Honestly, I got more interested on reworked version of this story than this story. It’s just the characters are too fucking boring, the villains are lame as threats and we don’t care about them at all, and the pacing is laughable. They even forget to have 02 cry when Ichigo calls her a ‘monster’. Like, why did they cut the detail that made this scene so impactful? Why couldn’t Nine Alpha mock 02 for crying over it?
Nothing about this series feels refined or planned out, just rushed as fuck until some stupid Kokoro x Mitsuru bullshit comes up.

I’m happy to get my mitsukoko chapters as they come and then skip the rest until the focus returns to them again. I’m not really interested in the rest, so the wait for the Eden chapter will feel like eternity at this pace. To me, mitsukoko’s story has concluded splendidly in the anime, their moments in the manga is more like special ‘dessert’.

In a revision of this story, I expected 02 to get more consistency and Hiro to be more of a unique and weird character, not this shit where we got Ichigo as a total angel (when making her the one who pushed 02’s mental state could’ve helped to make 02’s breakdown feel more believable while it enhanced the humanity themes as well).

I don't get why people get like these stupid one note characters. I know much of the appeal comes from them interacting and forming relationships but just because these characters are paired up doesn't make these relationships more than the sum of their cliché parts. I believed even the writers knew this too so they had inject so much drama in it and cause all these love triangles because of course every romance story only gets interesting thru drama. The drama even then is such bullshit because the drama is contrived thru miscommunication, which absolutely does not make sense since these characters aside from 02 are a trained from birth super mecha pilot team. Said team designed to kill monsters with coordination and tactics, using mechs specifically designed to be piloted by 2 complimenting people in sync.
Take for example Kokoro & Futoshi, seeming fine at first relationship, but over time slowly deconstructed and as Futoshi's mushy lovey affection is revealed to be actually quite possessive and clingy while Kokoro comes off as so incredibly passive that she accepts this relationship in a Stockholm syndrome-like manner. I will concede this is an interesting concept for the story but the thing is, the relationship problems are never really addressed or focused on. Futoshi was clingy, possessive, and forced Kokoro to accept a promise she didn't want, but no one ever talks about it. Kokoro never even gave him a reason or even talked about why she left him for Mitsuru. these stupid teens are have been a cooperative team since they were little kids yet their own communication skills with each other are questionable to downright terrible.
And what was that concept replaced with? A stock-ass happy couple complete with a stock-ass "we want a baby" plotline that got aborted before it even went anywhere

What’s weird to me is that one of the more stronger bonds in the series is Futoshi and Zorome. They are like perfect buddy characters but the show makes the relationship almost invisible when it can encourage the duality of their Franxxs and have some actual genuine bro love. Heck, they can make a (believable) conflict for Zorome as he compares himself to Futoshi in their performances in Franxx battles. But as I mention, they have refused to push it.
However, they will forcefully make 02 bond with the girls when we have know that it doesn’t make sense for her character even if she apologizes and the girls want to drag her their routine. She’s anti-social, she thinks completely differently from them, and she doesn’t like to follow their activities (recall the stupid bath episode).
As for the drama thing, what if Ichigo actually does try to worsen 02’s image just about she is envious of her being with Hiro, but she tries to justify it by thinking of 02 as a ‘monster’? That can have Hiro ironically refer to her as a ‘monster’ instead. Plus, it’ll be interesting and more logical for the story and themes.

I do agree the comradery between most of the cast is cute and definitely would enjoy more of that or at the very least have some of it explored. The unfortunate truth of the matter is that those moments were fairly rare and at the end of the second half outright shelved in favor of the 02/hiro/ichigo love triangle where even that was pushed aside for the rushed to hell final battle. I remember the overall cast was simply one note but maybe that's because I mostly remember the absurd amounts of focus between hiro & 02, where those characters were tired and done in other shows. I'm stating to wonder why even have other characters there when so many of the episodes centered around 02/hiro and the plot that was barely 2 steps removed from your average evangelion fanfic.

For me, I felt like the Kokoro romance and Hiro drama was the wrong direction for this character. What can make him work is his regret about his reaction to the ‘new’ Hiro and his anger towards children and adults. After that mean meet-up with Hiro and Mitsuru’s bullying, Mitsuru picks up a book that touches on amnesia and reading this book makes him realize what’s sorta going on with Hiro. He tells the kids and adults about it but they all ignore him and say that Hiro is ‘perfect in the way he is now’ and he’s simply falling behind.
So when he does actions like riding with 02, it’s done from selflessness. But the problem is that he barely talks to Hiro due to the self-loathing for his own harsh, childhood actions.

