The sense of atmosphere was amazing, it made you feel as if you were there, experiencing everything. The animation was beautiful. The music was great. The mecha designs were interesting.

Too bad the story was shit, but what do you expect from anime? Asians aren't capable of the same depth of thought as western thinkers. They try to mimic it, but it just comes off as laughably sophomoric. Enjoy it as birdsong: pretty and meaningless.
