogawa, train me some more!!!
repeat 13 times
He has feints towards realism moments, but it's still very much a gag manga based around boxing.
Kumi likes Ippo but doesn't support his hobbies-turned-career. That has never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever changed. At best, the artist took initiative to post "angry-looking-Kumi" for reaction images.
Takamura continues to win what he sets out to do, and it will get easier for him since he won't be emaciating himself to fit the low-end weight classes. He can actually eat more and stay energetic.
>Date baton pass
>Ippo spends the next 5 years dicking around the pacific with Wolly, Gedo, etc
>forgets all about Martinez
God the pacific shit was the absolute worst, so goddamn pointless.
Sendo is the hardest punching featherweight in the world.
The way the series is handled is fine, since it revolved around Ippo but gives a healthy amount of focus to all characters. A series centered around Takamura wouldn't be as good since he's a strong character, but best done in a secondary role -- his fights have little to no tension and the way he acts (while enjoyable) would get old after a while if it were in the spotlight.
>since it revolved around Ippo
Did you forget 300 chapters of Hajime No Itagaki?
I just never liked how much for decades now Ippo was praised for how strong he was. Of the 8 original weight classes, he's in the bottom #3 lightest divisions.
There are 17 boxing weight classes now. Seventeen. Why? The sport went global, and as a result it needed to define (restrict) more weight classes. Why? Because no one in Japan was a fucking heavyweight, those manlets. Asians were getting their ASSES kicked as weight increased. They couldn't compare to the taller, stronger fighters; they couldn't reach and they couldn't tank the hits. It was (is) a slaughter.
As an American, looking at a fighting sport, I'm not really intrigued by the professional career of a 126lbs boxing in-fighter who relies on OHKOS against other fighters less than 126lbs. If was fun in the beginning, when he was discovering sport and confidence with his fantasy ability to OHKO everyone and never get hurt...but that fun stopped very quickly.
Jesus that was painful.
The worst part about Ippo being so dragged out is that it honestly feels like the author just writes plotlines on a whim, then decides to drop them without going anywhere, or straight up forgets about them.
Remember Takamura's eye supposedly being fucked?
Remember Itagaki's pseudo-rivalry with Ippo and him acting like a psychopath about it?
Remember when Takamura acted like someone special is gonna put Iga in his place but it was too embarrassing to say (why the fuck would he be thinking of Mashiba)?
I think you just described what this manga is about
>In reality japanese little men get their shit pushed in the heavy classes.
>Hajime no Ippo is about two boxers (Ippo and Takamura) using brute strength to dominate the ligher classes
Yeah, the heaviest in their divisions are beating the lighter fighters in their divisions. Ippo is never allowed to ever fight absolutely anyone heavier than him, by rules and regulation, because he'll just lose. Ippo, the strong tank fighter of infinite stamina and explosive power is never ever ever ever allowed to fight someone 127lbs or more because they're in a heavier (stronger) weight-class than he is.
>He hates current ippo
Proof shonen fans are brainlets
I pity the poor idiots who train there
Well, you can gain body weight to fight in heavier classes. What its dumb about Ippo is that he is constantly training his body to ridiculous lengths and yet his weight is always the same.
He looks like he gains mass and proportion, but if you look closely youcan actually see that that is in fact pure, 100% concentrated oxygen, which is why his weight never increases.
>You are now remembering the "giant" black guys, russians, etc that Ippo fought fairly early in the series.
>You now realize that those were all manlets who couldn't cut it back home.
Apparently Ippo reached peak muscle perfection for his height from Day 1. He's the peak performance of Japanese Featherweight, no one else, just him.
So if he ever DID gain more weight to leave his Featherweight Division title, he'd just be making himself worse AND ALSO fighting people who's peak performance is better than his peak performance.
For as much as Ippo is praised for how strong he is, it's always just comparative. He's strong...compared to other featherweights. Raise the limits, and suddenly he's not so "peak strong" when compared to others that weren't allowed to compare to him.
I get why so many anons are bitter as fuck and and basically giving joke synopsis's, hell I'm fucking bitter as shit
but the beginning of ippo is easily one of the best sports mangas out there and I really recommend reading it. The reason people think the whole thing is shit is cause what happens later retroactively ruins a lot of what was built up and poisons the memory of it, but there were a lot of great and exciting fights in ippo.
>Low Weight Division World Champion fighters
>half the size of Asian female models
>literally the smallest people
How tall is Ippo, again?
Exactly, I'm starting to realize Ippo's just a tiny prick and his "challenges" are failures from higher weight classes.
They produced a champion tho
Morikawa realizing his Oriental arc was irredeemable garbage, giving the readers a proper in Universe reason.
