It's astounding: These post were made well after it had become apparent that the symoblism was inconsistent at best - and yet they get things so very wrong by enforcing an interpretation that's loaded with presumptions. One of them being that "flying" and 02 are actually beneficial in any way to Hiro (or anyone else), wich at that point was already highly dubious. Another one that there was a coherent theme of personal development, when all we got was revolving around rather static characters and plot points and multiple regressions of possible development back to those "core traits".

It's exactly why people were so disappointed with this anime: They made themselves believe that minor things had huge meanings behind them and thus ignored all the early warning signs. It's why you still get people pretending that it only started to go off the deep end somewhere between episodes 15 and 20.

Death is inevitable and imminent for Hiro no matter what he does. Papa doesn't keep sub-standard kids around and he'd already accepted his fate after he failed with Naomi. 02 was a surprise second chance for him and he'd rightly reasoned he had nothing to lose even if she was considered dangerous.
