I don't really keep up with nuAnime anymore but my impression was that somehow the industry magically got taste and started producing good characters again. We got a surge in popularity of archetypes that were considered "taboo" for kuso anime (romcoms etc) such as Gyaru.
But beyond that we even started having characters that didn't feel like archetypes at all, such as Megumin and Aqua.

Who knows what caused this. I think the only time people started really shitting on tsundere was in the case of Infinite Stratos, to the point it crashed and burned the entire franchise. Maybe that had some sort of influence.

It's not for everyone, it's kind of like preferring cats to dogs because you have to earn the cat's respect and love while a dog just gives it's devotion and loyalty.
