I also just finished it a few minutes before writing this. The ending was absolutely perfect. I came extremely close to crying (which says a lot since I've never actually shed tears while watching anime). I'm going to let my mind settle for a bit but I think this will end up going down as one of my all time favorites.

I've only been watching this for 2 days shy of 3 months so it's not as long as some of you. But I'm really going to miss having episodes of this show to cheer me up after a shitty day or just any day in general.

I still have the webseries and the one light novel that was translated into english as well as the movie coming out next year. So it's not like I'll have no more of these pretty witches.

Mine would be sharp 40, the piano episode. Really paints Doremi's parents, especially her father, in a mature light when he previously had been shown as a clown pretty much. Also one of the episodes where Doremi acts like a proper big sister to Pop. All in all a fantastic episode.

I like the one where Hana befriends Sachiko, but it's hard to answer which is my favorite.

The piano episode is beautiful. It's so hard to choose a favorite since there are so many great episodes. My favorites from off the top of my head are the last 3 episodes of Naisho, that episode where Doremi and Kotake get stranded in the forest together, Doremi's crush episodes from season 1, and pretty much any episode about Aiko's family situation.

Personally I don't think so. Hazuki's mom was always shown to be impressionable. Even when she rebelled, she was easily swayed back into being complacent. Hazuki on the other hand clearly sees that how her mother acts is unhealthy and is constantly standing her own ground.

What's so special about this kid's show?

It makes you very sad and depressed.

Some of the best character writing I've seen in anime. The entire main cast and a lot of the side characters are extremely fleshed out. The show deals with some heavy themes in a way that is realistic and to the point. And despite being a kids show, it never talks down to its audience. On top of all of this, the show is very fun and energetic.

Ojamajo Doremi is a very slow burn. 200 episodes or so. 4 years of these girl's lives. You watch them grow up and develop into great people. You watch them deal with some very adult problems that the show handles in some exceptional episodes. You watch them build up their community; pretty much every character in their class gets an episode of focus. It feels like a big family, as opposed to most anime where the classroom contains three main characters and the rest are nobodies. You watch the changes in the witch world as Doremi and her gang win them over slowly yet surely.

It's the characters that bring it all home though. They are all (generally) kind and well-meaning people but still act selfishly and have their own character issues they have to deal with. There's no monster of the week type thing or even big fights at all as is typical in most magical shows nowadays like precure. Just community and characters.

Also there's fun expressive animation, nice watercolor backgrounds, and some really good tracks in the ost. Great, great show. The final arc and episode were very tear-jerking but wrapped up the show better than any other show ending I've ever seen.

What do you guys think makes kids' shows have so much potential? Doremi, Cardcaptor, Heidi - all aimed at children, all masterpieces. I think the strongest aspect about kids' shows is that if they're well-written both kids and adults can get something out of them, the latter perhaps even more so ironically enough.

The shows have a sense of innocence to them that's hard to capture without the limitations put on children's media.

Once you get rid of the jaded cynicism that shrouds to different extents basically every show aimed at teens and above what you are left with are earnest tales of good people influencing each other positively and mature into emotionally honest people.
The best things is that in the bests of these shows the adult characters learn just as much as the kids, which in turn make their struggle all that more resonant.

You know, Doremi is almost being unfair. What shows can claim to receive 200+ episodes to take you on a journey and really flesh out the characters? Nowadays everything is one cour pretty much and if you're lucky you get a 2nd season and OVA's approved, but that's already quite fortunate.
I suppose we can be thankful when Doremi was made when it did. You know, back then when it was normal to get multiple cours, not just if your name is "Precure". And Doremi was a passion project anyway, so it really just all came together beautifully

Honestly, I'm just glad people still remember this show after all these years and doing so poorly in the us. Being able to discuss this series with fellow Yea Forumsnons greatly outweighs whatever terrible thing the movie can bring upon us, at least for me.

This show is so fucking good it amazes me.
I was recently rewatching it and one episode I never really considered anything special hit me like a train just because of recent events in my life and brought me almost to the verge of crying.

For me, the best mundane episodes are just as amazing as the serious episodes. Seeing Doremi fall in love with some random boy or exploring the life of one of Doremi's classmates is really fun. Hell, if it weren't for the lighthearted episodes humanizing the characters and letting us see their daily lives, the sad moments would have way less of a punch.

Yep. The baseball airplane episodes from Naisho are among most people's favorites and they're perfectly happy and carefree.

In all honesty, Ojamajo Doremi is a magical girl show for kids. The main appeal is lighthearted, fun witch adventures. When people recommend the series, they're always exaggerating the darker aspects. And while those parts of the show are masterful, they aren't even close to representing what the show is about.

While I could see it taking place during Motto, I don't think it taking place after Dokkaan is out of the question. Perhaps the queen temporarily gives them witch apprentice powers to search for new witch apprentices. I could also see them creating a reason for Majo Rika becoming a witch frog again (although I doubt it will be permanent).

I get what you're saying but the meme chart and that WEG that I've seen still aren't wrong. To whoever made them, what made the story stand out was how it didn't shy away from those things.

To me, what's really happening with the love for Doremi is that there's just 200+ episodes of great writing and a great big cast. There's not just something for everyone, but a lot of good stuff for everyone. I love romcoms and I love episodes about Doremi's awkward failed attemps or Hazuki's really cute story.

Oh of course. I wasn't trying to discredit the serious episodes. Those are still a huge part of the show. I just feel that their presence is exaggerated by certain people.

Also, episodes about Doremi's crushes/Hazuki and Masaru are top tier for me

Literally no heart. You probably skipped episodes or stalled on it long.
Wait until you get to 40. But anyway yes, Doremi is like 90% happy fun times and positive while the little part deals with mature issues. The best thing about those episodes is that they have levity to them too. I'm not sure why discussion revolves around them mostly when lighter eps are some of the best.

Doremi is even cuter when she falls in love, of course these episodes are top tier. The one where they go fishing is one of the best from the first season.

Why not those two? They're good as hell, it seems hard to limit to one. While nearly all eps are great I think the best are Dokkan 40, 49, 51. Naisho 4, 9, 13. Motto 45, 40. Sharp 40, 49.

His are one of the best not just in Doremi but in Toei too, his Nadja episodes are fantastic. Besides Doremi has several strong episode directors on it anyway: Tatsuya Nagamine (Heartcatch Precure), Juunichi Sato (you already know who he is), Takuya Igarashi (Other than Doremi he did Ouran, Nadja and Star Driver), Shigeyatsu Yamauchi (Casshern Sins). The series in general has a strong rotation of staff, it really is an incredible series.

Has anyone ever counted how many times they transformed into different kinds of animals? Was it mostly hamsters? I know there's a few animals that they seem to stick with, maybe for most of one season? I haven't really noticed while I've seen the episodes at random since watching a while back, but it seems like it might be mostly hamsters.

It's usually hamsters. Although they transformed into different kinds of insects quite a bit in season 1.
