Most of these characters only have bad things happen to them superficially so they can ultimately have a cool triumphant moment and add a new girl to their harem. They might be ridiculed by society at large, but they have a small core group of characters that understand just how amazing they are.

Have you felt angry or mad at a main character choosing the wrong heroine compared to the one that you would've chosen? If you have that also means your self inserting. Otherwise why would you care, because for example when watching live actionshit most people don't give a shit which characters get together with who, since you can't self insert.
