Is there any point in buying anime dvd's/blurays? I wanted to at least own the ones for my favorite series but: >expensive, if not, ugly box covers >alternative artwork/boxes used for American releases (Different from the originals) >takes up space >limited to the physical disc and utter lack of efficiency With torrenting however, I have all the series I want for free, with their highest quality rips, with custom subs/audio, with the ability to use the videos to make pictures or edits, which I can copy/stream/download to anything, almost instantaneously, and all while taking up just hard drive space.
What is really the point to own the physical Funimation releases then? Just to sit on your shelf and look pretty? Emergency backups if you lose your files? I would love to support the creators of an anime, but doesn't most of American sales just go to Funimation?
How does Funimation even stay afloat with this outdated business model?
funimation is a legitimate tumor on the anime voice over industry, do not support them.
Christopher Collins
Import JP releases if youre a collector

I don't watch their dubs, but I've seen some. I hate how they use the same VA's for almost everything. Honestly, wouldn't be a problem if the VA's had range, but they put no effort into sounding different at all. The One Piece dub is fucking awful; Usopp's VA (Sonny Strait) literally just uses the same voice he uses for Krillin in DBZ.
So I should just import? And that really only serves the purpose of collecting and supporting the series?

>How does Funimation even stay afloat with this outdated business model They launder yakuza money. My dad told me.
what the fuck is this creature, he just scared me into never buying anime again
Nicholas Foster
What made you call him a creature?

Only thing that really bugs me is the inclusion of both DVDs and Blurays in the same box. Clutters shit up when I only want BDs. Otherwise, Funimation has ("had"?) low prices that often get even lower from other webstores (ie, Rightstuf). I say "had" because they've started following Aniplex with jewry by releasing shit like Re:Zero and DitF and even fucking shounenshit BnHA in 13-ep chunks ("Part 1" and "Part 2"), each for like $50, when they used to do complete series for like $20. So now they're also doing "Essentials" or something, which is a budget price for year-old releases, for shit that's already thus been out in Japan for two years, and it's just retarded.
That all said, they're finally releasing Tatami Galaxy on BD in USA, so I can't complain

Did you see what he looks like? His apartment? I guess he's happy, but definitely reminds me of the kind of people that get that into anime

I like how these redditors and normies never fail to expose their selves within two sentences
They think there cardboard collector boxes are actually good quality
Robert Moore
they're just like their japanese parent company and think physical should only be for true collectors

Which is the direction physical media is heading anyway. My only real problem with them is when they exclude extras like commentary.

Separating ovas from the tv is a dick move on digital. Inb4 paying for nothing. Also having a dvd release first instead of bd and spltting a seasons in parts can die in a fire.
Nolan Long
Vic Mignogna fans are the bronies of the anime community.
Yeah, I noticed the price hike as well. Luckily, I can get cheaper anime from UK companies.
Daniel Moore
can't you just paypal the studio / author / a 100 dollars and be done with it
Tyler Turner
No. Studios are mostly commissioned to make anime. Say, Good Smile Company is one of the sponsors. Do you want to starve GSC of cash and see less nendos?
Eli Lee
so in order to support the industry and hopefully get s2's of shows, what is the best thing to purchase and from where
Caleb Reed
It's impossible to generalise. Do you have any specific series in mind?
Easton Ross
as an example how about killing bites a bit more relevant would be airing seasonal anime
Nathaniel Anderson
Neither the publisher nor any merch company were on the production committee, so I'd say buy the anime disc release.