The only thing I find odd in this chart is how low Ricardo is.
Where is Piscina Ricardo at?
so then I don't need to read it since the best parts are already in the anime, except for the comedy parts
To be fair, Takamura would destroy Ricardo and so would the guys who gave Takamura trouble
Should she let Ippo get punched into retardation?
>Japan S. Bantamweight
>118–122 lbs
I mean, I guess? A Japanese gym produced a Japanese fighter who could fight strictly only other Japanese fighters who weighed only 118, 119, 120, 121 or 122 lbs because if they weighed more or less, they were disqualified and the match was cancelled.
How many fighters is that? Japanese Super Bantamweight fighters being backed and marketed in enough fights with other Japanese Super Bantamweight fighters on a regular enough basis they could afford to produce matches? 8 fighters? 18 fighters? 800 fighters?
I guess a gym that's been around for a few decades can produce one fighter for that one class that one year who wins, sure.
But Ricardo has mastered the left, every jab of his is the equivalent of [Throws chancla in Spanish]. It goes beyond the boundaries of the body.
5'5"
>not posting ITS REALLY DEEP as the OP
disappointed
>I'm starting to realize
You didn't notice how Ippo was shorter than everyone but the seaman?
How? Literally every character in the manga has said that Kamogawa is a fucking retard and his style will ruin Ippo
Was the slap posted already?
Oh I thought you hadn't seen the anime either
the only other good fight was the mashiba v sawarma one cause it was fun to see two dirty fighters go at it
Wait so how did ippo's brain damage heal
>trying to think of other actual fights can't think of any. most of ippos fight are good at the climax
this was a sudden epiphany
He never had a professional medical diagnosis confirming he had brain damage and thus we've been pretty sure for months that he was never punch drunk in the first place. The reason he lost was because he went too far down the Kamogawa-hole
Asspull
He still has brain damage. The question is if its as bad as he feared it was.
Oxygen you moron.
Ricardo hasn't even used 10% of his snakes yet. Ricardo Gorgon must be so high on the charts that it can't be contained in one image.
I wonder though, how come Morikawa never draws the ladies holding the round number each time a round starts? They don't do that in Japan or what?
congratulations to him for discovering after so many years of professionalism that you can use tactics and strategies (which makes him already smarter than his coach)
They don't. I don't know how much you know about Japanese culture and history (I'm an expert). But this dates back to the days of the islamic occupation of the 200s. Women were forced to conceal themselves and this passed down the culture to today.
I think Yea Forums is retarded and is going to meme the shit out of it and nothing else. Coach shoulda benched Ippo until he fought properly before he stopped fighting solely Japanese fighters. You can chalk up the rest to "He's still improving, I have to give him time", but he should have fucking ripped the Dempsey out of his head after Shimabukuro and said "How about you start attacking FIRST like I taught you at the start, with explosive punches and aggressive defense?"
I mean its the DEMPSEY Roll. Only real boxers will get the reference in my comment, but explosive punching and aggressive defense describes Mike Tyson to a fucking T, which Ippo is based off of. When he got rid of Kevin Rooney as a trainer, and shacked up with Don King, he ended up throwing away damn near everything Cus D'Amato taught him. All of this high-level defensive skills, head movement, footwork, angles, and his JAB (surprise surprise) away and just tried to be "The Man" through intimidation and hard punches, with King filling his head with bullshit.
The parallels are there as far as the dropping of skills are concerned. All we need now is for him to rape someone, leave jail, and then endorse someone who bashes on his religion and he'll have everything Tyson had.
>when the ring girls look heavier than the actual fighters
Perhaps he's doing for Ippo what he would've liked for Tyson's career? By following Kamogawa Ippo is successful the way Tyson would've been, following this logic, had he not gotten rid of his trainer.
Ricardo has been touted as a super champion that could conquer any weight class if he so desired.
Yeah it must be pretty easy to watch your not cutiepie bf take part in the most destructive form of boxing as a certified nurse, just like let the retard chase his dreams lol.
And yet, Takamura is stronger without a doubt
I'm pretty sure it's physically impossible for him to hit heavyweight, even if we say he's fighting two weight classes down to Featherweight.
Not that he can't build that much, but he'd be far to muscular to properly box.
Look just because someone is incapable of drawing straight lines, forgets how many times he has been downed in a match, can't guage distance, tunnelvisions a single strategy and forgets about being able to jab people with his left hand doesn't mean he has brain damage.
Kamogawa pls go
Also don't forget not even being able to walk straight and slipping over his own feet.
It's all just crazy speculation though, Kumi is just paranoid and Ippo should jump right back into the ring.
