I was sort of expecting a twist later on where it turns out he'd been marked with a hidden slave seal in the first episode, and she was using that.

You can blame this on the anime. They made naofumi look more like less of a vindictive asshole. In the source the queen convionces naofumi that death would be too light of a punishment for malty and the king and seeing them suffer for the rest of their lifetimes would be better and instead had them publicly stripped of their ranks, royalty and dignity. Also they were publicly humiliated in front of the citizens(including people that got fucked over by those two).
Then naofumi realizes he got played into the queen's hands, though there's also many reasons the queen can't off them.

The novel is from 2012 so it's 7 year old writing.

I'm still disappointed by how little the show did, and how it refused to have any twists or do anything to make things interesting.
When I first watched it, I was hoping for some sort of conspiracy, for the evil princess to actually be capable and effective, and the queen to be more morally ambigious, similar to her daughter if she were on naofumi's side.

But it's like the show adamantly refused to do any of that, the church arc going nowhere, with the final showdown being some no-name pope who we've never even seen before the episode, the princess being totally ineffectual and useless, and naofumi just being a kirito-tier gary stu.

It's honestly one of the most disappointing anime I've seen in the past few years, and having looked over the source material, I don't think it's a problem with the adaptation.
