This. They're even the same age, they're both 13. And the inspiration for Luna and her sisters is just as obvious.
It was some shitty exec at Futabasha's decision. The art was changed for the LN's and they were moved from the Monster Bunko to the M Novel label at the same time as the anime announcement.
That said, given how new the manga is (started at the end of 2017) and how long anime are usually in production before we even hear about them it's quite possible they started work with the new designs before the manga even existed.