That's right the boy still has plenty of oxygen left, all he needs is a good slap on the back to invigorate his Japanese spirit and he will be brand new.
god those memes were the best
When will Takamura just beg for her pussy? She's down to fuck.
Probably cus she has to stay home and treat her retarded brothers boxing wounds all the time, and mashiba's boxing is infinitely safer than Ippo's.
I think anyone that values Ippo being alive and able to tie his own shoes would try to steer him away from boxing, the way I view it people like Miyata or the journalist are indirectly contributing to the boys eventual death at 30.
Ippo should just fuck everyone already
>1200 chapters in
>man this boxing thing might be more complicated than anticipated
It's just all so tiring, you know?
>hey Ippo, I know technically I was the one to cancel our rematch, our rivalry is 1200 chapters old, you promised your mother you'd quit boxing next time you lost and are exhibiting symptoms of braindamaged caused by your reckless style of boxing, but why you quitting man?
>what you don't love me no mo?
I feel bad for Kumi when she finally gets him to marry her while entering her late 30s, lets him impregnate her out of desperation immediately, and then brain damage from a career in boxing causes him to go senile/have dementia before their child even enters middle school.
It was only a temporary power boost, user. Ippo is to weak to mantain this form...
Takamura also only boxes for the coach's approval though.
I liked it.
>He never had a professional medical diagnosis confirming he had brain damage
Which is a total crapshoot anyways, the only way to certifiably diagnose CTE is post-mortem brain dissection. Its symptoms can be attributed to a number of other causes, it's only when the patient has a history of activity that could lead to CTE that it is a considered a potential diagnosis. A librarian who never engages in any sort of sporting activity demonstrating the same symptoms would never be considered to be potentially suffering from CTE.
I sympathize with kumi more than any of the other characters, but this is a boxing manga so she has to be portrayed as crazy
The symptoms Ippo showed can easily be attributed to either in-fight or post-fight injuries though. Also him fucking up the distance and getting hit by punches he thought he dodged was always against southpaws.
Takamura is also shit, every single one of his fights is the same as ippo's
>get punched a lot
>get angry
>???
>win
people comparing him to RJJ pisses me off
also I want ippo to be heemed goddamn stiff
Takamura is even worse. I want to see him get destroyed in heavyweight so badly.
god that'd be based
The problem is George is very VERY formulaic though so Takamura will keep winning and keep being a dick until the end of the manga.
The problem is that George as a gym owner refuses to throw shit at a coach character and will instead paint him as perfect
It's the referee that makes this
Daddy issues and boxing go hand in hand. Look at Mike Tyson.
The distinction I think is that Takamura doesn't consider the coach be an absolute authority and more just uses his boxing to thank the coach for introducing him to this lifestyle, while Ippo completely tunnelvisions the current coach teaching and will bruteforce it until it works or he dies.
>tfw you weight more than takamura.
god damn i knew their body size never matched their actual weight. But I'm floating around 180 lbs and I think I look skinny.
He still worships coach to a degree, getting mad at Ippo for dishonoring and letting him down and thinks coach should just forget Ippo because he has him.
If the words "fighting spirit" or "power of friendship" aren't said at least once in a shonen piece, the author turns to dust.
It's seriously a 4 lbs range? Jesus you could fast or bulk for like 2 weeks and jump up or down a class. There should be people with like a dozen belts between all the different divisions and regions.
There's definitely still a level of worship, but it's not a level of worship that's detrimental to his boxing, Takamura is just a prodigy who does his own shit while being grateful to the coach for getting him out of a life of delinquency. He views him as a fatherly figure but it's not something that as clearly impairs his judgement like it does for Ippo.
Seriously, anyone over 5'7" would need an eating disorder to even fight Ippo.
>but it's not something that as clearly impairs his judgement like it does for Ippo.
Except when it comes to Ippo.
Ippo was clearly struggling during the brain damage scare arc but Takamura being Takamura did nothing to help the person Coach has put so much time and effort into (even if it's bad) because he's a selfish manchild who wants all of coach's attention. His judgement is clearly faulty if the praise of that old fart is worth letting your junior flounder
I meant more like in the ring but sure, outside it Takamura can clearly be a moody fuck trying to be the coaches only child.
Takamura is a 6'1 guy,he isn't that big by western standards
What power level is La Kumi Loca?
Currently untested but potentially capable of killing psychic komogawa
Damn haven't seen this dudes content in a while.
Yup. 17 divisions, each separated by about 4 lbs.
Unless you're "Cruiserweight" in which case you are NOT "Heavyweight" you've just got a pool of fighters with a 25 lbs range (175-200lbs) to fight against.