For me, I thought the second half was going to focus on the fairytale, with the identities of couple revealed as Papa and 001. If you look at the human society in that book, it seems similar to medieval times- inspired APE society, from aesthetic, bright golds, whites, and some reds, outfits, and even catholicism. The culture of the beast princess and even some of her physical features (horns and blue blood) are extremely similar to the klaxosapions. The witch also fits in because their purple colorscheme, weird features, strange abilities, and alien appearance lines up perfectly with the Virm, the enemy of Klaxosapien. So in that fairytale, the prince is actually a human shield against the ruler of klaxosapiens. It’s likely the witch wants 001’s ‘wings’ for a purpose we don’t know about, but I say it’s likely the biology technology that made 001 immortal. This in turn will preserve their human shield, Papa.
More evidence for this is actually 02’s dramatic theme song. The lyrics “mom says ‘you are so special’” is definitely not from 02 herself. Because Eo To hasn’t learned any words until she meets Hiro, (after the ‘parent’ is gone). But we know that 001 is the special weapon of her race, more special than everyone of her race. And she’ll likely understand her mother’s words. 02 also says weird stuff in ep13 about having memories that don’t belong to her: m.youtube.com

Well, I can understand it, because of the slow pace and Goro/Ichigo and Mitsuru/Kokoro arcs that took 4 months each (with 1 month break and 9s chapters in between). I think overall the manga has been massive improvement over the slower episodes of the anime, but the pacing must be nightmare for 02fags who only read the manga for her. Yabuki seems to like Ichigo(her ex-wife) more, which doesnt make it easier either

What’s worse is that the characters we focus on are mainly useless and too ridiculous to take seriously. Like Mitsuru outsmarts APE with the stupidest shit ever, moving the Nines to the parasite’s house thing. Ichigo was in a massive explosion and somehow lived. If even these useless noobs get stupid plot armor that embarrasses the plot armor 02 and Hiro have, why do we need to worry about any actual stakes?
In xenoblade games, your party members are usually extremely confident people that join your group during the journey. In this manga, the members are unconfident nobodies, with no interesting traits, barely decent bonds, and survive by dumb love stuff that barely has any of the things that make the Hiro and 02 bond stuff work. 02’s Franxx doesn’t have a dumb secret ‘more perfected’ Franxx form and it’s been established that 02 and Hiro are capable fighters with power that consistency grows as their bond becomes stronger. In this Mitsuru and Kokoro bullshit, they gain a massive power up when they BEGIN to bond and still are shitty Franxx users. Why does Futoshi and Ikuno have better bond development than them when it’s their romantic arc?

I may be a fanfic writer but I really want to have character work with logic, not against it. For example I have 16 and his Franxx. His Franxx is developed after the inspiration of Hiro’s and 02’s piloting and notably looks like horrifying, feathered monster. So it is connected to the clone 001 experiments. In that relationship, 16 hangs around the Franxx storage area just to watch over it, but he doesn’t know if it’s truly alive despite interacting it and providing it with orders. His main conflict is his built-in obsession with usefulness and order, and his love and obsession for the Franxx. Nine Alpha pushes him to follow former mindset just so he can be the soldier APE wants him to be, fulfilling his purpose, and Alpha’s partner, Zita, childishly influences him to follow the latter, just so he can be happy.
Note that 16 is made mostly with the same methods for Hiro, so it’s kinda expected that he will carry some of Hiro’s traits.
Mitsuru is just a bad boy that has the author’s blessings to get things without actually earning it. His conflicts are fucking childish bullshit that never gets mocked or questioned. He never even bothers to question himself about Hiro’s weird behavior or if he’s being too mean. Yet, he only bothers to talk about it during a Klaxosaur battle and bam, he gets the girl plus a Franxx power-up from the author’s ass. He’s just a dumb motherfucker that doesn’t deserve anything, not even his screen time. He’ll be far better if his development and screen time is spent on the background instead, as he is that worthless and engaging as a character. Characters need good conflicts and they have to be interesting enough to pursue those conflicts.

APE is a diverse group composed of seven members, some members have power over one thing but lack other things as well. They will determine some decisions by vote and they can have power over Papa’s decisions with their votes. All APE members own their parasite factions and run them differently, but Papa is limited on only having the most important and powerful parasites (as they all think he is so ridiculously kind and compassionate that he must reserve his father-like care to these parasites in particular). This helps to ensure that they can take care of Papa if they think he’s being corrupt and it makes the sharing of the Nines much easier.
It doesn’t sound so bad until you understand politics.
