No. Feel free to deliver to any request that inspires you. There's nothing wrong with you drawing what you want to draw.

For the background on that drama: There's one specific guy in here who relentlessly spams between five and fifteen LWA requests per thread. This has been going on for over half a year and he's resistent to any friendly advice. Naturally, most don't enjoy that kind of behaviour.
On the other side, you have a shitposter who thinks that he needs to attack artists that draw things for people he doesn't like and is quite aggressive about that. That includes not only genuine spammers, but also regular requesters that he desperately tries to label as spammers. It's best to ignore him.

Anyway: If you like something in here, draw it, no matter whose request it might be.

Well the first thing to do is to know why you want to draw.
I have been drawing most of my life so is something I like. Of course I only started digital art some years ago which is why I'm not really a pro.

I would start start with something simple.
A simple pose with a character that doesn't have many details and go from there.

It takes a lot of time to get good so don't expect to be a pro in no time, it just doesn't work that way.

And yea, draw a lot.

For sketching I use SAI, for coloring I use Clip Studio.

People do commission me a lot, but right now I'm working on getting better.
I don't want to stay in the same tier all the time so I'm trying to get better with coloring, details and so on.
Coming to the draw threads is a lot of help since I can pick something that I like and anons always come up with great ideas.
Not to mention all the feedback I can get as well, even if is harsh, I know anons will straight with what they say about my art.

That's more a problem with the tablet I use and I don't usually care much about the lines when sketching since I still have to do the lineart and such.

I heavily refference to the point where it's almost copying

Only reference to see the character details and colors. But positions, anatomy, angles etc I don't copy.

I'm talentless af so I always make a bald model with character's proportions in cg3d or koikatsu first if there still isn't one, force it into a proper pose and then use it as a reference.

I reference for complex poses. I don't straight up copy, it's rare to find a reference that is exactly what you want
Many manga artists do the same, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

I guess each artist has their own quirks.
But I usually just use real life photo subjects.
Then I convert it to the character I'm drawing.
I'm not sure if that's actually okay.
But I'm an amateur and poses don't come to me naturally.

I think there was a site where you paid a price for a photo pack with a bunch of pose references with a real life model. Seemed useful enough.

I'm not implying its a bad thing, its useful for no end of practical design elements and details. I wouldn't be critical of artists like Asano Inio or Kengo Hanazawa who use photos in their work as they're the ones composing those images, its all their vision. I do think it shows a lack of creativity to rely on other photographers compositions. It's one thing to read about or reference how Tudors constructed their buildings and what materials they used, its another thing to get a photo of a street on from google and copy it 1:1.
This will devolve into endless splitting of hairs and semantics as to what referencing is at this rate. I think the starting point should come from the artist, you sketch your ideas first, reference comes after you've explored the concept otherwise you might as well just offer up whatever pinterest throws your way.

That's fair: But references are references, no matter at which level. And, while you can overdo it, there's nothing wrong with using them in the first place, nor is there any point in not calling them "references" just becasue they're minor references.

I don't understand this mentality of downplaying references. They're a vital tool for any artist regardless of the medium. Most art classes teach artists to copy boals of fruit and naked people. Many artists for centeries have been drawing this way, so why is it different for online artists? It's like you people want to handicap yourselves on purpose. I remember my art teacher in high school said to us that you can't draw from your head if you don't know absolutely everything about your subject. Drawing without any references is about as bad as drawing blindfolded. In essence, unless you have photographic memory, you can't draw without references. Jesus Christ, people. Just use your references, please!

The question isn't should you use references, the question is how to use references. I didn't use refs on the left pic because all the poses are so static: I've drawn them before, I know what lines go where, I understand how joints work and foreshortening. All those reasons are why I used refs for the right pic: they are action-y, not static, I've never drawn anything like that in my life. But the next time I draw something like right pic, I won't need a ref because I really absorbed the refs I was using.

So left pic comes from a place of understanding, and the right pic does not. This is the ultimate point of using references. When you're beginning as an artist/drawfriend, chances are you don't understand anything about how the body works. So you Google and copy, maybe even trace. I personally think this is fine, even the tracing, but the key is to not do it mindlessly. You have to be constantly thinking while you do it. You have to really LOOK at why that line dips there or why that line stays straight. DRAW WHAT YOU SEE is the best art advice I ever got. Really, really look at something. Stare at it and think about why it looks that way. And don't be a tool and post it anywhere online, especially if you're tracing. Use that as a reference if you get lost again in the future.

The thing about referencing a pose is that nobody owns it. Nobody invented standing or squatting. There's a million pictures taken of people posing in a million different ways. I'd almost equate it to fair use on YouTube, like what YMS or Demolition D does: you're taking something from a source and adding to it by putting your own spin on it. And if that still psyches you out, then take a picture of yourself making the pose and draw that. I've done it before, it's pretty helpful actually. Especially for hands.

Anyway, the point is I'll be doing next.

tkmiz and ZUN are literally two of my top favorite artists. If the aesthetic appeals to me, that's all I need to like someones art. I used Mobile games as an example because they always have really detailed, technically impressive artwork with really boring character designs.

I remember when she shitted on our drawings by ignoring the collage we made for her.
