how does one into digital art? I tried wacom tablets and the ipad pro, but it‘s awful compared to brush and paper. all the nuances and the ease of mixing colors and just ‚happy accidents‘ are all lost when drawing on a tablet. I feel like shading and coloring take so much more time and work with digital. is there a trick to it or does it just take getting used to it?

As for criticism, there's a few I can spot but none too hard to fix.

Ear appears to be too small, the neck doesn't seem to connect to the back of the head, and the hands are really small. I'd also say that the arms seem to be too long and narrow.

Most of the piece seem to have the light coming from the viewer's left, but certain elements (ribbon on braid, gauntlets) aren't properly shaded.

As for software, use whatever you feel comfortable with. I personally think Gimp is really clunky though, so you might want to try out other software to see if they fit you better. Personally I switched over to Paintstorm after having used Photoshop for about a year.

I don't use a tool, but if you need one, there is this pose application for Android where you can also put a light source on the model, it's called Easy Poser.

Folders are a nice way to clip to a group a layers other correction layers like hue/saturation/luminosity, brightness/contrast, etc.

Curious about this talk of layers. For those that do less layers: do you do this to preserve system resources or because you started with traditional media?
Me, I don't care about layer count and use what I have to use, but I think the most I've used are more than 300 layers, and it was for this pic many years ago.

I started using less layers because I worked too slowly due to using 100 layers, being paranoid about every single brush stroke. Also I realize that I don't usually go back to any of the hundreds of layers I use so they'd mind as well just be on a single layer.

I used to use hundreds of layers primarily because I was too afraid of merging everything into one layer because in my mind I wasn't sure if any of my brush strokes were good. I had to take some notes from Bob Ross and just let those kinds of mistakes happen. Using less layers is more efficient to me, now. It just doesn't make sense to me to use a hundred layers unless each of those 100 layers actually had a purpose or was a completed drawing of its own. Also, studying from traditional media I can see how some artists develop a technique and confidence through a lack of an undo button and only having 1 canvas/layer to work with. It's something that digital media artists who has never touched a piece of paper or physical brush can never learn through digital alone.

Interesting. At one point, I did tried to do everything in just one layer, but didn't like it because I change my mind a lot during the process. That's why I use several layers, so I can just change specific things or a group of layers at the same time with folders.
