There are actually a few different species of cicadas in the US and their sounds are all a bit different.

In Japan, cicadas are symbolic of summer, and possibly symbolize reincarnation as well, based on summer being the time when the cicada comes out to sing, thus think of Higurashi, it plays an important role.

Cicadas have a breeding cycle that means they're nearly absent from most places for a few years before descending like fucking locusts all in one season. Japan has this "thing" with the four seasons. There's even a huge book they're forced to study for school in which a shitton of poams are divided up into the seasons, so it has a huge cultural impact and significance for them. You can even see this live and in-action when you hear your anime characters going "When you think of [Time of year], what do you think of? Of course, you think of [Subject]!"

Cicadas are associated with summer, because the end of summer vacation in Japan ends like, right in the middle or a week after the cicada breeding cycle, so they associate the sound of that bug with the summer, specifically the end of it, and therefore the closing on a lot of childhood things, like summer loves, etc.

NYer here. Cicadas show up en masse every 13-17 years. They spend most of their lives underground until it's time to emerge, grow wings, and mate as much as possible.

You're thinking of mayflies. Cicadas don't have "proper" mouths, but they do have straw like mouths that they use to drink tree sap, similar to a butterfly or a mosquito's proboscis. Depending on the species, cicadas can live for quite a while as adults, even months.

this, one day the area beneath my apple tree had thousands of little cicadas climing out of the ground like grunt enemies from a tower defense game. for the next 5 hours the air was filled with fat flying bugs, screeching and lots of hungry birds. I looked into it later and it turns out they do this about every 17 years