If you train too much in the gym and gain as much as 5 lbs of mass, you could jump up TWO entire weight divisions! It's like you have no sense of pride or shame!!
>Minimumweight 105lb
What does this kind of boxing match look like?
Like this Weight divisions are fine to add inclusion, sure...but it's mostly to disallow this sort of fight. It's also annoying when there's too many and laughable when the division range is so small.
Side note: women's professional boxing has different (lower) weight limits. They're almost identical to children boxing limits.
>People still posting my edits like a year or two later
Christ
>tune out chapter 1015
>this is going nowhere fast
>tune back in just now
>Ippo is a cuck
lmao
>I'm floating around 180 lbs and I think I look skinny.
But are you buff? There's a difference between lanklet 180 and boxer's 180.
Takamura is usually 200 lbs he cuts a lot of weight for fights.
>leaving his wife a widow and children orphans
I imagine that his wife would die of grief.
Man you can't even fathom how fucked up Sendo is going to get
Has anyone else died other then Ippo's dad and Volg's mom?
Pretty sure Sawamura is fuckin dead
He's hiding the fact he has a detached retina just so he can win the coach more belts.
Nah, he came back during Miyata's match, can't remember how long ago that was though.
He's alive, he's a coach now.
What year is it in the manga?
1989, it's been that for fifteen years.
Takamura's match was November 1999 apparently, so it's probably 2000 at this point.
For some reason I read that as 1899.
>Steampunk Ippo doing bare-knuckle boxing
Fuck, I'd read that.
Ironically it'd be safer.
Ippo vs the mexican is a great fight even if ippo loses
What are you gonna do? Make it so that small people aren't allowed to box?
It could do with less granularity however.
I like fighting a lot, but I'd never do it for a living, it takes a certain kind of violent personality to do that. And daddy issues are often a great inspiration for those feelings.
It would be honestly. Can't punch someone in the head with bare knuckles, right?
Overstayed it's welcome. Ippo had so much potential but ended up becoming yet another flawed battle shounen type story that was milked dry. I guess 2nd place isn't too bad though and it does has some redeeming qualities.
I am like 43 episodes into the anime, looks like the later material is fun.
The first season is perfect, stop there
Times change user. A one eyed Takamura isn't gonna cut it.
manlets shouldn't be allowed to live, let alone box
As long as they hook-up with amazon women everything is fine.
manlet detected
I am 5'9" so you are correct.
>eat a grain of rice
>go up a division
Man, Yea Forums literally knows nothing about sports or weight cutting.
You mean stop after season 2
S2 was good, but i really like the way S1 ended
S2 was OK. Ippo's fights were pretty dull, Date getting fucked was fun I guess, and the only great part was Takamura vs Hawk.
Have sex, Ippo.
>There are 17 boxing weight classes now.
and mexicants are the champions of 11 out of those 17 divisions
miss the old reem lads
Didn't he also win a match with outboxing at one point? And was like really good at it. Kamogawa told him to never do it again.
No, he didn't. Also Kamogawa was mad at Ippo for taking an easy punch and almost losing to some barely ranked shitter, he did fuck up even when he ended up winning with one punch. One of the few instances where you can't blame Kamogawa
In fact Takamura blames Ippo for his losses too, and tells the coach to forget him.
>Remember Takamura's eye supposedly being fucked?
at least this one is constantly brought up, clearly it is there so morikawa can end takamura's storyline quickly if he is forced to end to manga earlier than planned
To show the struggles with potential brain damage that most long time fighters go through I suppose.
Also to break up the monotony of Ippowinslol.
Now that Ippo knows that he can throw punches with BOTH hands will he have enough oxygen to do so?
It actually made me pick the series up again.
lol this dumb ass arc is gonna drag for a couple of months more at a minimum. i
it' the way Morikawa operates and it sucks balls
Just read meguru guys
He has to learn to breath through the mouse for the left hand and through the nose for the right one. Otherwise he won't amount to jack squat.
It hasn't been brought up since the fight after Bison, which was a guy trying to exploit that weakness only for Takamura to oneshot him because apparently, it magically disappeared.
And having to wait 4 months for a chapter?
it hasn't been that long since the fight and the guy got a clean shot in to takamura's possibly blind side, so bringing the eye problem back again wouldnt be an ass pull at least
Considering the recent quality of ippo I'd rather wait 4 months
that's why you read Baki instead of Ippo
would learning hamon solve ippo's oxygen problem?
Hamon uses too much oxygen already.
you forgot having his own animated series
now that i had the time to think about it, ippo doesn't have the mindset to use hamon to his advantage. it'll give him enhanced strength and endurance but if he keeps doing what he always does, it'll ruin his breathing rhythm, cancelling out his hamon altogether.
