One of the early Romance Dawn oneshots had two types of pirates, "Morganeers", who prey on innocents and pillage and rape and all that shit, and "Peacemains", who prey on Morganeers and just like adventure. It's common among all protagonists throughout media. The protag is usually a little scatterbrained, a lot uninformed, so that other characters can exposit to them the setting and story.

Serious answer: for a writer, it's much easier to make characters struggle against their own stupidity than it is to write an interesting conflict with a proper antagonist.

It's hard to write a smart character.

The memory of KB is automatically transferred after the KB is released. He could've used a mirror which was prepared by somebody else, for example.
