The fact I have to go online and research what that ending was about is ridiculous and there's no way the average person understood that ending from a first-time-viewing. You have to have super attention and even then you'd have bits and pieces missing from the story, not to mention the story itself is absolute trash. There is no definitive answer. There's no doubt that most of EoE was going to be part of the show before they run into budgetary constraint and the gas attack issue, but I still feel like the movie ending has become an alternate ending informed by Anno's disillusion with the show's fanbase.
