Missed all the conversation when this series aired a few months ago, but now that I'm back to watching anime and reading manga again I can't get enough of this series. The 12 episodes weren't enough and I quickly spent the next few days reading all of the manga chapters. It's wonderful, it's heartbreaking, and I can't wait for more of Hina and perfect tsundere girl Rui.

Miyabi is a homewrecker. She knowingly pounced on Natsuo when he was still fucking Rui's ass.
Rui dumping him seemed so out of character. The entire arc starting with Natsuo getting a book to publish assignment (Rui cutting her hand, the HS Club reunion, working constantly when Natsuo was in the hospital, the 1 month date only requirement, being so distant in NY) all felt out of character as they author suddenly slaps this person with Rui's hair together and lets them be so distant to the one she was so devoted to helping. It's not the same Rui who got Natsuo out of his previous writer's block. Characters mature, but this Rui felt like a weird about face all the way too the end of the relationship.
Early acts Rui is tsundere, Later Rui is written that Natsuo broke her out of being a tsundere (somehow) to function like a person who is a bit more adventurous and now a traveling chef learning the land like Umihara Kawase. Nat is suddenly the jealous one of the couple. Rui becomes much more selfish (the opposite of how a tsundere would ever be) towards the one who broke through her tsundere defense.
Special Edition manga releases. Vol 25 includes those 10-12 episodes uncut. Started with Vol 22 for 4500 yen editions with a disc.

Breaking up isn't out of character, it's all the distance she shows and then out of the blue back from NY for 3 days offers him an early v0day present and fuck you I'm gone. Didn't care about the writer's block or anything else he's been going through while trying to support her felt weird. Miyabi giving it to her in the street did set it off, but Rui should have been more concerned about Nat's current feelings and situation he was trying to spare her of rather than just be made that he was hiding something like this not to worry her. Her being worried is how her own hand was cut because she gets careless.
But still, the HS Club reunion trip is what stood out to me that Rui was suddenly different. She has almost no role here other than present and when the shrine of a lasting love is mentioned, there is no tug between the two of them to solidify their commitment once again even as a b-story.
Early Rui is just a shitty kuudere. She is too autistic to be a tsundere.
I'm not even a Ruifag but it's obvious that force kissing a guy in a relationship is the kind of thing Rui would do.

I really didn't like the "My bitter sweet high school romance" part of the manga and when I realized the whole lit-club exists only for Natsuo and Rui to get together in the end I was only reading it to see when and how will Hina come back to the story, only to get disappointed that she becomes the gag character for most of it. Now I just keep reading to know how this will end.

Nope, that's pretty much this manga
I was still enjoying it through 210 or so when the breakup happens. Using the manga as a platform for different (new to Japan) situations got a little tiring at times no matter what. Drug addiction, stalking & when to call the police, gay characters, suicide, loss of a child. Some were better handled than others. The drug one was shit. Stalking was alright, if not a bit forced at times. Suicide was handled well as was loss of a child. The trans/gay background given to characters felt much rougher, but that's as an American who has seen so many countless things on these subjects the last couple of decades.
Well now I'm conflicted.
That last page implies it's not over between them and it's also a major Hina losing flag

Doesn't take that long to catch up. Some of the stuff was much better than the drama with the Lit Club. The Theater stuff was good. Rui/Nat as a couple is very cute. Some good Extras that fill in the missing sex scenes from a few spots.
I'd never use that moment as proof of anything given a writer can always change their mind and call it a dream sequence, possible future, etc. to get past it.

You are missing one thing, on the same chapter 73, guy asks Natsuo to write about how he met his wife, but he already wrote about how he met Hina. But he never wrote on how he met Rui. So Rui is really endgame.
I did notice the official mangas having various misspellings or mistranslations. Trying to translate some of the jokes were rough
